Was Outlook down? Why Microsoft 365 products went offline briefly

Microsoft 365 products including Outlook and OneDrive appeared offline on Saturday afternoon, according to the tech company, but services were beginning to slowly return to normal after a fix to a suspected broken code. Downdetector, operated by data analysts Ookla, detailed an uptick of more than 25,000 reports that Microsoft 365 and its products were offline starting about 2 p.m. Arizona time. Just after 2:30 p.m., Microsoft said it was "investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services," in a post on social platform X. The account followed up with a post saying the issue was impacting various Microsoft 365 services, without providing an estimated time the issue would be fixed. But as of 2:45 p.m., Microsoft's webpage dedicated to service health initially did not report any issues across products like Outlook and OneDrive. Microsoft then said on X that a fix was imminent after the company "reverted the suspected code" to fix the outage. The website was updated to reflect a status message that Microsoft 365 products made for a consumer audience were impacted, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, email server and calendar service About 4 p.m., the tech company announced that affected products were returning "to a healthy state," and added an additional update would arrive about 6 p.m., according to the service health page. "We've entered a period of extended monitoring to ensure that the service remains stable, and to address any outstanding impact to other Microsoft 365 services," stated the tech company. About the same time, Downdetector also showed a significant drop in reports of Microsoft 365 products as offline. (This story was updated to add new information.)
