OBC quota deadlock dominates politics in West Bengal; new list an appeasement move, says BJP

The deadlock over the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation continues to dominate politics in West Bengal with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership accusing the State government of 'appeasement politics' on Wednesday, a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that'backwardness'wasthe only benchmark to decide OBC categories. Addressing the State Assembly while tabling the annual report of the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes for the financial year 2024-25,the Chief Minister had said on Tuesday that a commission set up by the government is holding a survey on 50 new subsections for inclusion in the category. The Calcutta High Court in May 2024 had struck down the OBC reservation awarded to 77 categories, highlighting a complete lack of legislative policy within the 2012 scheme to classify any group as OBC. The matter is pending before the Supreme Court. On March 19, 2025, the State government told the Supreme Court that it would complete the fresh OBC survey within three months. Since the fresh list of OBC reservation is not available, the admission to colleges in the State has not started almost a month after results of Higher Secondary Examinations have been declared. The State government on Tuesday also tabled in the Assembly an interim report on the new OBC list for reservations. 'One-sided benefits' Reacting to the developments, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari took to social media and said, 'If this reservation list is not prepared with the intention of providing 'one-sided benefits' exclusively to Muslims, by deliberately depriving Hindus and other communities, then the sun rises in the west.' Meanwhile, State Education Minister Bratya Basu has assured that there will be no disruption in the academic calender due to the OBC reservation list.

With 98.42% of girl candidates passing, they surpassed boys, who achieved a 97.09% pass rate. In absolute terms, more girls passed in first division than boys, suggesting not only improved access to education but also stronger academic outcomes for female students. Among the total passed candidates in the Arts stream, 297,609 were girls and 267,737 were boys. The data also reveals that the gap in performance is more pronounced among regular candidates—98.53% of girls passed compared to 97.27% of boys. Only 46.40% of private Arts candidates passed, in contrast to 97.93% of regular candidates. Specifically, 773 private candidates passed, with 245 securing first division. This stark contrast calls for educational support mechanisms aimed at improving outcomes for private learners. The difference in performance between private and regular students is a concern, indicating potential disparities in access to resources, academic guidance, and structured learning environments. Targeted interventions may be necessary to close this gap. Encouraging trends in Humanities education The overall success in the Arts stream, particularly the large number of first-division achievers, reflects the rising academic standards within Humanities subjects. The results suggest that students are not only enrolling in Arts in greater numbers but are also excelling, especially in government and public schools where Humanities subjects often form the academic core. As the RBSE continues to strengthen its academic framework under the guidance of national education reforms, the encouraging results from the Arts stream affirm the importance of continued investment in Humanities education. Future policies must also ensure that the achievements seen among regular candidates extend to private learners for a more equitable academic ecosystem. Maharashtra Board exams: 124 centres under scanner for cheating in Class 12 exams

It has come to notice that at least 124 examination centres in Maharashtra are under suspicion, having been identified with allegations of malpractice during the Higher Secondary Examinations in the months of February and March. The Maharashtra Class 12 was declared on May 5. The Schooling Department, headed by Master Sharad Gosavi, announced that these centres will be placed under close observation. If sufficient cause is established, their right to carry out future examinations will be withdrawn. Of these centres, the highest number - forty and four - are in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division. The remaining are distributed in Pune (25), Nagpur (19), Latur (11), Amravati (10), Nashik (6), Mumbai (5), Kolhapur (3), and one in Konkan. In all, three hundred threescore and seven cases of fraud were reported, the highest number once again in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Before the exams, authorities had issued statement that every bit of cheating would be greeted with the most severe penalty - the irreversible loss of centre recognition. Such a statement was a part of the Copy Mukt Abhiyaan, a campaign by the new Mahayuti government, which worked towards purging the system of examination of all fraudulent practice. This year, besides the team's appointment for any malpractice, drones were sent to the centres to make certain everyone took the standard path. ABOUT MAHARASHTRA CLASS 12 RESULT 2025 The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has declared the Class 12 board result on May 5, with an impressive 91.86% pass percentage across all streams. Over 15.13 lakh students appeared for the exam held from February 11 to March 11 at 3,373 centres across the state. Konkan division recorded the highest pass percentage at 96.74%, while Latur division was the lowest with 89.46%. The State Board has announced the de-recognition of the aforementioned 124 centres out of a total of 3773.
