Motormouth: Does costly repair on newer car seem right?
Q: I bought a 2021 Subaru Outback right off the showroom floor in May 2021. When I brought my vehicle into the Subaru dealership for service in November 2024, I was told the control arm bushings were torn and needed to be replaced at a cost of $710.63. Does this seem realistic, that is, the need to do this and the cost? My vehicle has less than 29,000 miles. R.B. Methuen, Massachusetts A: The control arm bushings should usually last about 100,000 miles on most cars, but that depends on things like poor roads, potholes, salty environment or even a crash. If it were my car, I would replace the entire control arm and save a bundle on labor. Q: I have a 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid that just hit 25,000 miles. When getting it serviced at the dealership yesterday, they stated that I was in need of new tires soon. The reading was 5/32 and they said by 30,000 miles I should replace them. How can a vehicle this new need tires so soon? Do new cars come with poor quality tires these days? The ones that came on my SUV were Bridgestone Ecopia tires. I wasn't expecting this expense so soon! B.H., Davenport, Iowa A: There may be a few reasons that original tires wear faster than replacement tires. One possibility is that the tires are made with a softer compound, which provides for all kinds of driving conditions and locales. The tires may be underinflated and not topped off when they arrived at the dealership. New owners often push their car harder than the old jalopy. Replacement tires usually have a 50,000-mile warranty, but the originals often do not. Q: I cannot glance at my digital mirror in my Chevy Equinox without experiencing the same pain one gets when looking through thick eyeglasses. Anyone else? I'm 69. I'm guessing seniors are especially vulnerable. T.D., Schaumburg, Illinois A: General Motors issued a technical service bulletin on this subject stating that "The cause of the condition may be that when viewed in full sunlight, the mirror appears to be blurry or wavy. The distortion is actually a reflection of the left side I/P (instrument panel) vent onto the driver's side glass, as reflected in the mirror." I suggest temporarily draping a rag over the vent to see if this is true. Q: We have a 2024 Toyota RAV4 XLE Hybrid. The ride is very stiff – rather uncomfortable. Is there anything we can do to soften the ride? It is leased, so we can't do anything too drastic. A.A., Orono, Minnesota A: Hybrid tires can ride hard because tire makers often rank tread design over traction and comfort. That may lead to a harsher ride. I checked with the experts at and their favorite for a softer ride is Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3. I'm not sure what your definition of "drastic" is, but a set of four tires will likely set you back about $200 per hoop plus mounting, balancing and tax. 6 Best SUVs Under $40,000 for Families on a Budget in 2025
Looking for a family-friendly SUV that won't break the bank? There are plenty of options, whether you need extra space, top-of-the-line safety features or just something reliable, even if you're on a tight budget. Car and Driver put together a list of the best family SUVs in 2025 based on roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and how enjoyable the vehicle is to drive. Explore More: Read Next: From that list, here are six 2025 family-friendly SUVs under $40,000. Starting price: $37,805 EPA MPG: 20-22 combined The 2025 Kia Telluride is a midsize SUV with lots of space. For the sixth year in a row, it won the Kelley Blue Book 3-Row Midsize SUV Best Buy Award. It's a great choice for big families, capable of seating up to eight, and it has plenty of headroom and legroom for all occupants. It comes with expected safety features, like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, but it also comes with highway driving assistance that uses adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Check Out: Starting price: $36,045 EPA MPG: 40 combined The 2025 Honda CR-V Hybrid is a compact SUV, and the efficient hybrid engine can help you save money at the pump. The base model has ample cargo space and comes with a suite of tech features, including adaptive cruise control and lane centering assistance. Starting price: $31,495 EPA MPG: 28-30 combined While you may spend more on fuel with the 2025 Honda CR-V than the CR-V Hybrid, it still gets great gas mileage. It was also voted the No. 1 crossover SUV and best compact SUV by Car and Driver. It earned the second spot for safety in the safest SUVs list. According to Honda, the front seats are designed to reduce driver fatigue on long road trips, and there's also a large center console bin and reclining back seats with extra legroom, Car and Driver reported. Starting price: $38,675 MPG: 21 combined The 2025 Hyundai Palisade is a top pick among Car and Driver, Edmunds and U.S. News & World Report. Although the handling isn't as stable as some of its competitors, per Edmunds, it's spacious in all three rows. Plus, there are tons of standard and optional high-tech features, and it has comfortable seating and ride quality, according to Edmunds. Starting price: $39,300 EPA MPG: 25 combined The Mazda CX-90 is another three-row SUV that made the list. Edmunds pointed out that the vehicle is 'undeniably luxurious' and outperforms other vehicles in its class; however, you may wish for more room in the third row and cargo spaces. Starting price: $31,720 EPA MPG: 25-28 combined The Mazda CX-50 is rugged and has great handling — and even the base model comes with all-wheel drive. Its interior compares to luxury SUVs of a similar size, Car and Driver pointed out, but some of its competitors offer more passenger space. Also of note is that the more desirable trim levels increase the price to over $40,000. Get a Great Deal: Best New Car Lease Deals for February 2025
Automakers are off to an exceptionally rocky start to 2025 with President Trump threatening tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico. Current agreements postpone North American duties on imported cars for all of February, after which prices on all kinds of cars could skyrocket. As it stands, if you know where to look, lease prices are staying low while two-year lease terms are becoming more popular. We've found deals on four EVs, plus some old-fashioned sports cars and sedans. Make sure you first read our leasing guide. We've covered everything that may get glossed over in the showroom: advertising fees, money factors, residuals, legal implications, and all the other fine print that could cost you thousands more than you'd expect. When comparing similar cars, be aware that a lower monthly price often demands more money up front. As with any national lease special, enter your ZIP code on an automaker's website to check if these deals apply to your area. Prices do not include taxes or fees and may be higher or lower depending on your location. Research is always your friend. There are no national lease deals on the gas-powered 2025 Equinox. For February, GM switched gears (or rather, one gear) to push the Equinox EV instead. It has the most estimated range (319 miles) of any electric SUV at this price, and its acceleration is on par with a Honda CR-V Hybrid that leases for considerably more money. This price is for a front-wheel-drive 2LT and is available to customers who have a current lease of a 2020 or newer non-GM vehicle. Everyone else needs to cough up another $2500 at signing payment. The reimagines the hippie Sixties, but its high price and retro style limit its appeal to hippies in their seventies. As such, the ID.4, the workaday Volkswagen EV, is trying for mass appeal with lower prices and shorter terms. The 206-mile range comes up short, though the Standard S trim on this lease is nicely loaded with 12-way power massaging seats, a panoramic moonroof, heated steering wheel, and ambient lighting. The 2025 models will be more expensive to start, significantly so for the large-battery variants. Lincoln has shied away from national lease deals, despite its competitors promoting their offers every month. A new wind must be blowing the Corsair's sails, however. This lease for the all-wheel-drive Premiere is refreshingly short (perhaps ending in time for a fully redesigned Corsair) and requires a trade-in of a current lease or any car from 1995 or newer. Tesla's Cybertruck has apparently saturated its initial market of tech and finance bros to the point where Tesla needs to court Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T customers. Hence, for the base all-wheel-drive trim, Tesla has cut monthly lease prices from nearly $1100 to under $800 with the same signing payment. The single-motor version has yet to appear, and while Tesla was offering charging and Full Self-Driving for free, that deal has disappeared. Still, this is the best price to drive a stainless-steel polygon for three years. Sedan DealsThe Sentra brings big-car style in a small and affordable package. It's usually among the cheapest compact sedans to lease, and for February, it's hundreds less per month than a Kia K4 or Hyundai Elantra with similar signing payments. This lease is for the SV, which comes with alloy wheels, push-button start, and adaptive cruise control, along with Nissan accessories like floor mats, a trunk mat, and mud flaps. Nissan also lets lessees add more miles at any time for a 15-cent discount versus the overage penalty when turning in the car. Two-seat sports cars have either costly lease offers or none at all. But unlike its corporate twin, the Toyota 86, Subaru pushes its peppy little BRZ every month with low signing payments on the base Premium trim. With a stick shift, limited-slip diff, and plenty of power in its lightweight, superbly balanced chassis, the rear-wheel-drive BRZ is a great deal even if you have to keep it garaged until spring comes. Care to step up to small-sports-car royalty? Consider the Miata RF with its Porsche Targa-style retractable hard top, which makes cold-weather cruising much more enjoyable than the regular ragtop. The Miata doesn't have the top-end power of a BRZ, and its cabin is cramped by most any standard, but the driving enjoyment is second to none. Heated leather seats, navigation, and Mazda's six-speed manual come standard on this RF Grand Touring. The electric successor to Hellcats and Hemis hasn't been on sale for six months, and the discounts for Dodge's new coupe are already piling on. For a low-mileage, short-term lease, trying a Daytona R/T with all-wheel drive, 496 horsepower, and a claimed 308-mile range could be satisfying, and if you don't like, maybe swap into one of the six-cylinder or four-door models, which are supposed to arrive later this year. Then again, you probably could negotiate a hefty discount on one of the more than 1200 unsold 2023-model Charger sedans. May we also mention there are unsold, unmarked Charger Pursuit sedans available?
