GOP rails against 'blatantly false' Dem claims about Medicaid reform in Trump's 'big, beautiful bill'
House Republicans are celebrating Medicaid reform in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which the House GOP says eliminates waste, fraud and abuse to deliver for Americans who need coverage most. Meanwhile, Democrats have railed against possible Medicaid cuts since President Donald Trump was elected in November. Now that his "big, beautiful bill" has passed in the House of Representatives, Democrats are defining Medicaid cuts as a driving issue ahead of competitive midterm elections in 2026. Republicans say there is more to the story. "The One, Big Beautiful Bill puts Americans first. We're securing the border. We're protecting benefits for the most vulnerable. We are investing in American manufacturing. We're investing in our own energy production," Rep. Erin Houchin, R-Ind., told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview. "The Democrats have been focusing on this specific line of attack that 13.7 million Americans are going to lose their health care, and that's just blatantly false." Democrats Predict Passing Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' Will Cost Many Republicans Their Seats Read On The Fox News App The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan analysis for the U.S. Congress, estimates that 8.6 million people in the United States will lose health insurance by 2034 through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's Medicaid reform. "Five million of those people are receiving a tax credit under the Affordable Care Act that was passed by the Democrats with a sunset date that was implemented by the Democrats. We're simply allowing the sunset date to expire as the Democrats originally intended," Houchin said. Dems Warn House Republicans Will Pay Price At Ballot Box For Passing Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' CBO estimates that 13.7 million Americans will lose coverage by 2034, which also includes the 5 million Americans who were already set to lose coverage. A number of Democrats have already deployed the figure in campaign messages rejecting Trump's "big, beautiful bill" passing in the House. "I don't trust the CBO score, nor should the American people, because it's been proven again and again to be wildly off," added Houchin, who served on three major committees leading budget markup, including the House Rules, Budget and Energy and Commerce committees. The American Accountability Foundation, a conservative government research nonprofit, found that of the 32 staff members on CBO's Health Analysis Division, 26 of them have "clearly" verified liberal partisan biases, as a Democrat donor, registered Democrat or a Democratic primary voter, as Fox News Digital reported this month. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act does not cut Medicaid for the most vulnerable, according to Houchin. Instead, she says targeting waste, fraud and abuse in the Medicaid program cuts benefits to illegal immigrants, those ineligible to receive benefits who are currently receiving benefits, duplicate enrollees in one or more states and those who are able-bodied but are choosing not to work. "If you have to think about the four things that we're doing in Medicaid to strengthen it, we're removing anybody that is illegal, ineligible or duplicate, and we're ensuring that able-bodied adults, on the expansion population, have a very modest work requirement, in exchange for receiving benefits. Those things are overwhelmingly supported by the American people, yet the Democrats continue to lie about what this bill is actually doing," Houchin said. Republicans say they are cleaning up the program to ensure working families and the most vulnerable Americans can rely on the program for generations to come. "What we're trying to do is protect precious Medicaid dollars for those who need it most," Houchin said. "That's what we're doing. No one in the traditional Medicaid population needs to worry. And even if you're in the able-body expansion population, there are many opportunities to comply to participate in Medicaid." However, Democrats have already designated Medicaid cuts as a defining issue in 2026. "House Republicans' giant tax scam will kick millions of people off their health insurance," Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) spokesperson Viet Shelton told Fox News Digital. "It is fact. Independent analysts say it. Health care professionals say it. Hell, even Republican senators say so. Their saying anything to the contrary is just them trying to protect their already in danger majority." After weeks of negotiating through budget reconciliation, House Republicans finally reached a consensus and passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act last week. The bill passed just 215 to 214, and all Democrats voted against it. Republicans' slim majority managed to deliver a legislative win for Trump. However, the "big, beautiful" fight is far from over as the Senate is tasked with drafting their own version of the bill. Senate Republicans have indicated they do not support the bill in its current form. "I don't want to see rural hospitals close their doors because funding got cut. I also don't like the idea of a hidden tax on the working poor. That's why I'm a NO on this House bill in its current form," Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said. The sweeping, multitrillion-dollar legislation advances Trump's agenda on taxes, immigration, energy, defense and the national debt. The bill includes Trump's key campaign promises, including no tax on tips and overtime, and it seeks to permanently extend his 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. "By passing the largest cut to Medicaid in history, Republicans are ripping away health care from millions of Americans and levying a de facto hidden tax on working-class families," DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene said in a statement after the bill passed. "Now that vulnerable Republicans are on the record voting for it, this betrayal of the American people will cost them their jobs in the midterms and Republicans the House Majority come 2026." While Democrats target vulnerable Republicans for supporting Medicaid reform in Trump's "big, beautiful bill," Republicans are taking aim at Democrats for voting against the bill's tax cuts. "House Democrats voted for the largest tax increase in generations while giving taxpayer-funded freebies to illegal immigrants. The NRCC will make sure voters don't forget how they betrayed working families," National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) spokesman Mike Marinella said in a statement to Fox News Digital. As House members return to their home states and communicate with constituents during the congressional recess, the NRCC is encouraging House Republicans to go on the offense on Medicaid reform. "We're encouraging all of our caucus, our conference members to continue to communicate with the local and national media to reiterate what we know to be true about this One Big Beautiful Bill," Houchin said. "It puts Americans first and will ensure that these programs will be around for the next generation, because we're not wasting any tax dollars, any precious benefits on people who are illegal, ineligible, enrolled in multiple states or are able-bodied and could be working. These programs were designed for our most vulnerable Americans, and the One Big Beautiful Bill protects benefits for those people." Fox News Digital's Elizabeth Elkind and Louis Casiano contributed to this report. GOP lawmaker touts $19M Trump tariff success story in her district: 'New model for American manufacturing'
FIRST ON FOX: An Indiana lawmaker is celebrating an American bicycle company opening a new manufacturing plant in her district after President Donald Trump launched his aggressive tariff campaign against China. Rep. Erin Houchin, R-Ind., told Fox News Digital that Guardian Bikes is starting with a new $19 million investment in Seymour, Indiana to expand their operations there – which she said will create new local jobs. "The number of job opportunities that are available, the investment right here in southern Indiana, that's money that's staying right here at home and not going outside the country. And certainly away from China," Houchin said in her first interview on the topic. Trump Shreds Biden, 'Radical Left Lunatics' In Easter Message The Indiana Republican, now in her second term, said she first visited Guardian Bikes shortly after being elected to Congress. At the time, they had just 16 employees, she said. "At the time, they talked to us about their desire to become a 100% made in the USA bicycle factory," Houchin said. "Currently, over 97% of bicycles are made outside of the United States. Many are assembled in the United States, but their component parts mostly come from China." Read On The Fox News App Guardian Bikes specifically relied on Chinese imports for 70% of its production, she said. After Trump's election in November 2024, however, she said "they have been slowly working toward being 100% made in the USA." "They just announced $19 million in financing with JPMorgan Chase to launch the first large-scale bicycle frame manufacturing operation in the United States," Houchin said. "This has been made possible by President Trump's trade policies…it's just pretty incredible that we have a president right now that is focused so much…on creating a level playing field for American companies." Houchin said the company is aiming to increase its "mass market" bicycles manufactured in the U.S. from 100,000 to over 1 million. "That's just very, very exciting," she said. Guardian Bikes also currently has locations in California and Pennsylvania, with two more expected in Texas and Georgia this year, according to the company's website. The site also touts the company's plans to manufacture its bike frames in Indiana, and vows to be "rapidly" moving toward being made entirely within the United States. "We brought Guardian Bikes production to the U.S., because we believe the future of manufacturing is local, fast, and data-driven. Indiana, and specifically Seymour, offers the perfect combination of workforce, infrastructure, and proximity to our customer base," Guardian Bikes CEO Brian Riley told Fox News Digital. "It's not just about making bikes – it's about building a new model for American manufacturing." What The Financial Markets Are Screaming About Trump's Tariffs It comes as critics of Trump's sweeping tariff plans have accused him of upending the global economy. Supporters of the plan, however, have hailed it as both a potent negotiating strategy and a long-needed solution to jobs moving overseas. A cornerstone of Trump's policy has been a 10% tariff on all imports to the U.S. Plans for additional reciprocal tariffs, which Trump announced earlier this month, were dropped against countries that have not retaliated against the U.S. However, Trump has levied a massive 145% base tariff across all of Beijing's exports in a bid to crack down on the U.S.'s growing reliance on Chinese manufacturing. When reached for comment by Fox News Digital, White House spokesman Kush Desai told Fox News Digital, "Trillions in historic investment commitments from industry leaders – now including Guardian Bikes – since Election Day only reinforces what President Trump has been saying all along: if you make your product in America, you don't have to worry about tariffs."Original article source: GOP lawmaker touts $19M Trump tariff success story in her district: 'New model for American manufacturing'

Haylie Houchin's voice lifts semistate-bound Highland. The senior center ‘holds us all together as a family.'
It was quite a twist when Highland senior center Haylie Houchin emerged from the regional championship game with a scratchy voice. Highland girls basketball coach Eric Kundich, who describes the 5-foot-11 Houchin as a vocal leader, noted practice was unusually quiet this week. 'Sorry, my voice is gone from screaming on Saturday,' Houchin said with a wide smile. And why not? Houchin and the Trojans had much to celebrate after they toppled Culver Academies to win their first regional title since 2003. Highland (15-10) advanced to the semifinals of the Class 3A Huntington North Semistate and will play Columbia City (23-4), which defeated Highland's Northwest Crossroads Conference rival Lowell in a regional. Houchin's contributions to that success extend well beyond the 1.4 points and 2.6 rebounds she averages. Part of two sectional championship teams in three seasons, Houchin is a co-captain with star junior guard/forward Jordan Steele, who ranks fourth in the state in scoring with 26.2 points per game, according to MaxPreps. 'I'm always very vocal on the court,' Houchin said. 'Maddy Greiner is too. We make sure that practice is always going good. Even if someone is down, we're always the ones yelling and making sure we're getting on one another but also lifting each other up. We always want to make sure there's that positive atmosphere.' Kundich said Houchin accomplishes that in more ways than one. 'Haylie understands her role on the team,' Kundich said. 'She leads, first and foremost, and she does the little things on the court like play solid paint defense, box out, set screens for our guards, relieve pressure when our guards get into trouble. 'She is a glue kid that holds us all together as a family, and family is probably our strongest attribute as a team. We do a lot of things off the court to develop chemistry, and Haylie organizes and leads these events.' Along those lines, Steele said Houchin is 'like the mother of our team.' 'I talk to her a lot about what we can do at practice, team bonding stuff, and just how to make the team closer,' Steele said. 'On the court or on the bench, no matter where she is, she'll always be up. She will never get down on any of us.' Houchin embraces her role as a unifying and uplifting presence. 'I'm able to keep everybody together,' she said. 'There hasn't been any drama. Just being able to have everyone's back and be that person for literally any of my other teammates to come and talk to me if there is a problem to clear up or if they're happy about something and just want to talk about it — me being that shoulder to lean on for my teammates has been my main thing.' Houchin has built up those relationships over the course of several years. She and senior guard/forward Alyssa Niemann, senior guard/forward Maddy Greiner and senior forward/center Mya Simmons have played together since they were 5 years old in town ball. They all attended Southridge Elementary School and Highland Middle School. 'Alyssa, Mya and Maddy are literally my best friends,' Houchin said. So Houchin had a sense of what this group might be capable of accomplishing. 'I feel really confident in my team,' she said. 'This is the closest team I've ever had. We really are like a family. I've been playing with these girls since we were little, especially the three other seniors. Us having that connection as a family, we've brought that to our senior year and given it to the underclassmen. 'I definitely had confidence in us. I knew it was going to be a tough game (against Culver Academies). But it just felt amazing that it paid off and everything worked. It's insane. It's unreal. It's been a super cool experience.' Kundich, who is in his first season at Highland after 15 seasons at East Chicago Central, also took over the girls golf team. He said the first player he contacted was Houchin, Highland's No. 1 golfer and the captain of that team in the fall. Houchin also is a thrower in track and field. She won a sectional title in the discus last spring. Her bond with Kundich, who won one sectional title with the Cardinals and notched his first regional title as a coach with the Trojans, has continued to grow. 'In the summer, when we first met, I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, there's this new person coming in senior year. I don't know how it's going to go,'' Houchin said. 'But I had the opportunity to have him as a coach for golf, as well, so it was really cool to get to see him through that side and get to know him. So I had the great opportunity to help the other girls get to know him and be like, 'He's not a scary guy. You don't have to worry the first day.' 'He's a great coach to talk to. He's hard on us, but we know that he loves us and cares about us.' Away from the court, Houchin is class president, president of the Key Club and a member of the athletic leadership committee, which opens the door to participate in Indiana High School Athletic Association leadership conferences. Houchin is also one of six recipients of the prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Lake County. With full tuition covered for four years, she plans to attend Purdue and become a pharmacist. But before Houchin does that, she has more basketball to play. 'I'm just so happy with how the season has gone so far, and I'm so happy to get to hang out with my friends, continuing to play basketball this week,' she said. 'I wouldn't be here without my teammates. 'Being able to be with my fellow seniors and being able to experience this and have this opportunity, it's something I never thought in a million years I would have. So I'm grateful to have it. To be able to have our last season, this big hurrah, to really just make a statement, has been super cool.'
