#SHOWBIZ: Ryoko Hirosue diagnosed with bipolar disorder

TOKYO: Weeks after allegedly assaulting a nurse, Japanese actress Ryoko Hirosue has announced that she will be suspending all entertainment activities to focus on her health issues. An official site for the 44-year-old star posted a notice on May 2 explaining that Hirosue has been receiving treatment at a hospital in Tokyo after she was released from police custody on April 16. She was arrested on April 8 for allegedly attacking a nurse at a hospital where she was taken to following a car accident. The notice, put up by Hirosue's agency R.H., said that she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental health condition characterised by extreme mood swings, and hyperthyroidism, a condition that can lead to unintended weight loss and heart palpitations. "We deeply regret how both Hirosue herself and the people around her dismissed her illness and suffering as simply poor health. Hirosue will now take a break from all entertainment activities and focus on recovering her mental and physical health for the time being," the agency said. It added that the disclosure of Hirosue's illness was not to escape accountability for her legal troubles. The agency also said: "We will continue to sincerely cooperate with the police in all their investigations." Hirosue's suspension comes after a string of bad press for the star, who rose to fame in the 1990s with TV series such as Beach Boys (1997) and I Love My Dad More Than Anything In The World (1998). She has also starred in films like the Oscar-winning Departures (2008). Aside from the alleged assault, Hirosue was exposed in June 2023 by Japanese tabloids for an extramarital affair with Japanese chef Shusaku Toba, 46. She announced her divorce from her husband, Japanese artist Jun Izutsu, 51, a month later. Hirosue and Izutsu have a son, 14, and a daughter, nine. She also has a 21-year-old son from her first marriage to Japanese designer Takahiro Okazawa, 49. The scandal caused her then-agency Flamme, which had represented her for 25 years, to suspend her activities indefinitely. They parted ways in February 2024 and she set up her own agency R.H.

Actress Ryoko Hirosue being treated for bipolar disorder and hyperthyroidism

Ryoko Hirosue walks on the red carpet at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2022. Actress Ryoko Hirosue will take a break from showbiz after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and hyperthyroidism, her agency said Friday. Her agency said on its website that Hirosue, 35, has been hospitalized at a medical institution in Tokyo since being released by police on April 16 after her arrest on April 7 on suspicion of assaulting a nurse at a hospital following a traffic accident. The agency commented: "We deeply regret that we dismissed her illness and suffering with words like 'poor health.' For the time being, Hirosue will take a break from all showbiz activities and focus on recovering mentally and physically.' In the accident on April 7, Hirosue rear-ended a truck on the Shin-Tomei Expressway while driving with a male passenger who suffered a fracture. The truck driver was uninjured. Hirosue sustained minor injuries and was brought to the hospital in Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture. There, she allegedly kicked a female nurse multiple times and scratched her arm after the nurse sought to prevent her from wandering around. According to a statement posted earlier on her website, the incident with the nurse occurred after the accident "left her in a panic." Hirosue reached a settlement with the nurse. No alcohol or illicit drugs were detected in Hirosue's system after tests by police. Actor Ryoko Hirosue released from custody after alleged kicking incident

Japanese actor Ryoko Hirosue, who had been taken into police custody on suspicion of injuring a medical worker, has been released, her agency announced on Wednesday. 'We sincerely and deeply apologize to the victims of this incident — we will face the concerns and burdens we have caused to all parties involved and will faithfully fulfill our responsibilities,' read the statement issued by her agency, R.H. 'Ryoko Hirosue herself is very sorry and deeply regrets the inconvenience and confusion she has caused to the victims and many others.' On April 8, the 44-year-old actor was arrested for allegedly kicking and scratching a medical staff member while in a 'panicked state' after being brought to a hospital following a car accident on a highway in Shizuoka Prefecture. According to media reports, Hirosue is in talks with the victim to reach a settlement, and the police will continue the investigation on a voluntary basis going forth. A medical investigation found that Hirosue was not under the influence of alcohol or any drugs at the time of the incident. Her agency stated no drugs were found during a police raid of her home and that she has never taken any drugs in the past. However, given that she exhibited symptoms of mental instability, her agency said she would be consulting with doctors and receiving appropriate medical treatment moving forward. For the time being, Hirosue has canceled all of her upcoming activities and will decide her next steps after thoroughly assessing her health. The former idol made her debut in junior high school and continued to have a successful career starring in popular shows and movies — including Academy Award-winning Japanese film "Departures" — as well as releasing multiple hit songs like 'Maji de Koisuru 5 byōmae," loosely translated to 'Five seconds away from seriously falling in love.' Hirosue was involved in an extramarital affair scandal in 2023, which led to her divorce and indefinite suspension from her former agency. After that, she went independent and set up her own agency.
