Suspect in Little River boat-party shooting wasn't alone, victims' attorney says

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A suspect arrested in the Little River mass shooting over the Memorial Day weekend wasn't alone the night of the incident, according to an attorney representing three of the 11 victims. Shawon Shamarion Williams, 19, was arrested Thursday in Lake County, Illinois, near Chicago. Deputy Chief Chris Covelli with the Lake County Sheriff's Office said officers arrested Williams outside the Naval Station Great Lakes. Little River shooting latest episode of high-profile crimes since March Williams signed an extradition warrant Friday morning and will be returned to Horry County to face charges in the shooting, which happened Sunday night while the Hurricane II boat was docked in the Watson Avenue area in Little River. Horry County police said on Wednesday that the event was 'isolated in nature.' Brooke Wright, an attorney representing three victims who were on the chartered party boat where the shooting occurred, said her clients saw Williams lift his shirt to reveal a firearm stashed in his waistband. She added that all of the 120 passengers, except for Williams and another male with him, received security pat-downs. 'The person who has been arrested by the police is definitely the same person that had a gun in his waistband that an eyewitness identified,' Wright said. She added that her clients and the witnesses she talked to saw Williams hand a gun to the other male. They left the area together in a vehicle after the shooting. North Myrtle Beach police say officer accidentally shot himself in leg during Little River shooting response Williams is the son of Jacklyn Bellamy, known as 'Jackie-O,' who organized the party on the Hurricane II, a boat owned by Hurricane Fleet LLC. Wright is hoping to take action against the charter boat company. 'I believe that the boat is responsible for hiring security, and they owned and controlled that boat,' Wright said. 'They had a duty to protect the people on the boat. 'They certainly had a duty to have security and to have reasonable security measures to prevent any foreseeable risk of crime, like the shooting that occurred.' News13 spoke with an attorney who represents Hurricane Fleet, who told reporters that the company hired no personnel other than the crew members required on the vessel, as per the United States Coast Guard. According to Wright, witnesses saw both Williams and the other male drinking at the party before the shooting occurred. However, the attorney, who chose to remain anonymous, said Hurricane Fleet did not provide any alcohol at the event. News13 reached out to Bellamy about her son's arrest but received no response. On Thursday, she had previously told a reporter, 'He is innocent, that's all.' * * * Shelby Martin is a multimedia journalist who joined the News13 team in May 2025. 10 people shot following altercation at South Carolina boat gathering, police say

Ten people were shot and at least one other person was injured when a holiday weekend gathering at a charter boat in a South Carolina coastal community turned violent, according to police. Some of those injured in the shooting in Little River on Sunday were in critical condition as of Monday morning, Horry County police said, without specifying how many. Detectives were trying to determine who was responsible for the shooting, police said; no names were released and no arrests were immediately announced. The shooting stemmed from an altercation during a private Memorial Day weekend gathering on a charter boat in Little River, a community of about 11,000 people situated along the Intracoastal Waterway near the North Carolina state line, police said. Police didn't say whether the shooting happened on the boat. The vessel was docked at the time of the incident, Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov said. Details about what led to the altercation weren't immediately available. Eleven people were taken to hospitals, police said. Besides the 10 who were shot, one person 'reported an unknown non-gunfire-related injury,' police said. According to The Associated Press, a flyer online advertised a party Sunday night with a DJ on a three-hour cruise ending at 9 p.m. A woman who answered a phone number on the flyer early Monday said she was distraught seeing her friends get shot, but then said she didn't want to talk further and hung up, according to the AP. Someone who answered the phone at the company that owns the boat said he didn't want to talk to a reporter, according to the AP. A North Myrtle Beach Police officer suffered a self-inflicted leg injury while responding to the Little River shooting after accidentally discharging his service weapon, the department's public information officer Patrick Wilkinson told CNN. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident. The officer was transported to the hospital Sunday night and remains in stable condition as of Monday afternoon, Wilkinson said. Little River is roughly 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Memorial Day weekend shooting leaves 11 injured at North Myrtle Beach marina as police hunt suspects

South Carolina authorities continue to search for the suspect or suspects who carried out a mass shooting that left 11 people injured on Sunday evening in North Myrtle Beach. The Horry County Police Department described the shooting as an isolated incident stemming from an altercation on a charter boat during a private Memorial Day gathering. A total of 10 victims sustained gunshot wounds and another person reported an unknown injury not related to gunfire, the police department said in a Monday press release. Some victims were recovered from the water, the North Myrtle Beach Police Department (NMBPD) said. "Of those, the worst of the injured are in critical but stable condition at area hospitals," Horry County police said in a press release. Videos and photos posted to social media on Sunday evening showed a heavy police presence in the area of Harbourgate Marina, a popular spot for local boat owners and tourists going on charter boat trips. NMBPD also said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating a separate incident involving a responding North Myrtle Beach officer who was injured with his own firearm. "A NMBPD Officer was entering a gate to the dock when his rifle discharged twice, with one of the rounds striking his leg," the department said in its press release. "At the time of the discharge, the Officer had both of his hands on the gate, which was confirmed by later video evidence. Due to the Officer not attempting to utilize his weapon at the time, all Officers on scene believed that shots were being fired from the marina area." The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Video footage obtained from a witness apparently shows the incident, and authorities determined that "the discharge was from the wounded Officer's rifle," and the scene was released to SLED. Horry County police said the shooting remains under investigation, and "there is currently no associated risk to the community." Crime concerns in and around Myrtle Beach have been heightened since April 26, when a shooting in the Myrtle Beach entertainment district left the shooter dead and 11 victims injured. Myrtle Beach officials described the shooting as an isolated incident at the time.
