PNB bowlers shine on national and district greens

Cheryl Waterman Twenty districts, 434 registered clubs and four coveted national titles – this year's BSA Men's National Championships delivered drama, determination and a showcase of remarkable talent. And, for the Port Natal Bowls district, the tournament was nothing short of triumphant, as local clubs brought home two silver medals and a bronze, reinforcing their growing status as a force to be reckoned with on the national stage. Returning home, appropriately proud, is the formidable Westville Bowling Club foursome: Paul White, Dougie Bashford, Arnold Muscat and Roger Boulle. Their tournament journey culminated in a hard-fought silver medal. Adding to the district's glory, Hillcrest's Wayne Roberts, John Peacock, Gavin Abel and George Parker – after facing Westville in the semi-finals – bounced back to clinch the bronze medal by defeating a strong Bryanston team. But the accolades didn't end there. Westville's Arnold Muscat, fresh from the gruelling fours final, competed in the Veteran Singles final, where he secured his second silver medal of the tournament. His dual-medal performance underscored not only his individual excellence, but also the depth of talent nurtured within the PNB district. Back home, the action was no less riveting. Westville CC hosted the PNB Ladies Open and Veteran Singles Championships, where two new champions emerged after a weekend of intense competition. In the Ladies Open Singles, Umhlali Country Club's Odette van Zyl, a newcomer to PNB but no stranger to competitive bowling, reached the final after defeating Stella Park's Kim Christensen. A dual member from Richard's Bay BC, van Zyl has quickly made an impression in her new district. In the other semi-final, Amanzimtoti's Hilary Lindsay led most of the way before Stella Park's Glenda Matthews staged a dramatic comeback to win 21-20. Matthews carried her momentum into the final, finding her stride by the fifth end and drawing level with van Zyl in the ninth. From there, the seven-time champion showed her class, gradually pulling ahead to win 21-17. After missing the 2024 championship due to family commitments, Matthews expressed joy at reclaiming the title, and praised Lindsay and Van Zyl for the tough challenges they posed. The Ladies Veteran Singles also delivered thrilling moments. In the semi-finals, Westville's Gail Jennings narrowly edged out Amanzimtoti's Lesley Levy 21-19, while Hillcrest's Claire Murray triumphed over Hillary's Linda Didlick 21-18. In the final, Jennings raced to a 19-7 lead before Murray staged a spirited comeback, narrowing the gap to 19-14. But Jennings held firm, scoring the final two shots to ecstatic cheers from her home crowd. Jennings commented on how she happy she was with her first gold after silver in 2022 and bronze in 2024. Meanwhile, the future of the sport shone bright at Amanzimtoti, where the Junior Masters Championship saw Westville BC's Jarred Bauristhene secure his third title. He overcame 2024 champion Awongiwe Somtseu in the final after they prevailed in semi-finals against Travis Finestone and Tye Smit. From seasoned veterans to rising stars, the Port Natal district continues to set the bar high – on both national and district turf.

Chaos as weapon-wielding intruders crash school formal after-party in Adelaide

A school formal after-party has descended into chaos after gatecrashers stormed the party armed with machetes in Adelaide's northeast, causing thousands of dollars in damage. Shocking CCTV footage showed the intruders storming the formal after-party about 10pm on Friday in Hillcrest. Party host Jaycon Coller said two cars pulled up outside the property, with several people piling out and demanding to come inside. The intruders then kicked the door in and began searching for someone at the home, leaving chaos and destruction in their wake. Footage showed one of the intruders carrying a baseball bat as he entered the property, with another uninvited person carrying a machete. Mr Coller told 9News that he stipulated there would be 'no fighting' when organising the party, but the message went unheard. 'They've forced their way in by kicking the front door open … coming in with baseball bats and machetes, swinging it at everyone and yelling out a particular name,' he said, adding the intruders caused thousands of dollars in damage. CCTV footage showed a sea of youths rushing out of the property a short time later, and while people a white car tried to flee, a person smashed the car window with a baseball bat. A fight later broke out on the streets, with footage of a girl being dragged by her hair and 'slammed to the floor' uploaded onto social media. Neighbour Janine Donato described the disturbance as 'crazy' and a 'racket', with a wave of high school students fleeing the house. 'This is normally a quiet area,' she said. South Australia Police told NewsWire that officers were called to the property after reports of a disturbance. Mr Coller told police that his house had been broken into and he was 'assaulted and had clothing stolen and personal items stolen'. 'Police believe the persons involved are known to each other,' the spokesman said. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

New Dundee city centre flats remain empty months after work was completed

New flats in Dundee city centre are still sitting empty – months after work was completed. Construction on the 28-flat development on the corner of Seagate and Trades Lane began nearly seven years ago. Last summer, The Courier was given a look inside the new two-bedroom flats, which were all but ready to welcome new tenants. But nearly a year on from that visit, the homes are still unoccupied. That is despite Hillcrest confirming the £3.5 million transformation of the former McLeish Fresh Food factory was completed 'a number of weeks ago'. The housing association says it is waiting on sign-off from the city council before it can let people move in. A Hillcrest spokesperson said: 'The Seagate properties were completed a number of weeks ago. 'However, we are awaiting installation of an additional component to allow sign-off from Dundee City Council's building control. 'As soon as approval is secured, the properties will become available for rent. 'As these apartments are mid-market rent rather than social rent, anyone who fits the criteria is welcome to apply directly. 'We'd encourage anyone interested to check the criteria online and keep an eye on the listings going live, as we anticipate strong demand.' A Dundee City Council spokesperson confirmed discussions are ongoing. They said: 'We are in discussions with the developers regarding final certification of fire safety systems within the building.' The development was originally led by Seagate Ltd on behalf of Hillcrest with Invertay Homes as the contractors. Construction work got under way in December 2018. However, the project faced a series of delays. In 2021, Hillcrest confirmed it had parted ways with Seagate Ltd and re-tendered the contract. Dundee-based George Martin Builders then took over the project. Speaking in July 2024, David Milton, Hillcrest's head of development, said he hoped to be welcoming the first tenants 'very shortly'.
