Congress ‘deceives' OBCs, treats them only as vote bank, says BJP
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday (June 16, 2025) accused the Congress of 'always deceiving' the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and treating them only as a 'vote bank', stating that the decision to conduct a fresh caste survey in Karnataka was driven by the motive of 'electoral engineering'. At a press conference, Union Minister and BJP leader Bhupender Yadav sought to fix responsibility for the expenditure of about ₹165 crore on the first caste survey, which was initiated in 2015 and its report submitted in 2024. He alleged that there were several issues with that report, which was not made public, and communal appeasement had also been done. Mr. Yadav disputed the process being adopted for the resurvey, saying that the 90-day timeline was 'unrealistic'. Citing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's remarks that the decision was not his government's but that of the Congress leadership, he questioned the party's 'interference' in the State government's functioning and said it was akin to the National Advisory Council's role during the UPA regime. Alleging that the Congress always deceived the OBCs, the Union Minister said after the Kaka Kalelkar Commission's report, which was 'suppressed', the subsequent Congress governments did not constitute any other commission. The Mandal Commission was formed under the Janata Party rule. After the Supreme Court upheld the legality of Mandal Commission, the Congress did the work of weakening it, he alleged. 'Even now, there is no change in the Congress's approach,' he said, alleging that the party's objective was 'electoral engineering' instead of 'social justice'. 'In India, OBC reservation is neutral. Then how there are Hindu OBC and Muslim OBC in Telangana? This shows that they do the politics of divide and rule,' he said. He said under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government, the National Commission for Backward Classes got constitutional status. 'We thank the Prime Minister from the bottom of our hearts that the long-pending issues, such as reservations in university posts and admissions in Central schools, as well as constitutional status to the commission for OBCs, were addressed. Because of him, owing to the economic welfare schemes, crores of people came out of poverty,' he said, adding that reservation was also given to the economically weaker sections. On the day, the Union Government issued a notification for conducting India's 16th Census in 2027, which will include caste enumeration, Mr. Yadav said the decision was taken after considering all the aspects and making full preparations for the same. Responding to a query about the fresh list of OBC communities notified by the West Bengal government, he accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of indulging in appeasement politics. On the Opposition's demand for increasing the 50% cap on reservation, he said the BJP believed in 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas (All together, development for all)' and its government would implement reservation as per the Constitution.

98.52% secure Plus One allotment in main phase
The third and last allotment in the main phase for Plus One higher secondary single-window admission has been published by the General Education department. As many as 3,12,908 students have got allotment in the three allotments so far. In the third allotment alone, 87,928 students got fresh allotments, while 57,572 secured higher option. The percentage of allotment was 98.52%. The maximum number of fresh allotments was in Malappuram at 20,342, followed by Kozhikode with 9,804 allotments, Kannur with 8,364, and Thrissur with 6,969. Malappuram also had the most number of students securing higher option— 13,223. Kozhikode followed with 7,007 students getting higher option, and Kannur with 6,594. As many as 4,688 seats remain vacant after the third allotment. In Malappuram, only 95 seats were vacant. The highest number of vacant seats was in Pathanamthitta — 890. Kannur had the second highest vacant seats at 657, and Kasaragod with 644. The number of vacant seats in the general category is 3,770, while it is 196 in the Ezhava/Thiyya category, 196 seats in the Muslim category, 24 in the Latin Catholic category, 19 in Christian OBC, and 63 in Hindu OBC category. A total of 229 Scheduled Caste seats, 67 Scheduled Tribe seats, and 81 in the economically weaker sections (EWS) category are also vacant. The vacant seats will be considered for supplementary allotment. Sports quota As many as 2,889 sports quota seats remain vacant and 359 model residential school quota seats. Admission Admission as per the third allotment will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday and continue till 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Sports quota and model residential school admissions will also be held during this period. Since no higher options will be viable going forward, all students who have got allotment should remit the fee and take permanent admission. Those who got allotment but failed to take admission will not be considered for the supplementary allotment. Students who were unable to apply for admission till now can submit fresh applications for supplementary allotment. Those who had given wrong details during the main allotment phase or had not exercised their options and were thus not considered for allotment can also apply for supplementary allotment or renew their applications. Those who had applied in the main phase but did not get allotment can renew their applications to be considered for vacant seats for supplementary allotments. Vacancies and notification for the upcoming allotments will be published after the main admission phase concludes. Plus One classes are scheduled to begin on June 18.

Plus One admission: 21,887 students get allotment in second phase
The General Education department on Monday published the second allotment in the main phase for Plus One higher secondary single-window admission. As many as 21,887 students got allotment in this phase. Along with the new allotments, 20,511 students also secured higher option. In all, 2,43,155 of the 4,63,686 applicants got allotment. This left 75,419 seats vacant for 2,20,531 applicants. Most in Malappuram The maximum number of new allotments was in Malappuram —2,977. Palakkad followed with 2,535, and Kollam with 2,074. The least number of new allotments was in Wayanad — 667. Idukki had 887 new allotments. Of the 75,419 vacant seats after this phase of allotment, Malappuram had the highest — 17,970. Kannur was next with 8,408 vacant seats, and Kozhikode with 8,122. In Malappuram where 82,498 students had applied for Plus One admission, only 39,663 received allotment. There were 57,633 seats in the district. This meant that there were 17,970 seats left for the 42,835 students yet to get allotment in the district. Of the total 3,18,574 merit quota seats, allotment has been made to 2,43,155 so far. The highest was in Malappuram — 39,663. Kozhikode followed with 23,326, Palakkad with 22,162, Thiruvananthapuram with 22,013, and Thrissur with 21,268. Sixty-seven seats remain vacant in the general category after the latest allotment round, while 413 are left in the Ezhava category, 340 in the Muslim category, and 3,955 in the Latin Catholic/Anglo-Indian category. The number of Christian OBC seats vacant is 1,069; Hindu OBC 1,184; Scheduled Caste 16,934; Scheduled Tribe 27,807; differently abled 3,879; and economically weaker sections 11,889. There were 334 vacant seats in model residential schools. Admission as per the second allotment will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and end at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Candidates who get allotment in the first option in the merit quota should remit fee and take permanent admission. Those who get lower options can take permanent or temporary admission. Those who do not take admission despite getting allotment will not be considered in further allotments.
