Filmmaker Hong Sang-soo joins Cannes jury panel
Director Hong Sang-soo has been selected as a member of the Competition jury for the 78th Cannes Film Festival, according to the festival's website Tuesday.
The prolific director-screenwriter joins eight other members on the prestigious jury, which includes American actress and filmmaker Halle Berry and Indian director and screenwriter Payal Kapadia.
The festival described Hong as "a staple" of the festival for many years, adding that he "is evolving while remaining faithful to his cinema, which is pure and intimate."
Four of Hong's own films have previously competed for the Palme d'Or in Cannes: "Woman in the Future of Man" in 2004, "Tale of Cinema" in 2005, "In Another Country" in 2012 and "The Day After" in 2017.
Hong is the sixth South Korean film personality to serve on the Competition jury, following directors Shin Sang-ok and Lee Chang-dong, actress Jeon Do-yeon, director Park Chan-wook and actor Song Kang-ho.
While no South Korean feature films were selected for the main competition this year, director Joung Yu-mi's 15-minute animated film "Glasses" will compete in the Critics' Week short film competition and Heo Ga-young's "First Summer" has been invited to the La Cinef section, which highlights exceptional short films from film schools worldwide.
