Florida Blue gifts $50K to aid FSU social work students
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Social work is a calling. It's a tough, low-paying job that's in high demand. Many social workers enter the field with college loan debt.
Florida's largest health care insurer is trying to relieve that loan debt.
Florida Blue donated $50,000 on Wednesday to Florida State University, Panama City, to create an endowed scholarship for the social work bachelor's degree program.
The scholarship comes at a critical time. With people still recovering from Hurricane Michael and COVID, there's a huge need for trained professionals in mental health and social services.

'Social work is so critical and important, whether it's inside of a hospital or outside of a hospital, in order to have employees to support that need it. It's important for us to ensure that we support workforce development and work with organizations like FSU,' Hong Potomski said.
FSU-PC officials say they currently have 40 students majoring in social work.
They're accepting applications for the fall semester.
