Why Kelly Clarkson Says Releasing New Music Independently as the 'Boss' Feels Different

Clarkson released her first independent single, "Where Have You Been," earlier this month Whatever Kelly Clarkson releases next is up to her. In an interview on the May 6 episode of Today, the three-time Grammy winner opened up about putting out new music as an independent artist after sharing her latest single, "Where Have You Been," earlier this month. "It's interesting, I'm going back and forth with just releasing what I want when I want and doing a full album," Clarkson, 43, whose last album, Chemistry, came out in 2023, told host Carson Daly. "Because the next one we're working on doesn't sound like this song, so it's a little more rock and roll." The PEOPLE App is now available in the Apple App Store! How Being 'Wrong' Inspired Her New Song 'Where Have You Been' In the Today interview, the "Miss Independent" singer teased of the upcoming residency, "This is totally different for us, how we're doing it." "You fill out the whole stage, like I've hired more musicians, more singers are coming out, we're literally filling out everything." She added, "There's no tracks at all of any instruments or anything. It's all live. It just feels amazing in the studio, so we wanted to bring that into the setting for everybody, so it's going to be really fun." Read the original article on People

Kelly Clarkson 'Thought' She Found True Love. How Being ‘Wrong' Inspired Her New Song ‘Where Have You Been'

Kelly Clarkson's new song was inspired by romance — but not her own. The 43-year-old Grammy winner recently released her new single "Where Have You Been," and she spoke about its meaning and inspiration in a new video shared to her NBC talk show's YouTube channel on May 3. The song marks Clarkson's first independent release on her newly launched label, High Road Records, and features lyrics about finding love after a period of hardship. "Where have you been? / What took so long? / I thought I'd found you / Found out I was wrong," she sings on the chorus. "I almost gave up / My light was so dim / And now, here you are / Where have you been?" "I was watching Only Murders in the Building. I love Martin Short, and I've always loved him. I believe it's the first time Meryl [Streep] came in that show, but she was on stage, and — oddly enough, not about Meryl," said Clarkson, a longtime fan of Streep's work. "It was about Martin Short's face." She explained, "He came up, and he was just in such awe. It was just a pure moment, and everything on his face when he said those words, he looked at her, and he was just so in awe, and he was like, 'Where have you been?'" Clarkson "kept going back" to the scene. "I was like, 'Oh my God. So much was said.' And I was like, 'That's a song.' You have to be grown to really know what that's like," she said. Streep plays Loretta Durkin on Only Murders in the Building and entered the Hulu series in its third season. Her character is the love interest of Oliver Putnam, portrayed by Short. The American Idol alum, who was married to ex-husband Brandon Blackstock (with whom she shares two kids) from October 2013 through when their divorce was finalized in 2022, then spoke about her own experience in love. I was wrong," said Clarkson. "But now you see it standing in front of you. I was so moved, and so that whole song came out of those words from Martin Short." "Where Have You Been" may be a slower, guitar-laden power ballad, but it's not meant to bring listeners down. "It sounds like a sad song, the vibe of it, but it is really about hope, and it's about finding that thing that you thought you'd never find, and you did," continued Clarkson. "And it's also like, 'Where have you been? I've been waiting a minute. I didn't even know you existed.'" While the "Since U Been Gone" singer may not be in love at the moment, Caraco is in a relationship. "You're in love — one of us is in love," quipped Clarkson. "But he is living in it, and so it's kind of nice to write it with someone and have that juxtaposition." Read the original article on People
