Eliyass aiming to turn a 20-length defeat into Doomben Cup success
How to turn a last-start 20-length defeat into a Group 1 triumph? It will be hard, but potentially not quite as hard as you might think. Eliyass, the French-bred import that Gai Waterhouse last year declared was her most talented stayer since 2013 Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente, was beaten so far in the Hollindale Stakes he would have needed binoculars to see the winner Antino. READ: 'No two-horse race': Gollan insists chances aplenty in Doomben Cup But when a post-race veterinary examination revealed that Eliyass was coughing, stewards ordered an endoscopic examination. Nothing significant was found and, after a track gallop at Doomben on Tuesday, co-trainer Adrian Bott gave him the all clear to take his place in Saturday's Group 1 Doomben Cup. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Bott has seen big form reversals due to track conditions before and said the Hollindale was a total forget run, with Eliyass not enjoying the heavy conditions and kickback on the day. 'I think in situations where you get those kind of conditions like we saw on the Gold Coast, you do have to be very forgiving,' Bott said. 'He was getting a lot of kickback, racing in among the pack, stuff was coming back at him. 'It wasn't an ideal spot for him to be in, we will just put what happened first-up down to the track. 'I have seen big form reversals before and all we can go on is what the horse has been showing us since. 'He worked well on Tuesday morning and all is in order. 'It is probably not ideal in that it would be better for the horse to have taken some confidence from his last run. 'But the horse hasn't taken any harm from the run.' READ: TAB's strategic move throws early markets into a frenzy Eliyass went on a terrific winning run when he kicked off racing Down Under last year before he tired at the end of his spring campaign and did not fire in his last two runs, including in the Group 1 Champions Stakes at Flemington in November. He has drawn the widest barrier (13) in the Doomben Cup and jockey Tim Clark will have a pivotal decision to make after the gates open. Bott expects him to be in the first few as Pride Of Jenni scoots away with her freewheeling style. 'Eliyass is a horse who can generally be ridden handy to the speed anyway,' Bott said. 'Potentially, he could be one of the closest to Pride Of Jenni in the run. 'We are drawn out wide, we are going to have to be making a decision there. 'We will probably be trying to put him in the race. 'We are expecting them to run along and be strung out, that may help offset the draw as well.'

Tony Gollan insists Doomben Cup not a two-horse race between Antino and Pride Of Jenni
There will be beers flowing freely if either Antino or Pride Of Jenni wins the Group 1 Doomben Cup, but champion Queensland trainer Tony Gollan warns 'it's certainly not a two-horse race.' The Brisbane Racing Club's promotion of a free amber ale for any adult on track if either of the two favourites scores the Doomben Cup is a great promotional tool, but Antino's trainer Gollan said it would be no surprise if there was a party pooper. While Blake Shinn 's daring ride on Antino to win the Hollindale Stakes was exceptional, Gollan said the nature of the Gold Coast track that day meant there were plenty of valid excuses among the beaten brigade. Doomben Cup contenders such as Eliyass and Buckaroo were beaten out of sight on the Heavy 9 track that day and other Doomben Cup hopefuls such as last year's winner Bois D'Argent and Fawkner Park also didn't love the sodden track. Pride Of Jenni and Antino may be the top pegs in Doomben Cup betting, but Gollan said there are many chances in one of the better Doomben Cups he can remember in his time training in Brisbane. 'There is some media around the promotion with the free beers and that's all great for the carnival,' Gollan said. 'But this is certainly not a two-horse race. 'We are well aware there are many chances and it's probably as strong a Doomben Cup as we have seen for some time. 'It is a hell of a deep Doomben Cup. 'I don't think I have seen a Doomben Cup for some time with so many chances in it and it will be such a good betting race. 'I think a lot of people will discard the Hollindale form, to a degree, due to the way the track was that day with the kickback. 'You can make excuses for beaten horses there for sure.' Antino had a spin around Doomben at 6am on Tuesday with his regular track work rider, former jockey Baylee Nothdurft, in the saddle. It wasn't an overtaxing gallop with Gollan mindful it was a big effort to win the Hollindale and now he just needs to tick him over before Saturday. Pride Of Jenni was due to arrive on a flight to Queensland on Tuesday night and Gollan is glad the Ciaron Maher -trained freakish talent is in the race. Given the different track conditions – with little rain forecast in Brisbane this week – and Pride Of Jenni's frontrunning style, Gollan said it will be a very different race to the Hollindale. 'How much you want to take out of that Gold Coast meeting will be up to each person individually,' Gollan said. 'I think it's going to be a hell of a race, we know what Pride Of Jenni's style of racing is. 'There are plenty coming out of the Hollindale that you can make excuses for. 'There were contributing factors down there as to why some horses didn't run to their best, with the surface that day and the kickback.' Gollan said Antino, last year's Group 1 Toorak Handicap champion, is the best horse he has trained. Asked specifically why he holds Antino in such high esteem, Gollan said it was because 'of his ability to sustain a gallop for longer than any horse I've ever trained'. Pride Of Jenni drew barrier one for her Doomben Cup assignment while Antino drew barrier 11 of 13. Drawing out wide isn't too much of a worry for Antino, given he is sometimes slow away and a wider draw can be preferable to an inside draw. He started from barrier 10 of 13 when Shinn took off from back in the field to win the Hollindale. The Doomben Cup has produced double-figure winners the last three years with Bois D'Argent ($26) getting the chocolates last year and the previous two years Huetor saluted at $10 and $26.

Blake Shinn and Tony Gollan will continue their highly successful partnership in the Doomben Cup
The dream team of Blake Shinn and Tony Gollan will continue their highly successful partnership after the champion jockey opted to serve his 10-day riding suspension this week. It means the 37-year-old Shinn will be free to ride Queensland star Antino in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) but he will miss out on jumping aboard last-start William Reid winner Schwarz for Saturday's $1.5m Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m). Shinn was suspended for careless riding on the Gollan-trained mare Torabella in Saturday's Listed Silk Stocking on the Gold Coast. Later that day on a heavy track, Shinn produced a pearl of a ride on Antino to blitz his rivals in the $500,000 Group 2 Hollindale Stakes over 1800m, winning by 3.5 lengths from Fawkner Park and Kovalica. It was a similar stunning effort to last spring when Shinn's daring tactics on Antino paid off handsomely as he came from last to demolish the field by 6.5 lengths in the $1m Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield. Shinn's first race on Queensland's star horse was in October 2023 when he won the Group 3 Sandown Stakes over 1500m. The star jockey has only once finished out of the placings on Antino from eight rides and that was in the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin last December when the gelding was badly checked in the straight before crossing the post in 11th spot. 'They get along with each other and they trust each other,' Gollan told Radio TAB on Sunday of the Shinn-Antino combination. 'Blake really knows what this horse can deliver when he asks certain things of him and his Toorak ride will be remembered long after I'm finished in racing. 'The Hollindale Stakes will be pretty similar I'd suggest, it was a hell of a win. 'They're a great combination. We've missed out on Blake a couple of times through suspension … so I'm really grateful that he took the suspension straight away so he can ride him in the Doomben Cup.' Rosemont Stud co-owner Anthony Mithen said it was disappointing that Shinn chose to serve his suspension this week rather than on Doomben Cup week, ruling him out of the Doomben 10,000 ride on the John O'Shea and Tom Charlton-trained Schwarz. The Doomben 10,000 will be Schwarz's final race before he is retired to stud. 'It's disappointing he chose to ride on the following weekend but to be fair, I'm not sure his last ride on the horse he really got on that well with him anyway,' Mithen said. 'We will find a more-than-suitable replacement and let the horse do the business. 'He could not be going better so we are delighted with where he is at.' Shinn won the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) on Schwarz at The Valley in January but finished last out of 10 runners on the stallion in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 8. Jamie Mott rode Schwarz to victory in his last-start, the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley on March 22.

Blake Shinn to miss either Doomben 10,000 or Doomben Cup after copping suspension at Hollindale Stakes meeting
Star jockey Blake Shinn will miss a Group 1 Queensland winter carnival ride after being suspended for careless riding on the Gold Coast. Shinn will either miss next Saturday's Group 1 Doomben 10,000, where he has been booked to ride Schwarz, or the following Saturday's Group 1 Doomben Cup where he was to ride Hollindale Stakes hero Antino. The champion hoop was suspended for 10 days for careless riding on Torabella in the Listed Silk Stocking on Saturday. After being suspended, Shinn told chief steward Josh Adams he was undecided whether to defer his penalty and wanted extra time to confer with his manager. If he chooses to take the penalty immediately, Shinn would miss riding Group 1 William Reid Stakes champion Schwarz in the 10,000. Schwarz is the $4.50 second pick in betting. If Shinn chooses to defer the suspension, he will miss the ride on Antino who is the $4 second pick in the Doomben Cup after the jockey produced a freakish ride to win the Hollindale Stakes. Shinn was in the sights of stewards again for his ride on Amplify in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet. However, he received a severe reprimand after telling stewards the riding conditions were 'atrocious' and there was poor visibility. Adams said in normal circumstances, Shinn would have been facing a charge from stewards. But he agreed the terrible visibility and riding conditions played a part. The races were called off after the Bracelet.
