Ansted Heritage Festival returns
ANSTED, WV (WVNS) – A 20-plus year tradition continues as the Heritage Festival returns to the Town of Ansted!The annual three-day celebration is one of the biggest events each year for the Fayette County town. Fayette County Humane Society extends free adoption event Local vendors, live entertainment, kids activities, and more will be making their way to Ansted for this year's festival. The event is held to recognize the unique and storied history of the Town of Ansted, but also as a way of bringing together the community, according to on-site vendor, Craig Clemons.'People enjoy the atmosphere, getting about and having a good time, letting their hair down after a long workday or the end of the work week,' he said. 'They just like to come out and relax and listen to some music, visit friends and neighbors, make new friends, and see old friends.'Guests at this year's festival can expect everything live chainsaw carving, a bbq-eating competition, and a fireworks show to cap things off. Mandurah museum vollie recognised for decades of service
The City of Mandurah's latest Local Legend is a long-time museum volunteer who has helped preserve the area's history for almost 25 years. Over the years, Jan Baker has been instrumental in celebrating and preserving local history through various roles at Mandurah Museum. Ms Baker was pivotal in establishing the Friends of Mandurah Museum committee in 2005, which promotes local heritage in the community. Your local paper, whenever you want it. She has held several key positions in the group, including editor of the committee's newsletter, and will soon retire from her role as vice-president. Mayor Caroline Knight said Ms Baker had contributed enormously to conserving Mandurah's history through research and documentation, helping to share Mandurah's unique stories in the community. 'A huge thank you to Jan for helping to honour and share Mandurah's history in our community,' Ms Knight said. 'Jan has been an amazing leader for our local heritage, having contributed to many research projects and exhibitions about Mandurah's history.' As part of her work, Ms Baker collected more than 100 oral histories from local pioneering families, including the Suttons, Tuckeys and Coopers, to preserve local stories. Through her ongoing research about Mandurah, she has highlighted the important contributions of female educators, Aboriginal community members and local police officers. Ms Baker was also actively involved in the Mature Adult Learning Association (MALA), promoting lifelong learning, and was a major contributor to the Remembering Them publication on local WWI servicemen. She also organised and took part in many fundraising events and the Heritage Festival mullet barbecue.

Community celebrates Washington County's bicentennial milestone
CHIPLEY, Fla. (WMBB) – Washington County celebrated a milestone on Wednesday, March 12th, the county's bicentennial. Community leaders and residents gathered at the Washington County Agricultural Center for the celebration. From 10 a.m. to noon, they enjoyed live music, learned about the county's rich history, and even took photos in 19th-century attire. Mexico Beach takes steps to protect beach dunes and wildlife County officials unveiled the new bicentennial emblem, which will be hung at the county courthouse this year. Organizers were with the community's reception 'Our community embraces everything in our culture, all of our heritage,' said Washington County Tourist Development Council Director Heather Lopez. 'To have this event today, to have everybody come out and really embrace our bicentennial was just amazing.' This is the first of a number of events this year celebrating the county's 200th birthday.
