Aubrey Plaza Makes Red Carpet Return At Cannes 5 Months After Hubby Jeff Baena's Death
Last Updated: Aubrey Plaza returned to the spotlight at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for her film Honey Don't, marking her first major appearance since losing her husband, Jeff Baena. Aubrey Plaza returned to the spotlight on May 24 at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, where she walked the red carpet for her new film Honey Don't. She looked calm and elegant in a long dress, standing beside her co-stars. This was her first major public appearance since losing her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, a few months ago. The last time fans saw her at an event was during SNL's 50th anniversary, where she wore one of Jeff's tie-dye shirts as a quiet tribute to him. Before the 78th Cannes Film Festival came to a close, Aubrey Plaza walked the red carpet with her Honey Don't! co-stars Margaret Qualley and Charlie Day. This time, she skipped the dramatic fashion and kept things simple but striking. She wore a sleeveless nude gown with lace, colourful beads, and a sheer lower half, paired with a plain white bodysuit underneath. Her makeup was soft, with no extra hair accessories. te amo aubrey plaza te amo — ticia (@hahnxplaza) May 23, 2025 After the screening, Aubrey was seen chatting with guests and posing for photos, though she chose not to give a speech. Her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, died by suicide in January at 47, and this was Aubrey's first big red carpet since the loss. Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena were together for more than ten years, but in the months before his death, they had been separated for almost four months. After Baena's suicide, an investigation revealed he had been struggling emotionally and was in therapy. In October 2024, he sent some worrying texts and made a phone call to Aubrey, which led her to ask a friend to check on him. On January 3, a house helper found Baena unresponsive at his home near Los Angeles, where he was later pronounced dead. Aubrey spoke out on January 6, saying, 'This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support," and she asked for privacy during this difficult time. First Published:

‘Honey Don't!' Review: Margaret Qualley Stars As A Gutsy Private Eye In Ethan Coen's Messy Comic Noir
Even after his death in 2004, there's still only one Russ Meyer, and this, the second solo outing from the Coen brothers' Ethan, is a sad reminder of the talent he took with him to the grave. Meyer gave big parts to big women in films that shouted about SEX! in great big capital letters, bringing an artistry to the drive-in but never patronizing the sizable blue-collar audience that dug his bawdy humor. Honey Don't! would benefit from even just a fraction of Meyer's genius; as it is, there's a reason why Coen's film was tucked away in a graveyard slot on the last weekend of the Cannes Film Festival, much like you keep self-raising flour on a shelf that's near impossible to reach because you don't really ever use it. The opening is certainly striking; a car is being chased, and it crashes somewhere in the desert, instantly killing the female driver. Out of nowhere comes a beautiful, bob-haired brunette, a Mia Wallace lookalike (Lera Abova) who wears leopard print on top of leopard print and rides a cute mod scooter. She inspects the body and rips a distinctive ring off its finger: a cross with a red dot. Cue the music (The Animals' 'We Gotta Get Out of This Place') and a hectic Mondo Topless-style montage of the story's setting, a very rundown Bakersfield. (You might be expecting to hear Carl Perkins' song 'Honey Don't', but Coen saves that for the end and uses Wanda Jackson's version instead.) More from Deadline 'Imago' Director Déni Oumar Pitsaev On Winning Two Prizes In Cannes: "I Didn't Expect It At All" Palm Dog: 'The Love That Remains', 'Sirât', 'Pillion' And 'Amores Perros' Honored - Cannes Film Festival Ethan Coen's 'Honey Don't!' Gets 6.5-Minute Ovation In Cannes This dead-end town is where we meet Honey O'Donahue (Margaret Qualley), a hella lesbian and gutsy private eye who likes to drink ('Heavily. It's a point of pride'). Working with the local feds, Honey begins to investigate the crash, even though it has already been written up as an accident. What Honey isn't telling them, though, is the fact the dead woman, a local bartender, had asked for her services in the days before her death. The case takes her to the local church, where pastor Drew Devlin (Chris Evans, in the kind of role Charles Napier would usually play) has a very hands-on way of communing with his congregation, and also the local police station, where she hooks up with cop M.G. Falcone (Aubrey Plaza), and the two embark on a passionate affair. It promises to be a kitsch laugh-riot, but, like the last film, Drive-Away Dolls (2024), Honey Don't! doesn't tick any of the necessary boxes to become the cult film it obviously would like to be. The idea of a lesbian private eye isn't even that new either, since Jess Franco had two in a pair of his most enjoyable exploitation movies (Sadisterotika and Kiss Me, Monster, both 1969). Qualley, who handles the role with a sass it doesn't really deserve, carries the film to the finish line, which is no easy task given the proliferation of messy subplots, from the reappearance of Honey's abusive father to the provenance of the mysterious brunette, who turns out to be French and in the pay of the pastor, whom she warns that 'ze purple' — whoever they are — are nut vary 'appy wiz 'im. Mercifully, it's all over in under 90 minutes, but the ending — as well as being, well, just silly — raises more questions than it satisfactorily answers. Does this mean there's going to be a third movie, effectively making this the second part of a loosely linked trilogy? Honey, don't even think about it. Aubrey Plaza has new movies with 2 MCU heavyweights and a Hollywood legend
Delaware native Aubrey Plaza, known for "White Lotus'' and "Agatha All Along," will team up with MCU heavyweights in some upcoming films, including one with Chris Evans in the dark comedy "Honey Don't!" The Ethan Coen-directed film is set to hit theaters late this summer. But that's just one of the new movies on the horizon for the Emmy-nominated star. Here's a closer look at "Honey Don't,'' and other projects Plaza has lined up, which include "Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds and "Aquaman" lead Jason Momoa, plus more. IMDB describes "Honey Don't!" as a dark comedy following Honey O'Donahue (Margaret Qualley), a small-town private investigator, who's working to solve a string of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church. The film stars Chris Evans (Reverend Drew), Aubrey Plaza (MG) and Charlie Day. According to Variety, Qualley "worked with Coen and Cooke on 'Drive-Away Dolls,' the first of their lesbian B-movie trilogy that 'Honey Don't' continues. The film marks a sharp contrast from Evans' famous boy-scout role as the beloved MCU superhero Captain America. Aubrey Plaza tips hat to Rivers: She'll be joined with other stars The trailer for "Honey Don't!" teases a tangled web of mystery and deception. It opens with Aubrey Plaza, dressed as a police officer, discreetly handing Honey O'Donahue an address, setting her on a path of investigation. Honey arrives at a crime scene where Reverend Drew greets her near an overturned car with a dead woman inside. She removes a ring from the woman's hand, noticing it bears the same cross-shaped symbol as the Reverend's church, Four-Way Temple. In another scene, the Reverend delivers a sermon in a white robe, standing in front of two large portraits of himself, one in sunglasses. He's later seen having a threesome in the church's sacristy. The sex act is interrupted by a gunman, who bursts through the door and blindly fires several shots at the bed. Honey's investigation takes her to what appears to be the dead woman's home, where she discovers a white church robe and bondage-looking lingerie. The Rev questions Honey's interest in what he says is merely a "traffic fatality," before an attempt to charm her over drinks. As tensions rise, the Rev shoots someone off-camera. Honey asks Plaza to help her on the case, and she joins in. Honey is seen having a violent battle with dudes, while Plaza appears to be hitting someone with a weapon off camera. This sets the stage for a twisted, dark comedy with the Queen of Deadpan. "Honey Don't!," which will debut at Cannes this month, is in theaters only on Aug. 22. According to Plaza's IMDB page, her other upcoming films include the animated "Animal Friends" with Jason Momoa ("Aquaman") and Ryan Reynolds ("Deadpool"). The film (listed in production) is about two animals that become unlikely friends. The drama "Olga Dies Dreaming" is a TV series where one episode is completed, per IMDB. It follows a Nuyorican brother and sister, and their careers among New York City's elite in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Another film in the works is "The Ark and the Aardvark," an animated adventure about an aardvark named Gilbert that lands the job of shepherding all the animals onto Noah's Ark. Plaza is cast as the voice for a character named Brain. The film is in production and includes Craig Robinson ("The Office") and Miles Teller ("Top Gun: Maverick"). Aubrey Plaza & husband Jeff Baena: They separated before his death, new report confirms Hollywood legend Susan Sarandon and Plaza will appear in the upcoming drama "The Accompanist," alongside rising young actor Everly Carganilla. The film is the directorial debut for "The Office" actor Zach Woods. Deadline says the film is about 9-year-old Emily (Everly Carganilla) who accidentally tells the school nurse her dementia-stricken grandfather almost got them killed. This prompts a rookie child welfare agent Sarah (Aubrey Plaza) to pop up at their house and investigate. Emily is taken and ends up with Sylvia (Susan Sarandon), her new foster parent. Sylvia is described as "mysterious, witchy, funny, and unpredictable." The woman is playful and warm, but things get complicated because she the foster mom is haunted by her past. "The Accompanist" is produced in association with Aubrey Plaza's Evil Hag Productions and Cinereach, plus the film's screenplay was co-written by Woods and Brandon Gardner, per Deadline. The film is currently in post-production. Plaza's IMDB page also mentions the John Waters-directed film "Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance" as being in pre-production. While Waters originally tapped Plaza as Marsha Sprinkle, a scammer and suitcase thief, Waters announced in November that the film is no longer happening.
