PIE hosts 50th Honor Flight welcoming 77 veterans home from D.C.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (BLOOM) — A patriotic welcome is planned at St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport (PIE) on Tuesday, April 15, as 77 veterans return home from a day-long Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., visiting war memorials built in their honor. The community is invited to gather at PIE around 8 p.m. to greet the veterans—part of the West Central Florida Honor Flight's 52nd mission and PIE's 50th hosted flight—after their return from the nation's capital on an Allegiant Air charter. Originally established in 2011 for WWII veterans, the Honor Flight program continues to serve military heroes from various conflicts. PIE itself has historic ties to the military. Before becoming a civilian airport in 1946, it served as Pinellas Army Airfield, a training base for WWII fighter pilots. 'This milestone flight is a celebration of service and sacrifice,' said Tracy Luchtenberg, president of Honor Flight of West Central Florida. 'We encourage everyone to wear their red, white, and blue and help give these veterans a rousing welcome home.' The District Pub, located before security on the airport's second floor, will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. for guests ahead of the reception. Free parking will be available in both short- and long-term lots for those attending the event. PIE Airport Director Tom Jewsbury called it a privilege to host the flights, adding, 'It has been our honor to celebrate our veterans and welcome the community. Please join us to thank them.' Honor Flights offer veterans an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials commemorating their service. The next missions are scheduled for June 10, Sept. 16, and Oct. 21. Spring 2025 Honor Flight: Friday, April 4
BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR) – The Central and Southwest Virginia Honor Flight Mission 10 will be taking two veterans who served in World War II and seventeen who served in Vietnam to Washington D.C. free of cost. WFXR's Jermaine Ferell takes a look before the hub takes off. The honor flight will depart from the Bedford National D-Day Memorial at 10 a.m. on April 4 to Washington, D.C., and will return Sunday, April 6 around noon. The group brings area veterans to war memorials created in their honor, which for many is the thanks they never received for their service. The Honor Flight began back in 2005 and since then has taken around 317,128 veterans to their memorials at no cost to them. Time is precious to WW II veterans, and according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs 2024 statistics, 66,143 of the 16.4 million Americans who served in WW II are alive today. Out of those numbers, around 2,121 reside in Virginia. Southwest & Central Virginia Honor Flight prepares for 10th annual trip to Washington D.C. Guardians accompany each veteran and are trained to assist the veterans in any way they can, for example, pushing wheelchairs, carrying belongings, or enjoying the day that is filled with reflection and celebration. Guardians are asked to donate $400 to help with the cost of their trip, and guardian applications are screened and accepted on a first come, first served basis. Honor Flights prioritizes veterans from WW II, and terminally ill veterans with Korean and Vietnam service eras are considered on a space-available basis. Colorado Young Marines honored for a year of community service
THORNTON, Colo. (KDVR) — They're not in the military yet, but they're well on their way. The Foothills Young Marines spent the last year volunteering in the community and leading by example. Now they're being rewarded for their hard work. They were just named Unit of the Year for the region. They'll now compete with five other units from across the country for National Unit of the Year. Presidents Day: Is mail delivered, trash collected on Monday? 'The Young Marines is a youth program for boys and girls ages 8 to 18 or completion of high school. We promote different life values and skills, citizenship,' said Nick Stone, unit commander. 'And some of our notable achievements this year included partnering with the VFW to conduct the VFW airlift where we loaded 16,000 pounds of food that was distributed across the state. We've manned hydration tables at the Children's Hospital 5K. We've helped paint houses for disabled veterans in the Friends for Firestone. We always work with the Honor Flight, so we've greeted each and every veteran home on the last five Honor Flights. So we've done a lot of community service,' he added. Members of the Young Marines often go on to attend service academies like West Point and serve in the armed forces. 'In the future, I do plan on being in the Marine Corps. And I truly do believe that this unit will help me develop leadership skills, integrity, teamwork, and most importantly, a connection with other people,' said James Hickey, a Young Marine who was also honored as Young Marine of the Year for the Foothills unit. FOX31 Newsletters: Sign up to get breaking news sent to your inbox 'My friends and family are very, very supportive of this. They think it's actually really great that I'm taking this opportunity to go and express myself in this way,' said Galena Sheehan, a member of the Foothills Young Marines. Because of their hard work, we thought they deserved another honor. That's why we've named the Foothills Young Marines our FOX31 Serving Those Who Serve Heroes of the Month for February 2025. The unit will receive a plaque from our Serving Those Who Serve sponsors at American Furniture Warehouse and Plumbline Services.
