Ottawa Bylaw officers help ducklings cross busy highway

Ducklings are seen in an animal carrier. (Ottawa Bylaw/X) Getting across Highway 174 isn't easy for people, let alone baby ducks. Ottawa Bylaw Services says Ottawa police called for help a family of ducks trying to cross the busy highway Monday night. The mother duck and her seven ducklings were near Trim Road. While mom was able to waddle off without incident, the babies needed a bit of help, and Ottawa Bylaw crews gathered them up and dropped them off at Petrie Island. 'We're confident they'll reunite soon,' Ottawa Bylaw said in a post on social media. 'The little ones looked healthy and old enough to thrive on their own if needed,' Ottawa Bylaw added. 'A big thanks to everyone who helped keep them safe!' Drivers are advised not to stop to help animals on busy highways.

G2 driver stopped going 70 km/h over speed limit on Hwy. 174 in Ottawa

Ottawa police say a G2 driver was observed going 150 km/h on Highway 174 last weekend. (Ottawa Police Service/X) The Ottawa Police Service says it hopes mom and dad have a conversation with a G2 driver after they were stopped going 70 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 174. Police say the driver was observed going 150 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the 174 over the weekend. 'Great job by OPS East (Neighbourhood Resource Team) holding a lead-footed Notice G2 driver to account for alcohol consumption and high-risk driving,' police said on X. Police said the driver also registered an 'Alert' on a roadside approved screening device. 'Stunt, suspension and hopefully a 'conversation' with mom and dad,' police said.' The G2 driver is facing a charge of stunt driving, which includes a 30-day licence suspension, and the vehicle impounded for 14 days. Meantime, another driver was observed going 66 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 174 Sunday morning. Police say a driver was clocked going 144 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. 'Residents have had enough with high speeds & disruptive behaviour after the sun goes down,' police said. 'OPS East NRT taking another high-risk driver off the road after midnight this past Sunday morning.' The driver is also facing a charge of stunt driving.
