Ocean Springs mother seeks justice for son's death during Facebook Marketplace transaction
HOLMES COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The mother of an Ocean Springs man, who was killed during a Facebook Marketplace transaction in Holmes County, is speaking out after years without justice. Investigators said Kyle Craig traveled from Ocean Springs to Holmes County in June 2021 in order to buy an ATV he found on Facebook Marketplace. He was reported missing by his family after several hours passed without contact. Trial date set for ex-Capitol police officer charged in death of Jaylen Lewis Craig's body was later found on Long Branch Road with multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators arrested five suspects in connection to the homicide, but they have all since been released on bond. Craig's mother, Julie, said court dates keep getting delayed, and her family feels ignored. 'Numerous times I've reached out, and I get answers like, 'Well, it's still under investigation.' It's always been postponed. This family deserves answers. We deserve justice,' she said. The Holmes County Sheriff's Office said the investigation remains active, and the district attorney is working to hold those involved accountable. Craig was survived by his four-year-old son. Holmes County Jail seeks funds for expansion project
HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Holmes County Jail was built in 2001. At the time, it was a huge improvement, housing up to 25 inmates. That's grown to 125 inmates now. But as the population has grown, so has the need for more jail space. Holmes County Sheriff's Office takes charge of Emergency Medical Services 'It was built with the intentions of adding on at a future date. And we've come to that date now,' Holmes County Sheriff John Tate said. Tate says the jail is at its capacity, 130 inmates. 'We're usually run in overcapacity most of the time. We just add beds in there and, you know, to put them on the floor, you have to accommodate. That's the best way we can,' Tate said. Sheriff Tate says an expansion would also support the jail's faith-based and drug recovery programs. 'With the programs we got going on down there trying to help people get their lives back together and stuff, it's going to help out a lot with the more space we get,' Tate added. Tate wants to add an additional housing wing, creating space for 64 more they need to find the money first. Kiwanis Club's 65th Pancake Days to benefit Bay County youth 'We're a poor county, so we have to rely on outside revenue for us through the state legislators appropriation and different grants and different things, if possible, even federal grants to be able to, you know, to get the money to add on,' Tate said. Holmes County commissioners met with state lawmakers last month to ask for a state appropriation for expansion. If they received funding in July, they'll begin the project's design phase. Shots fired during road rage incident in Wayne Township; Dundee teen in custody
DUNDEE ‒ A 19-year-old Dundee man is being held in the Tuscarawas County Jail after several shots were fired during a road rage incident Saturday night in Wayne Township. The suspect is facing two counts of improperly handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony; and one count of aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor. According to an announcement from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office, a 34-year-old New Philadelphia man reported the road rage incident at around 8:09 p.m. He said an unknown person fired a gun from a moving vehicle. The incident began in the Wilmot area and continued into Tuscarawas County, said Detective Capt. Adam Fisher of the sheriff's office. Witnesses told deputies that between six and seven shots were fired in the Walnut Creek Bottom Road and Dundee Wilmot Road area of Wayne Township. Police later located a shell casing at the intersection of those two roads, Fisher said. The New Philadelphia man provided a description of the suspect's vehicle, a Ford Focus, which was found in Dundee. After talking with the owner of the vehicle, deputies determined that the 19-year-old was the person who fired the gun, Fisher said. When the suspect was searched, several spent shell casings were found in his pocket. They matched the shell casing found at the intersection. The weapon used in the incident, a .40 caliber handgun, had been thrown into a nearby creek. Witnesses provided a general area for deputies to search, he said. The Holmes County Sheriff's Office was contacted, and that agency provided a K-9 to assist in the search. The weapon was found in a shoebox in the creek.
