Adam Hollier launches another bid for Congress, challenging Michigan Rep. Shri Thanedar
Former Michigan state Sen. Adam Hollier announced he will have another go at running for Congress to unseat U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar. Hollier ran against Thanedar in 2024 but was unsuccessful after election officials determined that he had not submitted enough signatures. Michigan's 13th Congressional District covers a portion of Wayne County, including Detroit. The city, which is nearly 80% Black, had maintained some Black representation in Congress for almost 70 years until 2023 when Thanedar was elected. "From housing to daycare to the rising costs of everything from groceries to the brakes on our cars, we're in a real crisis in this country," Hollier said in a statement. "We need bold solutions and leaders who won't back down in the face of this challenge. The last thing we need are more millionaires and billionaires like Elon Musk and Shri Thanedar who are only in it for themselves." In April 2024, Hollier submitted more than 1,500 signatures to meet the ballot requirement of 1,000. However, Thanedar challenged the validity of the signatures , and Wayne County election staff found that close to half of the signatures were invalid. During his campaign, Hollier received endorsements from multiple high-profile Democratic leaders, including Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and the Congressional Black Caucus. Hollier previously served in the Michigan Senate from 2018 to 2022 before he was selected as director of the state's Veterans Affairs Agency.

Hollier slams Thanedar while announcing plans for a rematch in the 13th Congressional District
Former State Sen. Adam Hollier (D-Detroit) | Ken Coleman photo Former State Sen. Adam Hollier (D-Detroit) announced on Monday that he would once again seek to represent the state's 13th congressional district, throwing down the gauntlet against U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Detroit). In his announcement, Hollier sharply criticized Thanedar, who is serving his second term in Congress. 'From housing to daycare to the rising costs of everything from groceries to the brakes on our cars, we're in a real crisis in this country,' said Hollier. 'We need bold solutions and leaders who won't back down in the face of this challenge. The last thing we need are more millionaires and billionaires like Elon Musk and Shri Thanedar who are only in it for themselves.' Thanedar, who spent $10 million of his own funds seeking the governor's seat in 2018, served one term in the Michigan Legislature from 2021 through the end of 2022. He was elected to Congress for the first time that year, winning reelection in 2024. Hollier served in the state Senate from 2018 through the end of 2022. He served as the Director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency from January to October of 2023. Hollier is also a team chief and paratrooper in the 412th Civil Affairs Battalion, Army Reserve. The two previously squared off in the 2022 Democratic primary, with Thanedar receiving 28.3% of the vote and Hollier receiving 23.5% of the vote. While Hollier sought to unseat Thanedar in 2024, he was disqualified from the primary after Thandedar challenged his petitions to appear on the ballot. In her review, Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett found only 863 of the 1,553 signatures he submitted were valid, leaving Hollier 137 signatures short of the 1,000 needed to qualify for the ballot. After he was disqualified from the ballot, Hollier said the circulator he'd brought on to collect signatures had let him down, but that as the leadership of the campaign fell to him, he must hold himself to a higher standard. In announcing his candidacy for 2026, Hollier amplified criticism of Thanedar, pointing to an investigation from the Detroit News which found Thanedar had spent $930,000 in taxpayer funds in 2024 TV, radio, billboards and other advertisements to promote himself as he faced challengers from several other Democrats heading into the primary election last year. 'It's absurd. While everyday Michiganders are struggling, Shri Thanedar is spending hundreds of thousands of their hard-earned tax dollars putting up self-portraits of himself all over the district,' Hollier said in a statement. 'That's something only Donald Trump would be proud of.' Thanedar told the News the ads were unrelated to his reelection campaign and were intended to generate calls from constituents who need help from the federal government. On Monday, Thanedar defended his record in a statement to the Michigan Advance. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX 'Since my election, we've solved over 2800 constituent cases, recovered nearly $3 million for constituents, gotten $30 million approved in community projects, and sponsored and cosponsored 810 different bills. We have world class constituent communication, including a record 11 in-person town halls,' Thanedar said before blasting Hollier for his previous failure to qualify for the ballot. 'Congressional candidates have the simple task of getting 1,000 qualified signatures to get on the ballot. Voters in the 13th District, 30% of whom are at or below poverty, have serious problems they need addressed. They are looking for someone competent and qualified, not someone who will hire his friends and disastrously fail to accomplish simple tasks,' Thanedar said. In his announcement, Hollier called for aggressive action from the federal and state government to build new affordable housing across the region and crack down on corporations gouging buyers and renters on housing costs. He also pledged to fight for investments to lower the costs of childcare and a repeal of President Donald Trump's tariff policies. If elected, Hollier also promised he would work to make it easier for Michiganders to start small businesses and cut taxes on the poor and the middle class. As one of the two U.S. representatives whose districts encompass Detroit, the race for the 13th District is considered vital for representation of the predominantly Black city. Detroit elected its first Black U.S. representative, Charles Diggs Jr., in 1954, and consistently elected a Black representative up until 2022, when voters elected Thanedar, who immigrated from India, alongside Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit), who is Palestinian American, to Michigan's 12th Congressional District. While Hollier, who is Black, did not make the ballot in 2024, Thanedar's Democratic challengers included Lawyer Shakira Lynn Hawkins and Detroit City Council Member Mary Waters who are both African American. Republican Martell Bivings, who faced off against Thanedar in 2022 and 2024, is also Black.

Adam Hollier running for Congress, challenging Shri Thanedar for Detroit seat
The Brief Adam Hollier announced a bid for Congress on Monday, challenging Rep. Shri Thanedar for the 13th Congressional District It's not the first time the two have run for the same seat and could be the beginning of another crowded primary in the Detroit-centric district Hollier's previous bid for Congress ended after he was disqualified for not submitting enough valid signatures during the 2024 election (FOX 2) - Adam Hollier is running for Congress, the former Michigan state senator announced on Monday. This will be Hollier's third campaign for Michigan's 13th Congressional District, where he hopes to challenge U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar. What they're saying Hollier didn't mince words in his official campaign announcement, taking aim at both Elon Musk and Thanedar in his pitch Monday morning. He called the rising cost of housing, groceries, childcare, and more as the "real crisis in this country." "We need bold solutions and leaders who won't back down in the face of this challenge. The last thing we need are more millionaires and billionaires like Elon Musk and Shri Thanedar who are only in it for themselves," he said. Hollier also took a shot at Thanedar over reporting that he had spent nearly a million dollars in taxpayer funds on advertising during last year's election cycle. "It's absurd. While everyday Michiganders are struggling, Shri Thanedar is spending hundreds of thousands of their hard-earned tax dollars putting up self-portraits of himself all over the district," Hollier said in a statement. "That's something only Donald Trump would be proud of." The backstory Hollier was considered one of the front-runners for the 13th Congressional seat during the 2024 election after coming up short in a crowded primary field two years earlier. But a review of the required signatures a candidate must submit to run for Congress found hundreds to be fraudulent, derailing his second bid for the office. The Wayne County Clerk reviewed 1,553 signatures submitted by Hollier's campaign, ruling that only 863 were valid. A candidate must submit at least a thousand valid signatures in order to qualify. The signatures were originally challenged by Thanedar's campaign. Dig deeper Hollier often cites his military background and his Detroit roots during campaign events. In 2023, he was appointed as Michigan's veterans affairs director. Prior to that, he was elected to the Michigan State Senate in 2018. The Source Previous reporting and Adam Hollier campaign

Adam Hollier to challenge Rep. Shri Thanedar for 3rd time
Former state Sen. Adam Hollier of Detroit said Monday he will make another attempt at defeating U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar in next year's Democratic primary. Last year, Hollier — running a second time against Thaendar, D-Detroit, in the predominantly Democrat 13th Congressional District — stumbled badly after putting together a string of endorsements, including those from Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson; former U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence, D-Southfield; and Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, only to be knocked off the primary ballot for failing to file enough valid petition signatures. Thanedar, an Indian immigrant and millionaire businessman, easily beat Detroit City Council member Mary Waters and went on to retain the seat. In 2022, in what was then a recently redrawn district, Thanedar, then a state representative, won out in a nine-person primary, with Hollier coming in second, 28%-23.5%. Hollier, who served for a time as director of Michigan's Veterans Affairs Agency under Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, issued a statement on Monday saying, "From housing to daycare to the rising costs of everything from groceries to the brakes on our cars, we're in a real crisis in this country. We need bold solutions and leaders who won't back down in the face of this challenge. The last thing we need are more millionaires and billionaires like Elon Musk and Shri Thanedar who are only in it for themselves.' While both Musk, who is the head of Tesla and a key adviser to Republican President Donald Trump, and Thanedar are both wealthy, Thanedar has been consistently critical of Trump's agenda on using tariffs widely and his and Musk's efforts to eradicate or defund parts of the federal government, including the Department of Education. He has also been a reliable Democratic vote in the U.S. House. Thanedar has been the target of claims, at least prior to his last election, that his office was not adequately focused on policy issues or constituent services, accusations he strongly denied. The Detroit News also reported on Thanedar's use of his office budget to pay for hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of media, advertising and billboards last year. Thanedar has said the spending was intended to better serve constituents and was reviewed by the relevant committee that signs off on office spending. Thanedar was also criticized for appearing to change his position on what he had called in the state Legislature Israel's "apartheid" regime, only to criticize other Democratic groups that he felt did not forcefully enough denounce Hamas' attack on Israel in October 2023, which led to Israel's assault on Gaza in reprisal. The American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, a key supporter of Israeli policies in the U.S., backed Hollier in the 2022 election. Hollier, who was born and raised in Detroit accused Thanedar of spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars "putting up self-portraits of himself all over the district,' a reference to Thanedar's billboards. Hollier said he wants to focus on building more affordable housing in metro Detroit, lower the costs of childcare, fight tariffs and reduce taxes on the poor and middle class. 'Here in Detroit, when we get knocked down, we get right back up," he said in a prepared statement. "We keep fighting." Contact Todd Spangler: tspangler@ Follow him on X @tsspangler.
