Photo: Supplied / Police A 73-year-old man will appear in the Kaikohe District Court on Tuesday, charged with murder following the death of a man in Northland last month. Daniel Hepehi, also known as Danny Whiston, was found with critical injuries at a property in on Waikerikeri Road in the town of Horeke. The 77-year-old victim died at the scene in the early hours of 22 May. Detective Inspector Rhys Johnston, of Northland CIB, said police were not seeking anyone else in connection with this homicide. "Police have made a number of appeals for information during this investigation and we would like to thank those members of the public for their support. "We are continuing with our enquiries and we are pleased with the progress so far."

Police have released the name of the victim, Daniel Hepehi, who was also known as Danny Whiston. The 77-year-old man was found with critical injuries at a property in Waikerikeri Road in the early hours of 22 May and later died at the scene. Detective Inspector Rhys Johnston, Northland CIB, said investigators were now appealing for sightings of Hepehi on the morning of Wednesday 21 May in Kaikohe. "Police have confirmed that Mr Hepehi shopped for groceries in Kaikohe around 10.30am on that morning. "We would like to hear from anyone who saw Mr Hepehi or interacted with him over this time to assist in the investigation. "We are aware he frequently rode long distances on his bike around Horeke, Ōkaihau and Kaikohe," Johnston said. Daniel Hepehi, who was also known as Danny Whiston. Northland Police launched homicide enquiry 'Operation Dime' after Hepehi's death. Johnston said additional police from other areas have joined the investigation. "As we have advised, we are not seeking anyone in connection with the homicide, but we are doing everything we can to find out what happened," he said. Police said a man arrived at the Kaikohe Police Station around 8.30pm on Wednesday, who led them to a property on Waikerikeri Road where they found a man with "critical injuries". "The man was provided urgent medical attention but sadly died at the scene," Detective Inspector Rhys Johnston said. The man who led them to the property was being spoken to as part of the investigation, he said. A post-mortem would be held in the coming days. "Police extend condolences to whānau for their loss," Johnston said.
