Highlights included new plans for community development, a rundown of new local businesses and an introduction to Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course's new GM. It also included a celebration of Hyne's Industries' 100th year. 'Austintown has been really good to us. We started off on Oakwood. March Madness expected to bring in local sports bettors as health experts warn of addiction
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – March Madness has arrived and local sportsbooks are gearing up for one of the busiest weekends of the year. It comes during Problem Gambling Awareness Month. The message throughout the month is to gamble responsibly — fun over financial frustration. The first games have already tipped off and the first bets have already been placed, but spots like Hollywood Gaming in Austintown are bound to be busy as the college basketball tournament begins. 'It's a big time for us. On the NFL side, you kind of get one day. This is four days. We'll have it covered tip to tip,' said Kevin Brogan, Hollywood Gaming marketing director. The Big Dance has tipped off and now bettors get a chance to punch their tickets for March Madness. According to the American Gaming Association, the amount of legal betting on March Madness is twice as much as the Super Bowl and could top $3 billion nationally this year. The ESPN Bet Sportsbook at Hollywood Gaming figures to get plenty of play over the weekend. 'There was a lot of interest last week. We certainly were pulling for the Penguins. It would've been great to have them and that local fan base here,' Brogan said. March Madness also coincides with Problem Gambling Awareness Month and local health experts are shining a spotlight on the slippery slope of gambling. 'Gambling can be just as addictive as drugs or alcohol. Gambling, even though it is a process addiction — it's not something we are putting in our body — but it does create that same high that drugs and alcohol can create, and it activates the same reward centers of the brain as drugs or alcohol,' said Stephanie Geer, Problem Gambling Program Coordinator at Meridian Healthcare. Their message is simple — plan ahead and set limits, both with money and time. Never gamble money for necessities like food or rent, and treat the enterprise like a form of entertainment. 'If we're gambling as a means to bring in an income, or to escape how we might feel or stressors in our life, that's a red flag,' Geer said. You can also use tools like Pause Before You Play to build a structure for reduced risk, whether you're a new player or you regularly roll the dice. 'This is a time where we can acquire some new folks and folks might be looking for something to do. Sports betting is a younger male demographic and that's something that we love to host upstairs,' Brogan said. Anyone concerned about their gambling or betting decisions can also reach out to Ohio's Problem Gambling Helpline, connecting people with local resources that are free and confidential. Locals making bets ahead of the Big Game
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — With the Super Bowl on Sunday night, some in the Valley are making big bets. National NPR estimates $1.39 billion will be spent on bets for the Big Game, which is up from last year. At Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course in Austintown, people were making their Super Bowl and other sports bets throughout the day. Marketing Director Kevin Brogan said the Super Bowl brings in crowds of people from sports enthusiasts to those who don't typically make sports bets. As for how the Valley is betting, he says it's a mix. 'Unlike the college championship, where the fan support was overwhelmingly dressed in red, tonight we'll see a lot of green jerseys throughout our sportsbook too. With the game, pretty much a pick 'em, this should be a fun one to watch,' Brogan said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
