33 Brilliant Life Hacks Everyone Should Be Using
Reddit user Extra_Gear7502 asked, "What's your 'I can't believe other people don't know this' hack?" Fellow Redditors really came through with their handy hacks and everyday tips. Here's what they shared: "Percentages are reversible. You might not be able to figure out 3% of 25 in your head, but it's quite easy to calculate 25% of 3. The answer is 0.75 in both cases." "Fill your thermos with hot water and let it sit for five minutes before adding your hot drinks (dump the hot water out before adding the drink). Those things burn your mouth eight hours later." "I have really sensitive ears. Most earrings irritate them, except ones made from titanium. So I got 14g implant-grade titanium tunnels and just put the cheap earrings through them like a sleeve. It works great, and now I can wear whatever earrings I want without having any reaction. Highly recommend for folks with sensitive ears!" "When purchasing citrus fruit, select the heavy ones. They are more likely to be fresh and juicy than the lighter ones (assuming the same variety and similar size)." "Use a seam ripper to clean your vacuum brush roll! Makes a heinous chore take less than a minute. Also, clean your damn cleaning tools. It makes such a huge difference." "When a bar of soap is down to a sliver, wet a new bar and lay the sliver on top of it. In time, they'll merge together to make a single bar. That way, you don't have to throw away perfectly good soap." "Chemical hot packs (like Hot Hands hand warmers or Thermacare heat patches) are rated for a specific number of hours of heat. I believe the hand warmers are 10 hours, and the larger Thermacare patches are 16. The way these packs work is by a chemical reaction with oxygen. Which means you get 10 hours of heat for 10 hours of oxygen exposure, but they don't have to be 10 consecutive hours. If you only need them for a few hours, stick them in a Ziploc bag when you're done. They will cool off almost instantly, and you still get several more hours of heat. You don't have to throw them away just because you don't need them right now." "Baby powder removes sand. I continue to blow people's minds with this every single summer at the beach, and my mind is equally blown at how no one seems to know this." "Dental tablets — like the ones that dissolve to clean dentures — clean out water bottles incredibly well. They can also be super lightweight to carry while camping/hiking/traveling. I put all my friends on to this hack!" "Open jars with your left hand. The direction and thumb position are the trick. When you open a jar with your right hand, you use your fingers, which fold over, and you're missing out on the rigidity of your thumb bones." "Wrap a wet paper towel around your bottle and put it in the freezer. It'll chill in about 15 minutes." "If you're a side sleeper and wake up with hip or back pain, try to sleep with a thin pillow or a folded-up blanket between your legs. Keeps your femurs and your pelvis straight and puts less pressure on your joints." "Set up a keyboard shortcut to make '@@' autocorrect to your email." "Use a slightly damp paper towel to cover food when you microwave it. Prevents it from getting dry and retains more flavor." "If your brown sugar gets hard and unusable, seal it in a Ziploc bag overnight with a slice of apple or bread. The sugar will absorb the moisture from the slice and be as good as new." "The number of people unaware that running a slow stream of water while cutting onions eliminates the whole eyes getting tears thing is pretty shocking. I've heard of other methods, but this is the easiest way to deal with it in my experience." "Rocking back and forth on the toilet will move things along quicker if you're struggling." "I roll instead of folding my towels; they stack better, come out more easily, and fit better in the cupboard." "If you press and hold the spacebar on your phone keyboard, it turns into a trackpad so you can move the cursor around. I've watched grown adults lose their minds when they learn this." "Use a pistachio shell to open the pistachios that only have a little gap in them instead of ruining your fingernails." "Ctrl + shift + T opens up the last closed tab in your browser." "When cooking, I use a scrap bowl instead of constantly running to the trash. It saves so much time and is super helpful for my ADHD brain to not get distracted." "Not really a hack, but library branches often have digital libraries where you can view pretty recent movies and TV shows for free from the comfort of your home or wherever. Access will vary from one branch to another. It's either via a specific website/app unique to the branch. But some branches work with the Hoopla app, offering the same access. Though note you may need an active library card to access the digital library." "Paper towel in your mixed greens box. It increases shelf life by weeks." "When opening a new deodorant, don't try to pull the inner cap off; instead, twist the bottom to raise the deodorant and push the seal out." "Spank watermelons to see how ripe they are; if it sounds hollow, it's likely ripe." "When buying bagged salad, buy the bags that aren't puffed up. Look for the flattest bags. They are the freshest ones. When the salad starts to go bad, it makes the bag inflate." "When putting a fitted sheet onto your bed, do it diagonally, that way those two corners will hold the sheet on while you do the other two. It makes it a breeze when you're doing it by yourself." "Put a slice of bread in the same container as your brownies or home-baked cookies. The bread keeps them soft." "If your bell peppers get wrinkly, just put them in cold water for a couple of hours and they'll perk right up." "If you've sliced garlic, rubbing your hands/fingers in the bottom of a metal sink removes the smell from your skin." "To test if batteries still have charge, drop them on a hard surface from an inch or two up. If they bounce, they're dead; if they land solid, they're good." And: "When reheating a slice of pizza in the microwave (if you must), put a glass of water in with it and heat for longer than you would with the slice alone (like one minute maybe). The water absorbs some of the microwaves, allowing the pizza to heat up more slowly. Better tasting than a direct nuke's goo crust and lava cheese." Promising review: "I bought this scarf for my elderly mother, who is always cold on her neighborhood walks. She absolutely loves it! It's really soft and warm. I can speak from experience when I say once one person gets it, the whole friend group wants to get on board. TBH, it is the warmest, most functional coat I've ever owned. It's like being snuggled everywhere you go?? A gift that will just keep on giving and giving. Also the POCKETS ON THIS THING. I genuinely feel like a one-woman clown car pulling out all the things I've snuck in there. I don't use a purse in the winter, everything just very snugly and securely fits in one of the zippered pockets (and the side pockets are SO warm for your hands). Promising review:"I ordered this for my Scotland winter trip after seeing it on TikTok and I have to say it lived up to the hype. It kept me toasty warm and dry. Plus, I LOVED all of the many pockets!! I was able to carry my phone, a charging brick, hat, gloves, cell phone and credit cards/money with room to spare. It's also really easy to adjust the fit with the side zippers and snaps on the front. One of the best buys I've ever made on Amazon!!" — Staci B Get it from Amazon for $125.99 (available in women's sizes XXS–5XL and 12 colors). 6. Promising review: "I bought this scarf for my elderly mother, who is always cold on her neighborhood walks. She absolutely loves it! It's really soft and warm. The pull-through stays secure and has good stitching on the hole. The scarf is a good length and not overly bulky. The grey is a pretty color. ( I'm thinking of buying one for myself!) Thanks for making a little old lady happy for Christmas!" — sprucehen Get it from Amazon for $17.92 (available in 20 colors). 10. A pair of chic wireless headband headphones to keep your ears toasty warm listening to music during outdoor workouts or long walks. Promising reviews: "This is a great product for running outdoors or hiking! In some circumstances, ears can get cold very quickly and cause ear pain or ringing outdoors. The cloth lining here has been very helpful in reducing these side-effects. The band is also more comfortable than earbuds for casual listening in my opinion. Sound leaks through at loud volumes so it is best used in a casual setting or outdoors. The band is very easy to clean in the washing machine." — LL "TikTok made me buy it! I've been using Bluetooth headphones and switching every time I turn over. This thing is amazing! Worth every penny. Easy to connect and the charging port hides in a slit in the fabric and you can't feel it at all. I kind of thought the headphones would be less conspicuous or padded around them, but they weren't uncomfortable and I had no issues." — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $19.99 (available in nine colors). 11. An electric heated mattress pad that might be just proof that humans CAN biologically hibernate?? Because it would simply take too much effort to ever leave something so perfectly toasty again. It comes with timed auto-shutoffs and 10 heat settings, with dual controls for the queen and king sizes so two people can each set the temp *just* to their liking. Promising review: "We live in Wisconsin where it gets very cold at night. We like to crack the bedroom windows open at night because we prefer a cold room to sleep in. But this makes getting in bed with freezing cold sheets brutal. Not anymore! This mattress pad is a game changer! Turning the mattress pad on before getting in bed makes all the difference in the world; no more freezing cold sheets. The dual controls are great since I like my side warmer than my husband does his side. The mattress pad is soft and comfortable; you cannot feel the wires at all. It has nice deep pockets that fit on our mattress and memory foam pad very nicely." — Linda Stranzl Get it from Amazon for $69.95+ (available in sizes Twin–California King). 12. Promising review:"We had a ballgame today where it was 30 degrees, one minute it was raining then it would turn to snow. While everyone else was freezing cold I was warm and toasty — I only had a long sleeve shirt and yoga pants on while everyone else was layered up. I had extra stuff with me but it put in the floor of the pod 'cause I was so warm. Others had three or four blankets on top of their layers of clothes. Days were about 40 degrees and evenings were about 30 degrees, and all I had on my feet were these socks and some non-insulated hiking boots. It got down to 19 degrees the first night and despite only having a 40-degree rating on my sleeping bag, my feet stayed warm all night long." — Dan C. Get it from Amazon for $18.66+ (available in men's sizes 5–15 and seven colors). 20. A pair of trendy, affordable boots that not only keep your feet absurdly warm, but actually deliver on traction — these anti-slip soles have made me, a certifiable Clumsy Individual, feel a lot more steady on my feet walking in the snow and icy pavement. Amazon, Emma Lord/BuzzFeed I only got these a few years ago because it was a Black Friday sale, but now that I've worn them I would have paid full price and then some. They're ridiculously comfortable, keep my feet warm and dry, and I felt very secure walking in them on a day with fresh snow and the day after, when the sidewalks were icy. There was no break-in period, either, which I appreciate because I tend to go on long walks. There are no half sizes and some reviewers suggested leaning toward your lower size if you're usually a half — this was true for me! They run a smidge large. Promising review: "I purchased these to wear while walking my dog 1+ miles daily, and wanted to feel safe walking in the snow and ice. The anti slip tread on these boots did not disappoint. The top and sides remain cool while the device is on. I sit directly in front of the heater, and I'm not too hot or too cool; it's perfect. (FWIW, people also use this to keep their curious cats out of the shower 😭.) Amazon Promising review:"We live in a small apartment that is a converted attic space. As such we have slanted ceilings throughout different spaces. I was losing precious steamy warm air out this giant gap.
