Hines-Allen confident in Jaguars' defensive turnaround

JACKSONVILLE, FL. (WSAV) — Joshua Hines-Allen was a strong presence at the second week of organized team activities (OTA) for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hines-Allen's attendance at OTAs came as a surprise, the veteran usually opts out of the mandatory training sessions to train in Arizona. Last season, the Jaguars signed Hines-Allen to a monster 5-year contract worth over $140 million. In 2023, the linebacker had a breakout season. Hines-Allen had 17.5 sacks, which was tied for second most in the National Football League. 2024 saw some regression however, finishing the year with 8 total sacks. Nonetheless, he said he believes Jacksonville's defense can be a major asset this season. 'It's all about the work we put in every day,' he said. 'The communication that we have in the red zone, backed up situations, it all starts out here.' The Jaguars are set to take on the Carolina Panthers in week one of the NFL season on Sunday, Sep. 7 at 1:00 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Jacksonville Jaguars' DE Josh Hines-Allen on changes made after 2024 season

Jacksonville Jaguars' DE Josh Hines-Allen on changes made after 2024 season Following Monday's OTA practice, Jaguars' DE Josh Hines-Allen discussed some of the changes made after the 2024 season. Along with implementing a new defensive scheme, another change for Jacksonville Jaguars' defensive end Josh Hines-Allen this season is that he will be playing at a lighter weight. Following Monday's practice, Hines-Allen didn't get into specifics about what his current weight is, but the 285 pounds he played at in 2024 was too big. "I was 285," Hines-Allen said of his playing weight last season. "I was much bigger. My mindset was always to be as dominant but it was, obviously, holding a little bit more weight puts a little more wear and tear on the body. "It was a lot. Too much. Again, learned to adapt, have know what works best for you, something I tried, and something I'm like, alright, probably don't want to do that again. So we're working on maintaining a good goal for me this year and put some good tape out there." It's not only Hines-Allen who has dropped weight this offseason, but several other Jaguars' defenders have as well, after that side of the ball put on weight last season under former defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. 'Just kind of getting some of those guys back to their natural playing weight. Just kind of where they've maybe been in years past of having success and kind of getting back to that is really what it came down to," Liam Coen said this week, via Jaguars on SI. Last season, Hines-Allen was still among the NFL's more productive defensive ends. His 63 quarterback pressures were the 10th-most in football among his position group, and he ranked 16th in PFF's pass rush win rate as well. But compared to his 2023 season, Hines-Allen's production took a big dip last season. By PFF's metrics, Hines-Allen totaled 90 pressures and 19 sacks in 2023, ranking in the top five in both categories. Allen would play 821 snaps last season and make 16 starts. However, throughout the year, his body felt more "banged up," and while he doesn't know if that was directly attributed to his playing weight, it is something he took into consideration as he planned out this offseason. "I was also getting banged up a lot more," Hines-Allen added. "My body was not cooperating as much as I wanted it to. But I take care of my body to the utmost, but it was a little bit different. I don't know if that had something to do with the weight, so that's something I took into consideration coming into this year." Feeling good and now in a defensive scheme under Anthony Campanile, where as Maason Smith described, the defensive front can play "a lot more free," Hines-Allen is chasing big goals in 2025. "To break the sack record," said Hines-Allen when asked what his goals were. "Be an All-Pro and win Defensive Player of the Year."

Dissecting Jacksonville Jaguars' Josh Hines-Allen

It was almost exactly one year ago that the Jacksonville Jaguars handed Josh Hines-Allen, what was at the time, the largest contract in franchise history. It was soon passed up by Trevor Lawrence's extension, however, Hines-Allen's $150 million contract stacked him up against the very best at the position. This past season, some believed Hines-Allen underperformed as the fifth-highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL, collecting just eight sacks after his record-breaking 17.5 sack season the year prior. That begs the question: Will the Jaguars come to regret the Hines-Allen deal? Advertisement The simple answer? No. Hines-Allen cemented himself among the upper echelon of NFL pass-rushers in his previously discussed 2023 season. Hines-Allen's 17.5 sacks set the franchise record for single-season sacks, cruising past Calais Campbell's previously held 14.5 sacks. When you look at pressure totals, a much better metric, Hines-Allen has been among the best for quite some time. From 2022 to 2024, Hines-Allen collected 75, 96, and 67 pressures, respectively, ranking sixth, second, and ninth in those seasons. It's important to note that Hines-Allen was seventh before missing the Jaguars' season finale. Advertisement Hines-Allen's 238 pressures since 2022 rank fifth among all defenders. Only Micah Parsons (262), Danielle Hunter (248), Myles Garrett (241), and Trey Hendrickson (240) have had more. Sacks are much more of a defensive team statistic than many would like to believe. With an improved defensive interior, Hines-Allen's sack total could return to 2023 form. Another fascinating point to consider when discussing Hines-Allen is his 95% snap count against opposing left tackles the last two seasons. When Hines-Allen is on the field, he's set to face off against the best the opponent has to offer. Advertisement Hines-Allen enters the 2025 season just two sacks shy of the Jaguars at a mere 27 years of age. His best football is still yet ahead of him. If the Jaguars can add to the gruesome twosome of Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, every opposing offensive line should be on red alert this season.
