Maintainer Corporation opens ‘Maintainer University' for employee training

SHELDON, Iowa (KCAU) — A specialized kind of education can be found in Sheldon at Maintainer Corporation of Iowa. The company has been crafting 'premium truck bodies' since 1976, but just recently built a new space that is home to 'Maintainer University.' The specialized training center provides new employees a starting point for their employment while also giving current employees a chance to explore new opportunities within the company. The university includes simulated paint, welding and electrical bay, as well as other plant operations. But just as importantly to company management is real work training, including everything from learning a language to banking skills. 'I'd say it's about 70 percent vocational wiring, painting electrical hydraulics and 30 percent committed to helping people develop personally anything from continuing education to learning a new language,' Maintainer Corporation of Iowa President and CEO Shelley Morris said. Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon seeing growth 'This may be the new way of doing training around the area and how to change what we're doing to really help the employee,' Vice President of Engineering & Manufacturing Shane Vander Kooi said. 'Do a better job in their work but also in their own life, no matter what that is.' It's often said that knowledge is power. Training manager Milt McPike says getting the right people on the right bus makes a big difference when it comes to employee satisfaction. 'We try not to pigeonhole people to one thing,' he said. 'There's multiple things we can do here to find out what the best path is for you and what makes you happy.' Maintainer is located on the south side of Sheldon just off of Highway 60. Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon seeing growth

SHELDON, Iowa (KCAU) — Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) in Sheldon opened in 1966 and has continued to see growth, with record enrollment reported in fall 2024. One area of growth is in the nursing program. The college recently completed a $9 million project, constructing a two-story addition to house the nursing and radiologic technology programs and adding 48,000 square feet (more than double the department's space). Officials say that it's helping put professionals into the health career field. Maintainer Corporation opens 'Maintainer University' for employee training 'As of this year, we had a record enrollment of 498 students and we're really excited to place all those students in jobs,' Associate Dean of Health Kevin Miller said. 'NCC has a really high grad rate, but also has a high placement rate, so we are excited for those individuals [to get] into a career they love but also to take care of the people they love as well.' The Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance program at NCC is designed to develop occupational skills in operating various types of heavy equipment. Instructors say there is a constant need for professionals in this area. 'I've never talked to a contractor who has too much help,' heavy equipment instructor Shirley Obbink said. 'Every one of them is looking for more guys. I don't think there's ever going to be a shortage of that.' Northwest Iowa Community College has approximately 2,000 students enrolled this semester. Sheldon National Bank embezzlement scheme shocked Iowans back in 1961

SHELDON, Iowa (KCAU) — In 1961, Sheldon was featured on national TV and in newspapers across the country for a case of large-scale criminal activity. William Iverson was president of the Sheldon National Bank for 40 years, but in Jan. 1961, his married daughter Burnice Geiger was arrested and charged with the embezzlement of more than $2.1 million from her father's bank. It was later determined that Geiger had her own private staircase to her office that only she had a key to. She confessed without incident when confronted by FDIC examiners. Last Iowa Ben Franklin store found in Sheldon 'The embezzlement was of $2,126,859,' Sheldon historian and author Tom Whorley said. 'At the time, it was the largest embezzlement of a bank in the United States. In fact, Walter Cronkite had it as his lead story in his newscast in 1961… Her dad never went an checked on her at all. Like, someone said the sun would rise and set in her as far as he was concerned.' Geiger was sentenced to 15 years in prison but paroled out after five years. It was never discovered where the money went. The museum still has the night deposit box from the bank. Geiger came back to Sheldon and made her home with her aging parents. She landed a job in Sanborn, keeping a low profile in Sheldon, where she is buried today. For more of KCAU 9's Hometown Proud stories, CLICK HERE. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Sheldon Prairie Museum's military collection includes Philo Woods' Civil War diary

SHELDON, Iowa (KCAU) — The Sheldon Prairie Museum features an amazing collection of history and artifacts. The museum building opened in 1908 as a Carnegie Library. Museum director Millie Vos and a group of volunteers are there to share the history of Sheldon with visitors. One fact is that Sheldon is named after Israel Sheldon, a stockholder in the railroad, which played a big part in the city's early growth. The museum has many different collections — in fact, about half the basement is dedicated to military service throughout the years, including the hand-written diary of an Iowa soldier serving in the Civil War. Philo Woods was born in Pennsylvania but moved with his parents to Auburn, Iowa (north of Carroll) in 1854. The Civil War broke out during his freshman year in college, and he enlisted in Company C of the 12th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Woods started writing a diary in the early fall of 1861 and continued to write throughout his Civil War involvement. Christian music festival RiseFest returning to Sheldon for 2025 'When he was there, it was his job to write what they did every day and what happened with everything,' Vols said. 'It happened to be that they were found here at a place in Sheldon.' 'Each day, what they did, what they ate, what activity was going on in the war,' historian and author Tom Whorley said. 'It's a true historical artifact we're happy to have here in our museum.' The actual diaries are kept in a locked vault. It's believed the museum is also home to the only remaining 1837 cannon: the 12-pound bronze mountain howitzer cannon, one of 12 ordered by the U.S. War Department. The museum has detailed exhibits for nearly every American conflict. For more of KCAU 9's Hometown Proud stories, CLICK HERE. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
