Beaufort program to highlight businesses serving genuine, local or American-harvested seafood

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) — Have you ever sat down at a restaurant and wondered if the seafood you planned to order came directly from local waters? That's the goal of a new program that will soon hit tables in Beaufort. The 'Only from Our Waters' program will highlight businesses in the area that serve genuine, local or American-harvested seafood. 'We developed this program to honor them, also create economic activity and hone in on that local flavor,' said Ashlee Houck, the President and CEO of the Beaufort Area Hospitality Association (BAHA). 'Beaufort is known for its shrimp, It's oysters, crabs and the local seafood here.' Craig Reaves, the owner of Sea Eagle Market, and a large seafood distributor to several local restaurants and businesses in the area, said this program would help boost his business. He's been involved in the creation and process of the program. 'It's great that they're (BAHA) concerned for the long-term vision of the seafood industry, and specifically the shrimping industry,' Reaves said. Many shrimpers have said that around 60% of seafood eaten in the United States is imported from overseas. Reaves said that hurts small family-owned businesses who are working hard to provide fresh seafood to locals and businesses. 'Good seafood ain't cheap and cheap seafood ain't good,' said Reaves. Reaves said that many coastal restaurants talk about working with the local industry, but don't put words into action. 'There's a lot of attention on imported shrimp and how much fraud in restaurants that are claiming local but using imported Seafoods,' Reaves said. Nick Borreggine, the owner of Scratch Italian restaurant and Shellring Ale Works, said he's been involved with the process and creation of the program alongside Reaves and Houck. 'We want to support our friends and colleagues and our local seafood fishermen, shrimpers in this case. They are our neighbors. They provide a quality of life that is unmatched here.' He said this program matters because the fresh seafood caught and served locally, is a representation of what Beaufort has to offer. 'The Indonesian farm raised shrimp that that is pumped full of antibiotics is not the same quality, so if a tourist comes into town has some of those shrimps, they're going to walk away from Beaufort and say, 'I don't see what's so special about this,'' said Borreggine. 'That's not what we want. We want to put our best foot forward. A rising tide helps all boats. In this case, it's our local shrimpers.' The program will place a logo on a menu or door fronts of restaurants and businesses. That will prove if they are serving genuine local, or American-harvested seafood. 'Our consumers want local shrimp. So not only is it our responsibility to give them that, but it's truth in advertising. We want to make sure that it is local shrimp,' said Borreggine. Houck said the goal is to not only support shrimpers, but Beaufort's overall economy. People want to support local fishermen. They want to support American caught seafood. It's really important and vital to America because a lot of the areas within our community have been built upon local seafood,' said Houck. 'Destin, Florida is one of them. The Maine harbor. You know, so many various areas were built on being a fishing town. So, there is definitely a piece of those gears that make our economy run.' As of now, the plan for the program is to start with just shrimp, and then eventually branch out to other local seafood caught in local or American waters. They said the hope is to have the program fully rolled out and on menus by October of this year, just in time for Beaufort's annual Shrimp Festival. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Tanner Houck (8.04 ERA) hits injured list; Red Sox call it ‘right flexor pronator strain'

DETROIT — Following another blow-up start that raised questions about Tanner Houck's immediate future in the Red Sox' rotation, the club has found a way to unplug him for the big league roster for the time being. Houck was was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 13) on Wednesday with a 'right flexor pronator strain,' according to the team. Cooper Criswell was recalled in Houck's place and is active for Wednesday's series finale. Advertisement Houck allowed 11 earned runs in 2 ⅓ innings in Monday's series opener against the Tigers, marking the second time in a four-week period he had accomplished that ugly feat. As of earlier Wednesday afternoon, manager Alex Cora was insisting that Houck — who said Monday night that there was nothing physically wrong — would make his start Sunday as scheduled. That will no longer happen. Houck, a 2024 All-Star who logged a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts last year, struggled during spring training and got off to an uneven start in the regular season before his first disastrous outing in Tampa on April 14. In that start, he allowed 12 runs (11 earned) while being tagged for 10 hits in a 16-1 blowout loss to Tampa. He settled down — to the tune of a 3.57 ERA — over his next four outings (including two good ones against Toronto) but hit the wall again Monday, being chased after allowing 11 runs and nine hits while recording just seven outs. 'Probably the most lost I've ever been,' Houck said after the game. 'I'm just not getting the job done, which weighs on me heavily.' The last two days have brought plenty of conversations between Houck, pitching coach Andrew Bailey and his assistants and manager Alex Cora about how to get Houck right. Cora repeatedly said Houck was expected to start Sunday at home against Atlanta but kept the window open for a roster move, too. Advertisement 'I was in a meeting today and there was a lot of stuff,' acknowledged Cora on Tuesday. 'A lot. Against lefties, against righties. Throwing strikes, the delivery. 'We've just got to keep working with him. I think location with the off-speed stuff is important... I think it's location. When location has been good, he has been good. When he has struggled, especially with the off-speed pitches going to the places we need to, he has been getting hit.' It's unclear if Criswell, who has been pitching out of the rotation in Worcester, will assume Houck's turn in the rotation Sunday. The right-hander made the Opening Day roster and struggled to a 10.38 ERA (5 earned runs in 4 ⅓ innings) in the first 10 games of the season before being optioned to Triple-A. In Worcester, he has delivered a 1.99 ERA while striking out 31 batters in 22 ⅔ innings over five games (four starts). He last pitched Thursday, lasting 5 ⅔ innings at Lehigh Valley. Garrett Crochet and Lucas Giolito will start the first two games of Boston's home series against Atlanta. Sunday remains open but Brayan Bello, who started Tuesday, is a candidate to pitch on regular rest, as is Criswell, who will likely be available out of the bullpen Wednesday. Rookie Hunter Dobbins appears likely to stick in the starting five for now. And Walker Buehler, who has been out since late April with right shoulder bursitis, is expected to be activated for the club's series against the Mets, which begins Monday. Advertisement 'Buehler is throwing an up-and-down (two-inning bullpen) tomorrow,' Cora said. 'We'll see how he comes out.' More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.

Red Sox Expected to Make Decision on Tanner Houck With Questionable Future

Tanner Houck's struggles reached a new low on Monday night, as the Red Sox right-hander allowed 11 earned runs in just 2.1 innings during a 14-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers. This disastrous outing mirrors a similar performance from just four weeks ago, when Houck surrendered 11 earned runs in a blowout loss to Tampa Bay. His ERA now stands at an alarming 8.04 through his first nine starts of the 2025 season. 'I'm just not getting the job done, which weighs on me heavily,' said Houck after the game, reflecting on his disappointing performance. Despite feeling physically fine, he acknowledged his struggles with fastball command and keeping his pitches in the zone, allowing the Tigers to hit five balls over 100 mph. Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Tanner Houck (89) leaves the game against the Tampa Bay Rays in the third inning at George M. Steinbrenner Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Red Sox manager Alex Cora stated that the team would 'take a look at it' before deciding Houck's next step. With Walker Buehler expected to return from the injured list soon and other pitching options emerging, including rookie Hunter Dobbins and the recovering Richard Fitts, the Red Sox are at a crossroads with Houck's future in the rotation. Advertisement Houck, who was an All-Star in 2024, had high expectations entering 2025 but has failed to deliver. His struggles, which include just two swing-and-misses on Monday, have raised questions about his place in the rotation moving forward. With the Red Sox facing a pivotal moment in their season, Houck's next few outings could determine whether he remains in the rotation or if the team seeks other options to fill his spot. Red Sox place struggling Houck on IL, Cooper Criswell takes his spot

The 2025 season has not been kind to Boston Red Sox starter Tanner Houck. After Houck's latest blowup against the Detroit Tigers, an outing which saw him allow 11 earned runs on nine hits and two home runs over two and 1/3 innings, he has received perhaps his most discouraging news so far. Advertisement Here is the latest on Houck, according to Chris Cotillo of Mass Live: Houck has mostly been a durable pitcher in his six-year MLB career, and this move is sure to generate 'phantom IL' discussions among the Boston fan base. However, assuming this is a valid injury and not a mental refresher for Houck, it comes at a convenient time. Houck has been abysmal with an 8.04 ERA, a 6.13 FIP, an American League-leading 57 hits allowed, and a Major League-leading 39 runs allowed. Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck (89) pitches in the first inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Osentoski-Imagn Images It has been a disappointing development for the 28-year-old, who was expected to take another leap after an impressive 2024 effort that earned him his first All-Star Game appearance. Advertisement Hopefully for the Red Sox, Houck can get healthy and rediscover his stuff and his confidence in the coming weeks. His replacement, Criswell, has not been particularly impressive in his three MLB games this year, either. He has a 10.38 ERA, a 6.80 FIP, and has not yet recorded a strikeout. He has been excellent for Triple-A Worcester, though, with a 1.99 ERA and 31 strikeouts to seven walks over 22 and 2/3 innings. Boston still has a talented staff, namely because of ace Garrett Crochet, but Houck's IL visit marks another chapter in what has already been a tumultuous ride for this staff's availability. Red Sox place starter Tanner Houck (forearm) on 15-day injured list

May 14 - The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Tanner Houck on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday because of a right flexor pronator strain. The move is retroactive to Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Cooper Criswell from Triple-A Worcester. Houck yielded 11 runs, nine hits (including two home runs) and three walks in 2 1/3 innings Monday night in a 14-2 loss at Detroit. "This is definitely probably the most lost I've ever been," Houck, 28, said after the game. "And just not getting the job done, which weighs on me heavily." Asked about his health, Houck said, "Physically, I feel good," and added, "I just need to be better." Houck is 0-3 with an 8.04 ERA, 17 walks, 32 strikeouts, an America League-high 57 hits allowed and a major league-worst 39 earned runs in 43 2/3 innings over nine starts this season. An All-Star in 2024, Houck owns a career 24-32 record with nine saves, a 3.97 ERA, 158 walks and 449 strikeouts in 474 1/3 innings over 113 regular-season games (80 starts) since 2020. The Red Sox selected Houck 24th overall in the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of Missouri. Criswell, 28, is 0-0 with one save, a 10.38 ERA, one walk and no strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings over three relief appearances this season. For his career, he is 7-7 with one save, a 4.78 ERA, 44 walks and 104 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings over 41 games (20 starts) for the Los Angeles Angels (2021), Tampa Bay Rays (2022-23) and Red Sox (2024-present). --Field Level Media
