China pop idol live-streams sale of own sanitary pad brand, earns US$3 million in half an hour
Chinese billionaire heir Huang Zitao has live-streamed the sale of his own sanitary pad brand in a bid to rebuild trust after recent product safety scandals rocked the country. Advertisement The 32-year-old pop star and actor from Shandong province in eastern China trained in South Korea and inherited an estimated US$3 billion after his father, one of China's richest men, passed away in 2020. Known for his outspoken personality and love for his wife, singer Xu Yiyang, Huang has gained more than 66 million followers on mainland social media. In March, several Chinese sanitary pad factories were exposed for repackaging and reselling used pads and baby nappies at inflated prices. Huang Zitao says his team has invested US$40 million to build the sanitary pad brand which is promoted and sold during live streams. Huang Zitao successfully launches his sanitary napkins business
21 May - Huang Zitao has successfully sold 195,000 pieces of his sanitary napkins in just 15 minutes, just as he launched his brand Domyway on 18 May. The singer, who held the launch in Dongyang, Zhejiang, shared that the business is an important turning point in his life, and that he hopes people will think of him as Huang Zitao the entrepreneur and not Huang Zitao the celebrity whenever they see the brand. The sanitary napkin brand is sold for RMB49.80 for a pack of 62 pieces, and RMB 99.80 for 124 pieces. Each set includes mini pads, day-use pads, night-use pads, and sanitary pants. Tao also disclosed the factory arrangement of his product, saying that the factory currently has three fully automatic production lines, which can produce 1,200 sanitary napkins per minute. It also introduced traditional and AI dual systems for stain detection, with a scrap rate of only 2 percent. It is understood that the total investment in the brand was approximately RMB 275 million. He also thanked his own wife Xu Yiyang during the launch, saying that the singer has personally tested the product many times and even made suggestions for research and development. Huang Zitao will distribute 50,000 sanitary pad samples for feedback
11 Apr - It looks like Huang Zitao is truly serious about his sanitary napkin venture, as he recently shared the progress of his manufacturing plans. On 9 April, the singer released a video to officially announce his role as a mentor on "The Rap of China 2025", saying that he would be airing live during the recording of the show that night to announce the latest development of his said project. Just as promised, he then shared that evening that he will be distributing 50,000 sanitary napkins for free as a trial, and that everybody can give their feedbacks in the comment area. Tao also said that the final version of the sanitary napkin will be finalised based on the feedbacks. "I am betting everything on this business. For us, it is a bet on our entire future, all our reputation and everything. I will not allow anything bad to happen," he said. It was back in late March that Tao announced that he is going into the sanitary pad business after watching an expose concerning repackaged flawed sanitary pads.
