2026 at the latest — Bayern believes it will get Wirtz (Sport Bild via @iMiaSanMia_GER) It does not sound as if Bayern Munich has any doubt about where Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz will end up: Bayern's management is absolutely certain: Florian Wirtz will arrive this summer or by 2026 at the latest. This was promised to the club. The family's trip to England was taken in stride. Hoeneß even confirmed the trip and classified it as fact. Bayern Munich does appear to be in the driver's seat, especially with Manchester City exiting the race. Oddly, City might have been a more serious competitor than Liverpool given the vast wealth within the club's coffers and also because of Pep Guardiola. No offense to Arne Slot, but he does not hold the same cache as Pep Guardiola. Advertisement Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg added more information on where things stand between Wirtz and Liverpool: ♂️ UPDATE | Florian #Wirtz remains Liverpool's absolute dream target for the number 10 role. #LFC are maintaining contact with the Wirtz family and Wirtz himself — as are FC Bayern. As of Wednesday afternoon, no official offers have been received by Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Stay or go? Internally, Wirtz still hasn't informed Leverkusen of his decision. That's exactly what everyone involved is currently waiting for. It is not impossible for Liverpool to win the Wirtz Sweepstakes, but it will not be easy. Rarely have we seen Bayern Munich this determined to get a player in recent years. Félix wants to go back to Benfica (CaughtOffside via Is there a more disappointing player than João Félix in Europe? It would be hard to find one. Mintzlaff addresses Gomez rumor (Sky Sport via @iMiaSanMia) RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has heard the rumors linking Red Bull Soccer technical director Mario Gomez to Bayern Munich and does not put much weight into them. 'I personally, and we as a club, have an excellent relationship with FC Bayern. But Mario Gomez feels very comfortable with us and has just extended his contract. FC Bayern just signed Max Eberl. I'm quite certain that Mario Gomez will not move to FC Bayern,' said Mintzlaff. Advertisement Speaking to Sport1, Max Eberl also commented on the Gomez rumor. 'When I first read the links I thought it was about a Harry Kane back-up [laughs] but then I realized it was about me. Of course it's not nice, but I'm doing my job with everything I can and make decisions I and the club are convinced of. I can't influence what's being said and written on the outside,' Eberl stated. Mazraoui says Moose was best teammate (Manchester United via @iMiaSanMia) Manchester United's Noussair Mazraoui named his best teammate — Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala. (ESPN) Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain could be vying for Marcus Rashford this summer: Aston Villa could face competition from Paris Saint-Germain to sign Marcus Rashford from Manchester United this summer, The Sun reports. While Villa have a permanent transfer option built into the winger's loan agreement, his high salary could be prohibitive. Bavarian Podcast Works — Flagship Show: Season 7, Episode 43 (Bavarian Football Works) Bayern Munich's season is over, but the real work might just be beginning. This is a crucial offseason for the Bavarians and the coaching staff and front office will be hard at work to try and maneuver the roster in a way that will set up the squad for the 2025/26 campaign. Rummenigge recalls feeling of relief in 2013 (Abendzeitung's Maximilian Koch via @iMiaSanMia) Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge can recall the relief he felt when the team won the Champions League in 2013. 'In 2013, the wound from 2012 healed for me personally, because we won the treble for the first time in Bayern's history. Our team, including Thomas Müller, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Manuel Neuer, Ribéry and Robben, was united; they deserved it. But the journey to Wembley Stadium was terrible. We were on the road for an hour and a half; there was crazy traffic in London. Uli and I didn't say a word. We were so stressed because although we won the league, that game would decide who had the power in Germany: us or Dortmund,' said Rummenigge. New defense for Real? (ESPN) Per Diario AS, Real Madrid is lining up a new defense: Real Madrid will have a 'new defence' for the Club World Cup. New signings Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Álvaro Carreras are all expected to be in place for the tournament, and could go straight into the starting XI under new coach Xabi Alonso. Advertisement Part of the reason for the push for something new per Marca is there are doubts over some of the existing core group on the backline: There are doubts over the long-term futures of Éder Militão, Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba at Real Madrid. Militao is coming back from a second ACL tear, Rudiger has played through pain all season, and Alaba — who has a year left on his contract — has also been slow to return from his own ACL injury. Sebastian Hoeneß extends contract at VfB Stuttgart until 2028
VfB Stuttgart have announced that head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has extended his contract at the club, as his future has been a hot topic in recent weeks. Hoeneß has signed a one-year extension at the MHP Arena and takes his new contract up until 2028. The head coach had only extended his contract until 2027 last year. On extending his contract, Hoeneß said: 'I am very pleased about the contract extension because I am convinced that we can still achieve a lot together. When I came to VfB almost two years ago, the sporting situation was challenging with us sitting in 18th place in the table. Nevertheless, the move to VfB felt like the right thing to do back then. And it feels just as right to extend the contract now. The collaboration with the management team around Alex Wehrle, Fabian Wohlgemuth and Christian Gentner was very trusting from the start, and together we took a successful path after the relegation play-offs that led us all the way to the Champions League. We want and must continue to give our all at all levels within the club to achieve lasting success. This also includes developing and strengthening our team. We want to be able to permanently claim to be represented in international competition with VfB. Now it is time to pool our resources for the final stretch of the season in the Bundesliga. And of course, we're all looking forward to the semi-finals of the DFB Cup and are eager to take the final step to Berlin.' Under Hoeneß, Stuttgart have avoided relegation, finished second in the Bundesliga and participated in the Champions League. His second season in charge has not been as easy with Stuttgart currently sitting in 10th, but the Swabians are in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals and have a real chance of their first piece of silverware in 18 years and a first DFB Pokal triumph since 1996/97. Several clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and even Borussia Dortmund had been linked with Hoeneß as their future managers due to a release clause in his contract. According to kicker, the new contract removes the release clause. Stuttgart had been linked to many head coaches when it came to replacing Hoeneß, but now that he has decided to stay in Bad Cannstatt, they can focus on cementing themselves, once again, as one of the top teams in Germany after several years of struggling. Stuttgart celebrate Jeff Chabot's inaugural Bundesliga goal: 'Solid as a rock!'
Hanau-native Julian Chabot's path to top flight football in his native country proved an unconventional one. It was only after several years playing outside of Germany that the Stuttgart defender came to the Bundesliga in a very roundabout way. On Saturday, the 26-year-old finally scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund. Chabot's immaculate finish off the corner proved the match-winner. VfB trainer Sebastian Hoeneß had to reserve special praise for Chabot during his post-match press conference. Interestingly, the manner in which Hoeneß described Chabot 'Ein Fels in Brandung' is a core part of one of the anthems of one of Chabot's former academy sides, Nürnberg. 'It was a great day for him to score his first Bundesliga goal,' Hoeneß said. 'He defended outstandingly. Solid as a rock. I'm very happy for him. He's a great guy. 'It almost seemed uncomfortable for him to draw praise from everyone,' Hoeneß continued. 'Top-notch performance from him. Looking forward to more.' Chabot began his professional footballing journey in the academy of the club closest to his hometown, Darmstadt. After some time, he moved up to the academy of larger Hessian side Eintracht Frankfurt. Unable to gain significant traction either there, at Nürnberg or RB Leipzig, Chabot eventually moved to Sparta Rotterdam on a free to earn a chance to play. After two seasons in Holland and three in Italy's Serie A, only the deepest German footballing connoisseurs took much notice when Sampdoria loaned Chabot out to Köln during the January 2022 transfer window. At the time, the cathedral city side were in desperate need of central defenders following the January departures of Jorge Meré and Rafael Czichos. Chabot, along with Luca Kilian, were brought in for negligible loan fees. Chabot barely even featured under Geißböcke trainer Steffen Baumgart during the second half of the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign, making just two starts over the course of 13 league fixtures. It thus came as something of a surprise to see Köln sign Chabot permanently for €2.5m after the season concluded. The centre-back did do a little better in his first full season with Effzeh, garnering two assists in 21 league appearances. It would be the 2023/24 campaign that really shifted matters. Chabot got off to an excellent start to the season as one of Baumgart's most reliable bedrocks in defence. Showing prowess as a late-match striker, he suddenly became a hot commodity on the transfer market again. Many Bundesliga sides vied to sign him. Bundesliga runners-up Stuttgart eventually won the race to sign Chabot away from the relegated Domstädter. Strong performances this year once again leave the now €12m-valued defender linked with a move to the Serie A. He nevertheless remains immensely important to his current Bundesliga side, particularly following the departure of his defensive partner Anthony Rouault during the just completed transfer window. Just how important, Chabot proved on Saturday. GGFN | Peter Weis

Hoeneß declares February the 'month of decision' for Bayern
With January now in the past, and the transfer window slammed shut, Bayern now face a defining stretch. Having missed out on direct qualification for the Champions League round of 16, the Bavarians must first navigate a playoff against Celtic. Making the challenge tougher, a high-stakes Bundesliga clash against title rivals Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena looms large. 'No question, February will be the month of decision,' Hoeneß told However, the 73-year-old remains confident in his beloved club's position. "I have the feeling that we are now more stable, at least in the league. Talking about the treble all the time is nonsense. The most important title is the German championship. Hoeneß was keen to emphasise that winning the Bundesliga remains the top priority for Bayern, drawing upon notable comparisons to Borussia Dortmund's current struggles. "No one at Dortmund is talking about advancing in the Champions League, because their league results simply haven't been good enough,' he said. 'They are 22 points behind Bayern. The Bundesliga title is the ultimate benchmark. If we win the league, we have achieved our main goal.' Hoeneß also went on to acknowledge the fact that Bayer Leverkusen have emerged as a serious contender, despite Bayern currently sitting at the top of the standings. 'I have always firmly believed that we will win the title, however, it is now clear that Leverkusen will likely remain our biggest competitor until the very end. They are an excellent team.' The title aspirations of both Bayern and Leverkusen will be put to the test on the 15th of February when they clash at the BayArena in a pivotal top-of-the-table showdown. 'If we go into that match with a six-point lead and a strong goal difference, we'll be in a good position,' Hoeneß said. The clash itself is sandwiched between Bayern's European commitments, with the first leg against Celtic taking place on the 12th of February, and the return leg on the 18th. Despite the packed schedule, Hoeneß remains defiant in his approach. 'I am not going to Leverkusen to lose. But even if we do, with a six-point cushion, we would still be in a strong position.' As Bayern enter a decisive phase of the campaign, the club's ability to handle pressure will be tested under the guidance of manager Vincent Kompany. With Bayer Leverkusen carrying the aim of well and truly heating the title race up, alongside Bayern's hopes of domestic and continental success, February could indeed be the month that defines their campaign.
