EU insists that complete ceasefire by Russia is necessary for negotiations to begin

The European Union continues to insist that any peace talks can only begin after Russia unconditionally agrees to cease fire. Source: European Commission spokeswoman Anitta Hipper on 12 May at a briefing in Brussels, as reported by European Pravda Details: Hipper said that Russia must cease fire before peace talks can begin. "Our position is clear that we support the proposal of an unconditional 30-day ceasefire starting today. Also, President Zelenskyy has accepted the proposal without preconditions, also reaffirming Ukraine's repeated willingness to agree to a ceasefire. So now Russia must respond just as clearly, and a ceasefire is urgently needed for the peace talks to take place," Hipper said. She added that "in order to go into any peace talks, we should have a clear, unconditional ceasefire". Hipper stressed that the European Union "needs to continue to put pressure on Russia" because as Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Police, said, "they are playing games and you cannot trust Putin". Background: As reported, the German government said that if a ceasefire is not established in Ukraine by the end of Monday, Berlin, together with its European partners, will begin the process of preparing new sanctions against Russia. On Saturday 10 May, Germany, France, the UK and Poland called on Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire starting on Monday. Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin did not respond to the proposal for a 30-day pause in hostilities, but said he was ready for direct talks with Kyiv in Istanbul on Thursday 15 May. European Commission reacts to North Korean troops' deployment in war against Ukraine, calls it "desperation call from Russia"

European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper has stated that the deployment of North Korean troops in the war against Ukraine demonstrates that Russia is not interested in peace and is a sign of its desperation, as it has been isolated and weakened by EU sanctions. Source: Hipper at a briefing on 28 April, as reported by European Pravda Quote: "When it comes to the cooperation with Russia and Russia's deepening military cooperation with North Korea, this sends a very clear message. Russia is not interested in peace. On the contrary, Russia's goal remains to suppress Ukraine, and Russia is desperately seeking any help they can get to help with this illegal aggression, including from actors which are severely disturbing and disrupting the global peace and security. So it is a desperation call from Russia to rely on such actors." Details: Hipper said that this only confirms how "isolated" Russia is and "how much we are weakening them, including with the sanctions, so hence the desperation". "So this is why we are continuing to do even more to continue to work on the 17th sanction package and to support Ukraine," Hipper added. Background: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un confirmed the deployment of troops to Russia to fight against Ukraine, stating that this complies with the provisions of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between North Korea and Russia. Later, Russian ruler Vladimir Putin confirmed the involvement of North Korean troops on Russia's side in the war against Ukraine and "thanked" them. Meanwhile, Western media reported that US President Donald Trump's administration had supposedly already begun behind-the-scenes preparations to attempt to resume dialogue with North Korea. EU confirms discussions on possible deployment of 'military advisors' to Ukraine

The European Union is considering sending "military advisors" to Ukraine to organize training for the Ukrainian military, European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper said on April 16 at a press briefing in Brussels. Hipper's statement comes after Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said EU member states discussed the initiative during the EU Foreign Ministers Council meeting in Luxembourg on April 14. "Indeed, this was discussed," Hipper said. "But the main point is here to support Ukraine and strengthen Ukraine as much as possible." "The discussions are ongoing as regards the adaptation to the mission, but there is nothing further I can share at this moment," she added. Hipper refused to specify if the plan included sending military advisors during the war or after it ended. Following the April 14 meeting, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also mentioned discussions on a possible training mission. "We have the mission of training Ukrainian soldiers, over 73,000 soldiers have already been trained. So today (April 14), we also discussed what more we can do when it comes to the missions," Kallas said. "Should we expand the mandate of the missions to contribute to the security guarantees of the coalition of the willing?" she added. Kallas did not provide any further details. The coalition is a group of countries that have pledged peacekeeping troops and other security guarantees for Ukraine in a potential ceasefire. At least 37 countries, including European, Asian, and Commonwealth nations, have been involved in the coalition's discussions, with 15 reportedly ready to contribute their troops. Other members have been asked to provide other forms of support, including intelligence, arms, or naval support. U.S. President Donald Trump has yet to offer any clear security guarantees to Ukraine and the coalition as Washington moves toward a reduced military presence on the continent. EU discusses sending military advisers to Ukraine

The European Union is discussing the possible deployment of military advisers to Ukraine to organise the training of Ukrainian troops. Source: European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper during a briefing in Brussels on 16 April, as reported by European Pravda Details: Hipper confirmed that the issue of sending military personnel from EU member states was discussed on 14 April during the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg. Quote: "Indeed, this was discussed, but the main point is here to support Ukraine and strengthen Ukraine as much as possible, and also the discussions are ongoing as regards the adaptation to the mission, but there's nothing further I can share at this moment." Details: Hipper refused to answer whether the deployment of an EU training mission to Ukraine is planned only after a ceasefire in the Russo-Ukrainian war is established or whether it is possible during ongoing hostilities. Background: Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that the European Union is considering deploying military advisers to Ukraine to assist in the training of Ukrainian troops. Earlier reports indicated that the UK is considering deploying troops to Ukraine with the primary goal of assisting in the training and rebuilding of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to deter future Russian offensives. In addition, the coalition of the willing led by France and the UK stated that it was working on a plan to send a mission to Ukraine to ensure a future ceasefire. European Commission responds to Slovak PM's claim over 9 May parade in Moscow

Slovakia committed itself in 2022 to rejecting invitations to any political events held in Russia under a Council of the EU decision and must abide by this commitment. Source: European Pravda, citing European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper during a briefing on 16 April in Brussels Details: Hipper made the comment in response to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's statement that "no one can tell me" whether or not to travel to Moscow. Hipper stressed that in 2022 EU member states agreed to reject all Russian invitations to events such as the 9 May parade, and Slovakia had accepted that obligation. Quote: "For the context, Russia is using the commemoration of the end of the Second World War to justify its war of aggression against Ukraine. So this is the context. And from our side, it is important not to lend legitimacy to this by participating in such events like this parade. And actually, we have also council decision on this member states, including Slovakia. They have agreed in 2022 to decline such invitations." More details: In response to a follow-up question about the possible visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to Moscow, another Commission spokesperson, Guillaume Mercier, responsible for enlargement, replied: "What I can say is that Serbia has applied and is negotiating its membership to the EU, and Serbia's decision implies that the country aligns with the EU, including in terms of foreign policy. So the EU wants Serbia to be a reliable European partner for common principles, values, security, and prosperity, and we need Serbia to reassure us of this strategic position." Background: Fico also rejected the call by Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for European leaders not to visit Moscow on the occasion of the so-called 9 May Victory Parade. [Victory Day is a Russian holiday commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, celebrated on 9 May – ed.]. The Slovak prime minister reiterated that he would be found in Moscow on 9 May. On 14 April, Kallas called on European leaders not to attend the military celebrations in Moscow on 9 May and instead show solidarity with Ukraine. The European Union has also issued clear guidance to candidate countries not to visit Russia or attend the parade in Moscow on 9 May. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!
