‘I am brave': 5-year-old leukemia patient receives aid from Hope Place Kuching
Hope Place representative Mary Vun (right) delivers the aid to Lijawati and her children during the visit. KUCHING (June 6): Hope Place Kuching has extended aid to a five-year-old boy diagnosed with leukemia, providing essential items such as diapers, children's milk powder, school supplies, and toys. Muhammad Aqil Hazwan Khalid was diagnosed with Precursor B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia last September and was immediately hospitalised for a month. His plight came to the attention of Hope Place through his mother, Lijawati, 37, who shared that the family has been struggling financially, as her husband is the sole breadwinner. 'Muhammad Aqil lives in Kampung Semera, Asajaya with his parents and nine-year-old sister. Although he is now back home, he still looks like any active five-year-old boy,' said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) in a statement. However, Lijawati revealed that her son has a low immune system, falls sick easily, and bruises often. He began chemotherapy last year and was initially fed through a tube, but due to frequent discomfort and tugging, doctors have since switched to oral medication During a recent visit, Lijawati shared what Muhammad Aqil said to his doctors at the hospital: 'I am brave. I am not afraid of eating medicine or needles.' She added that her son always says he wants to be well and healthy again – words that brought tears to her eyes. 'Though he is still so young, he is very determined and full of courage,' said Hope Place. It is understood that Muhammad Aqil undergoes chemotherapy once every two weeks. During earlier intensive sessions, he had to endure painful procedures involving three needles injected near the lungs and heart area. 'Although this procedure is usually very painful, Lijawati said Muhammad Aqil never once cried or protested. He has bravely completed 13 chemotherapy sessions so far. 'At present, the treatment only requires injections in the arm,' the NGO said. His father, Khalid, 37, works as a daily-paid construction labourer. Despite having her hands full caring for the children, Lijawati also tries to earn extra income by selling homemade 'kuih', 'kuih sepit', and fried chicken in front of their house. 'My boy's courage inspires me to fight for a better future,' she said. Muhammad Aqil currently receives monthly financial assistance of RM300 from Sarawak Social Welfare Department, along with transport allowance from the Sarawak Children's Cancer Society for his hospital visits. Those wishing to donate may do so via Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160) or visit its Facebook page for the S Pay Global QR code. KUCHING (May 13): Hope Place Kuching is supplying food aid to a 51-year-old widow struggling to make ends meet since her husband passed away in March. Julia Bujang is unemployed as she needs to care for her two primary school age children as well as two grandchildren. Hope Place said the family is currently living at Jalan Astana. 'Julia's husband passed away earlier this year due to infections. She has always been a housewife and now that her husband has left them, she is taking care of four schooling children at home with no income. 'She has two children aged seven and 10 who are still schooling, besides the sole custody of two grandchildren. Her 10-year-old daughter Azarina is autistic, while one of her grandchildren has a learning disability,' said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) in a statement yesterday. Julia's adult daughter, Zamilla, who works at a food stall, is bipolar and requires regular check-ups at Sarawak General Hospital. 'At home, Julia has her hands full taking care of all the children, especially with two disabled kids, and dealing with Zamilla's condition. 'With four schooling children and Zamilla earning below the minimum pay, money is never enough. Julia is fortunate to receive RM300 monthly from the Welfare Department,' said Hope Place. Donations to support more needy families and individuals are welcome and receipts will be issued. KUCHING (May 9): Hope Place Kuching is providing basic food supplies and children's milk powder to a family in Kampung Tijirak that is struggling to make ends meet. In a statement yesterday, the charity said 75-year-old Catherine Kayeng Suter, who is partially visually impaired, lives with her daughter and three grandchildren. 'She has blurred vision and finds it difficult for her to do things or go out on her own. Despite these challenges, Catherine still manages most of the household chores. She cooks for the family, keeps the house in order, and cares for her youngest grandchild,' said Hope Place following a recent visit. Catherine's daughter, Sylvia, 39, is a single mother with three children aged between two to 14. Due to her family situation, Slyvia is unable to take on full-time employment or earn a stable income. 'The only job Sylvia can manage is collecting and selling wild vegetables. However, with just one old motorcycle, she can only travel around the village or nearby areas to sell them. On a good day, she earns around RM30,' said Hope Place. Despite living under financial constraints, Catherine expressed gratitude for the monthly RM200 welfare assistance she receives. Hope Place said it aims to reach out to more individuals and families in need. The organisation welcomes donations and will issue official receipts upon request. Hope Place extends helping hand to ailing elderly man
Hope Place representative Griffin Deng (left) during a recent visit to deliver the food aid. KUCHING (April 28): Hope Place Kuching is providing continuous food aid to a 60-year-old man facing several health issues. Kapie Galang, who lives alone at Kpg Merdang Lumut in Kota Samarahan near here, has neither income nor savings to support his daily life, said the non-governmental organisation (NGO) in a statement today. Following a recent visit, Hope Place learnt that Kapit, who used to work as a daily paid construction worker, has diabetes, high blood pressure and severe gout. 'All his joints, especially his hands and legs are very swollen. Because of this, his movements are very slow and he is in pain all the time. Due to his severe gout, Kapie takes painkillers whenever the pain is too unbearable. 'He retired from the construction sector when he was in his mid 50s. Kapie is not married and thus never thought of buying a house for himself. He has no property or any savings. 'However, Kapie is fortunate to have a caring family. His late brother had built a small shack at his property for Kapie to stay. Although his brother has passed away, his nephew looks after him from time to time,' said the NGO. The public can donate to Hope Place's Maybank account (511289001160) or via its S Pay Global QR code on its Facebook page. Receipts will be issued upon request. KUCHING (April 25): Hope Place Kuching is providing basic food aid to a needy family in Samarahan whose breadwinner has various health issues. Yeo Heng Siang, 45, is a vegetable seller with an unpredictable income and has two children, according to the non-governmental organisation (NGO) in a statement yesterday. With rent, medical bills, and school essentials, the family needs a better income,' said Hope Place.
