Greenville Museum of Art celebrates black artists in new exhibit
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — In celebration of Black History Month, the Greenville Museum of Art is showcasing talent from black artists across the state.
The museum's current exhibition is titled, 'How We Got Over'. Artist Zachariah Sage and seven other black artists from the triangle joined forces and curated art that responds to the black art that has been a part of the museum's permanent collection since November.
'I think artists are able to shed kind of a specific light and draw attention to different aspects of history and of black history, especially in our community or even just in North Carolina and more broadly. So reflecting on very specific, unique experiences for black artists in conjunction with this kind of idea of like we're acknowledging history, what else are we acknowledging about the present day' said Trista Reis Porter, Executive Director of the Greenville Museum of Art.
Black History Month is celebrated year-round through the museum's permanent exhibition as a way to continue filling the gaps that have lasted decades. There is also a reception being held Friday evening to celebrate the new exhibition opening it's doors to the community.
