‘Mangoes made my childhood sweeter'

Mangoes mean sticky fingers and long summer days. Back then, summer arrived with the smell of pickles, mango-splattered afternoons, and fights over the last aanti. CT speaks to four self-confessed mango lovers who recall their childhood memories. Actress Gargee RoyChowdhury's mango memories are dipped in simplicity and whole plate of love. 'Dudh, aam, kola diye makha bhaat was summer on a plate. It is my comfort food. But, the prized possession was always the aanti. We'd fight over who gets to cherish it.' Gargee said: 'No mango dessert now can beat that memory,' adding, 'Today, there are mango souffles and cakes, but nothing replaces the sweet comfort of dudh-aam-bhaat. ' Ekavali Khanna Actress Ekavali Khanna's summers were rooted in the quiet charm of her father's farmhouse in Barasat. 'We'd visit during my school holidays. I remember it having a huge mango orchard. I still remember the joy of watching mangoes being plucked and carefully arranged into huge jhuris. They were sent off to relatives, neighbours, and friends. Sharing mangoes was our way of nurturing bonds. It wasn't grand, but it was a deeply warm sentiment. ' I survived on just Dr Debanjan Chakrabarti, director, British Council, East and Northeast India, grew up in Ghatsila, where mango trees dotted every backyard. 'I was the designated climber among my friends, sometimes in our own garden, often in others. When neighbours complained, my dad's scoldings were inevitable, but part of the thrill,' he said. He added: 'During my upanayan ceremony, the dietary restrictions were made bearable only because of the sweet Himsagar mangoes I consumed. ' For musician Upal Sengupta shared that at his home, a Himsagar tree grew tall against all odds. 'Many said it wouldn't thrive, but it did,' he recalls. But harvesting was a group effort. 'We couldn't climb, so when someone did and tossed us mangoes, we had to catch them. It was serious business for us kids. We never let a single mango fall,' he shared with a grin. Fragrant, Juicy, And Full Of Promise — Himsagar Mango Finds A New Home In Sitamarhi

Last Updated: Due to its sweet fragrance, juicy pulp, and ability to bear fruit consistently every year, Himsagar mango is becoming the first choice for both the market and orchardists Among the various varieties of mango, Himsagar has now established a strong presence in the Sitamarhi district of Bihar. Until recently, this delicious mango variety was largely confined to West Bengal and Odisha. Now, it has emerged as a new hope for farmers in the Mithila region. Due to its sweet fragrance, juicy pulp, and ability to bear fruit consistently every year, this mango is becoming the first choice for both the market and orchardists. In terms of size, only three to four Himsagar mangoes make up one kilogram. Pappu Thakur, a farmer in the Sitamarhi district who has been cultivating mangoes on one and a half acres of land, has planted over two dozen Himsagar mango trees in his orchard. He explains that he initially planted just two trees on a trial basis, but later expanded the number to 30. He has planted 10 more trees this year. Its cultivation is gradually expanding. The farmer shared that the biggest speciality of the Himsagar mango is its ability to bear abundant fruit every year. Unlike other mango varieties that bear fruit only in alternate years, this one produces consistently, making it distinct from others. Growing Demand During the months of May and June, this mango variety is readily available in wholesale markets and retail stalls. Its fragrance is so distinctive that customers can recognise it from a distance. Local vendors report that buyers often come specifically asking for Himsagar, and despite its higher price compared to other varieties, it sells out quickly. Farmers interested in cultivating this variety can contact or visit Pappu Thakur for guidance. A specific climate is required for the successful cultivation of Himsagar mangoes. A hot and humid environment, along with loamy soil, is considered ideal. Pappu Thakur says that the best time for plantation is at the onset of the monsoon. A spacing of 10 by 10 metres is maintained to allow sufficient room for each plant. With the use of organic manure, neem cake, and regular irrigation, these plants begin bearing fruit within 3 to 5 years. The Himsagar mango contains no fibre; its pulp is exceptionally soft and juicy. The taste is so unique that anyone who tries it once finds it unforgettable. First Published: May 19, 2025, 17:22 IST
