Someone intentionally placing rocks on highway near Qualicum Beach, RCMP say

Oceanside RCMP believe someone has been intentionally placing rocks on Highway 19 near Qualicum Beach, which has already caused one vehicle to crash and damaged at least two others. Authorities have warned drivers to be cautious in the area as they investigate. The incidents happened in the early morning hours on Saturday and Sunday, between Little Qualicum River Bridge and the Corcan Road underpass. Mounties said the first happened shortly after midnight Saturday, when a northbound vehicle struck a large stack of rocks that had been left in the slow lane. The vehicle went off the right side of the road and crashed into an embankment, though no one was injured. Emergency crews responding to the crash located another pile of rocks stacked in the southbound lanes and remove them. The next incident happened around 2 a.m. Sunday, when three vehicles – two northbound and one southbound – drove into rocks on the highway. 'There was potential for serious harm to have occurred from these reckless acts but thankfully, nobody was injured in any of these incidents,' said Sgt. Shane Worth of the Oceanside RCMP. Mounties have since increased patrols in the area, and there have been no incidents reported since the weekend. Authorities asked anyone with information on who is responsible – or dash-cam video captured in the area around the time of the incidents – to call Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111 and quote file number 2025-4193.
