The administration building was not open to the public during the incident due to an unrelated power outage, authorities said.
Officials reported an injured sheriff's officer at 9:30 a.m. Rivera was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
A preliminary investigation by the Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Unit says the incident 'appears to be accidental in nature at this time.'
The Regional Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death. Circumstances leading up to the officer's death are still under investigation.
