Tokyo police host workshop on crime prevention, safety for foreign students
TOKYO -- To help prevent foreign students in Japan from becoming involved in trouble or crimes, Nogata Police Station in the capital's Nakano Ward recently held a workshop, and around 40 Nepalese students from the area participated.
The workshop included raising awareness about "dark gigs" in response to the growing number of cases in which foreigners are hired to carry out crimes. Police officers showed actual social media posts recruiting perpetrators and explained that handing over credit cards or bank accounts they created to crime groups is also a criminal offense. They warned, "Dark part-time jobs offer high pay but have unclear job descriptions, so do not apply for them."
The May 31 workshop also covered traffic rules and ways to prepare for earthquakes and fires. An interpreter from the Metropolitan Police Department's education division who speaks Nepali was also present.
A 20-year-old vocational school student living in Tokyo's Nakano Ward, who arrived from Nepal this spring, stated, "I want to use what I've learned to avoid getting involved in crime." Nogata Police Station chief Hiroshi Maeda emphasized, "There are differences in lifestyles and laws, but I hope they live safely without becoming involved in any incidents."
