I tried a battered jam sandwich - how can something that sounds so grim taste so good
My first thought when asked to try a battered jam sandwich was, that surely can't work.
However, now having eaten one, I think it is fair to say I have never been so wrong in my life.
I should have probably known better because as far as I am concerned anything produced by Holly Tree Chippy, in Pinewood, Blackburn, is a definite winner.
The takeaway went viral 18 months ago when a YouTuber was blown away by its version of the iconic John Bull, and is frequently ranked by customers as one of the best chippies in the borough.
Upon ordering, I was asked, 'Have you had one of these before', with the server clearly aware my southern accent would not have had many of the magnificent culinary experiences that East Lancashire has to offer just yet.

With the smell of chip fat beginning to fill my nostrils, I was back in my happy place as I prepared to take on what I now consider to be a life-changing experience.
And that is not just down to the taste of the sandwich, but the price - 20p!
In a world of inflation, where the price of everything is skyrocketing, I couldn't believe I would get such a tasty treat for cheaper than a Freddo.
The battered jam sandwich is exactly what it says on the tin, but it reminded me more of a deep-fried doughnut that would cost close to £5 in London.
It was fluffy and warming on the inside whilst the delightful batter provided a delicious crunch on the outside.
The light dusting of sugar on the top brought the whole thing together and by that point, I no longer had any consideration for my arteries as I slowly began salivating whilst looking at the delight.
My first bite was one of total shock, as I had quite honestly not expected much before shock turned to joy and joy turned to astonishment.

I quickly ravaged the whole thing and turned my head back to the shop, asking myself, 'can I really get away with another one?'.
Luckily common sense prevailed, and I drove away trying to think of anything else than another one of those heavenly desserts.
I do of course understand that I probably couldn't get away with eating one of them a day and live to see the end of the month, but as a very special treat what more could you want – a proper winter warmer.
Holly Tree Chippy's reputation does proceed them, and is widely considered to be one of, if not the best in Blackburn and its prices match the quality of the food.
