New supermarket in Hagerstown food desert brings state, local partners together
HAGERSTOWN, Md. () — On Wednesday, officials announced that a new 14,000-square-foot Horizon Goodwill supermarket is coming to Prospect Street in downtown Hagerstown. This is a part of town that has been referred to as a 'food desert.'
Maryland's Secretary of Housing and Community Development, Jake Day, was on hand for the announcement, part of a statewide neighborhood revitalization initiative, in partnership with Horizon Goodwill Industries and the University System of Maryland, Hagerstown campus.
'We'll be more than a grocery store downtown for Hagerstown,' said David Shuster, president and CEO of Horizon Goodwill Industries here. 'This is really envisioned to be a community asset, a partnership with residents here.'

'USM-H,' said Chief Mission Officer for Horizon Goodwill, Brooke Grossman, 'has a special interest in making sure their students and families have access to fresh and affordable food so it serves the community as a whole.'
'We want healthy food, affordable food for people in downtown,' added Jacob Ashby, executive director of USM-H. 'It's going to contribute to the community and the area.'
Horizon Goodwill already has fresh food markets in senior high-rises in Hagerstown. The new store will be a stand-alone just a few blocks from Public Square in the center of town.
