Stanislaus County deputy arrested after on-duty sexual misconduct, kidnapping allegations

A deputy with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office was arrested after an investigation into sexual assault and kidnapping allegations while he was on duty. The sheriff's office has been investigating Deputy Israel Morales since March after a person who was arrested reported to Hughson police that a deputy, while allegedly on duty, was engaging in sexual misconduct. Investigators have been verifying the claims, gathering evidence, and locating alleged victims. Morales was placed on modified duty on May 6 and was stripped of his peace officer powers while the investigation was ongoing. Then, on Tuesday, the sheriff's office announced that Morales had been arrested. "The actions detailed in this case represent a serious breach of public trust and are completely contrary to the values and professional standards upheld by the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office," the department said in a statement. Morales, a 30-year-old Hughson resident, is facing multiple charges of sexual misconduct involving a number of women. He's also facing charges of aggravated kidnapping and multiple counts of solicitation of prostitution. The sheriff's office noted that Morales had been with the department since 2018. No other details about the case, including any other victim information, are being released by investigators at this time.

3 suspects arrested in Hughson new home construction site thefts

Detectives have arrested three suspects in connection to thefts at new home developments in Hughson. The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office says they've received at least 11 reports of property theft at KB Homes sites in Hughson over the past 10 months. Air conditioning units, water heaters, along with other appliances and construction materials were reported stolen – about $15,490 worth of property, detectives say. One suspect, Kekoa Octubre, was identified by the department's Rural Crimes Unit and arrested in connection to at least two burglaries of unoccupied homes being built in both Hughson and Patterson. Then, on May 18, deputies were able to interrupt an alleged burglary in progress at another KB Homes development. Deputies reportedly saw the suspects loading up items stolen out of the homes, including cabinets and other construction materials. Two suspects were arrested that night, Adrian Ramirez-Baez and Isaias Machuca. Detectives noted that both burglary cases don't appear to be related. Still, detectives are looking into whether the suspects could possibly be linked to other reported thefts at construction sites in the area.

Stanislaus County woman gets 10-year prison sentence in embezzlement case

A Hughson resident who embezzled money from an Oakdale nonprofit organization will be sentenced to a prison term of 10 years and four months, Stanislaus County District Attorney Jeff Laugero announced Wednesday. Lana Casey, 63, entered an agreement in which she pleaded guilty to 12 felony counts involving grand theft, tax evasion and money laundering, according to a news release. She also admitted to an aggravated white-collar crime enhancement that involved planning and sophistication. The Hughson resident fraudulently obtained $214,456 from nonprofit organizations that worked with Oak Valley District Hospital in Oakdale. The news release says Casey was a signer of the nonprofit organizations' checking accounts. The news release stated that it's alleged that after Casey took the nonprofit organizations' money, she also took money from trusts associated with Carolyn W. Reynolds. Casey will be sentenced June 13 and taken to San Joaquin County to face additional charges related to embezzlement and theft. In September 2024, Casey was indicted by the Stanislaus County Grand Jury on 79 felony counts. A forensic audit done by the California Franchise Tax Board determined that she had $1.45 million in unreported income from 2018 to 2021, with $1.21 million of that being embezzled. This was the largest white-collar indictment pursued by the county DA's Office. The case was investigated by Stanislaus County District Attorney's Bureau of Investigation, California Franchise Tax Board, Oakdale Police Department and San Joaquin County District Attorney's Bureau of Investigation. 'This case is an unfortunate reminder that there are people who obtain a position of trust within an organization for the purpose of stealing the precious donations made by a generous community,' Laugero said in a statement. 'To embezzle these funds for personal gain is the ultimate betrayal of that position of trust, and the severity of the consequences in this case demonstrate the seriousness of this crime.'

Community mourns together after Hughson mother of two dies in murder-suicide

HUGHSON — A community came together Tuesday night to pay their respects to a Hughson mother of two after she was found dead over the weekend in what investigators have ruled a murder-suicide. Modesto police on Monday identified the two people found dead the mother as Dinella Hutsell, 37, and the other person as Stanislaus County Sheriff's Sgt. Daniel Hutsell, 40. They were found by one of their children. The family of Dinella, who went by "Danee," asked that we identify her by her maiden name of Madrigal. Hundreds gathered at LeBright Park, just blocks away from Madrigal's home to honor and remember her and her positive impact on their lives. "It just shows you how connected she was. She would always say, 'Make a friend, don't make an enemy,' " Angie Palafox said. Palafox had known Madrigal for 20 years and was shocked to learn of her death Sunday morning. She remembered Madrigal as if nothing had changed. "I can hear that voice of hers saying, 'Keep it up. Keep going, Angie.' Whatever cause you had, she was there for you," Palafox said. Other friends remembered Madrigal and how she made them laugh. "She was loud and in your face, and she gave me her resume, and I said, 'You can have it. You can have my job,' " a colleague said. Balloons were released into the sky as candles burned for Madrigal at LeBright Park. "It shows you that she really cared about her community," Palafox said. Family in attendance said they truly appreciate all the support they've received. Modesto police say the investigation is ongoing.
