SESAME STREET Lands New Streaming Home at Netflix With New Format and the Return of Fan-Favorite Segments — GeekTyrant

Sesame Street is moving streaming locations. The classic kids series was not renewed at HBO/Max, and Netflix quickly picked it up. The show will make its debut on the streamer later this year with an all-new, reimagined 56th season — plus 90 hours of previous episodes — available to audiences worldwide. The new episodes, which will now center on one 11-minute story, will be available same day-and-date in the U.S. on PBS stations and PBS KIDS digital platforms, keeping U.S. kids' free access to early learning for free. In addition to format changes, the new season will feature the return of fan-favorite segments like Elmo's World and Cookie Monster's Foodie Truck. Sesame Workshop is the global nonprofit behind Sesame Street, with Sal Perez and Kay Wilson Stallings serving as executive producers; Emmy, Humanitas, and NAACP Award nominee Halcyon Person (Karma's World, Dee & Friends in Oz) joins as head writer. Netflix will also be able to develop video games for both Sesame Street and Sesame Street Mecha Builders . via: Deadline

Sesame Street has been saved months after its surprise 'cancellation' by Warner Bros. Discovery

Six months after Warner Bros. Discovery surprisingly 'canceled' the beloved and long-running children's show Sesame Street, Netflix has come aboard to save it. The series has aired on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) since its debut back in 1969, though it moved to HBO following a new deal in 2016. The five-year deal was renewed in 2019 and the show was moved to HBO Max in 2020. New episodes would air on the streaming service exclusively for nine months, with episodes airing on PBS after that nine-month window. That all changed when HBO and its streaming service opted out of the output deal they had with Sesame Street back in December, with the show's 55th season debuting on HBO Max back in January. Now the show has a new home in Netflix, with the streaming service announcing on Monday that the 56th season will debut later this year. Not only will the new season debut on Netflix sometime in 2025, but they will also be adding over 90 hours of Sesame Street episodes as well. The streaming service also teased that the season will showcase, 'fresh format changes,' with the episodes becoming more focused. Each of the new 11-minute episodes will, 'now center on one 11-minute story, allowing for even more character-driven humor and heart,' according to the Netflix release. They also touted the return of, 'fan-favorite segments like Elmo's World and Cookie Monster's Foodie Truck.' The beloved Cookie Monster character will be opening his new Cookie Cart on Sesame Street, while Abby's Fairy Garden will also provide, 'a home to surprising and delightful magical creatures.' Unlike the HBO deal, which forced viewers to pay for a subscription to watch the latest episodes, Netflix will also air their new Sesame Street episodes day-and-date in the United States on PBS TV stations and on PBS Kids digital platforms as well, 'bringing critical early learning to children throughout the country for free.' Sal Perez and Kay Wilson Stallings serving as executive producers, with Emmy, Humanitas, and NAACP Award nominee Halcyon Person (Karma's World, Dee & Friends in Oz) comes aboard as the show's new head writer. HBO Max will continue to license episodes from the Sesame Street library through the year 2027. 'This unique public-private partnership will enable Sesame Workshop to bring our research-based curriculum to young children around the world with Netflix's global reach, while ensuring children in communities across the U.S. continue to have free access on public television to the Sesame Street they love,' Sesame Workshop CEO Sherri Westin said in a statement. 'I strongly believe that our educational programming for children is one of the most important aspects of our service to the American people, and Sesame Street has been an integral part of that critical work for more than half a century,' added Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS. 'We're proud to continue our partnership in the pursuit of having a profound impact on the lives of children for years to come,' Kerger concluded. The news

Bridging generations: how one nursing home is tackling loneliness by pairing seniors with students

As loneliness looms over our elderly population, an innovative initiative at a Dutch retirement home is bridging the gap between generations, offering solutions for both the elderly and university students Image: MART PRODUCTION/pexels When we think of nursing homes, we often picture quiet halls, a subdued atmosphere, and a world separated from the bustling lives of younger generations. As we grow older, we inevitably face the cycle of life loss, change, and, for many, the harsh reality of becoming invisible. It's something often felt but rarely talked about. You may walk down a street, pass by people, and notice that no one makes eye contact or offers a simple smile. It's as if you no longer exist in their world. Loneliness and isolation in the elderly aren't just emotional struggles. They're silent threats to well-being. As people grow older, they lose loved ones, their social circles shrink, and their roles in society shift. Retirement, empty nests, and health issues all of these changes can lead to feeling alone, forgotten, and disconnected. According to global studies, isolation is linked to higher rates of depression, cognitive decline, and even heart disease. And yet, we don't talk about it enough. As people grow older, they lose loved ones, their social circles shrink, and their roles in society shift. Image: omar alnahi /pexels However, a groundbreaking initiative in the Netherlands is redefining this narrative. The Humanitas retirement home in Deventer has created an innovative solution to tackle loneliness among the elderly while offering university students a unique living arrangement, rent-free apartments in exchange for companionship. This intergenerational exchange began when Humanitas director Gea Sijpkes received a request from Onno Selbach, a student frustrated by the poor quality of school housing. Together, they designed a program that not only solved the student housing crisis but also addressed the emotional needs of seniors. Research by the National Academy of Sciences (2012) found that social isolation and loneliness are linked to increased mortality in both older men and women. The effects of loneliness on health are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to a study by Brigham Young University. 'The students bring the outside world in, there is lots of warmth in the contact,' Sijpkes told PBS NewsHour. For older adults, especially those in nursing homes, the loss of close family and friends, combined with reduced mobility, can create a perfect storm of isolation. Human beings are social creatures; we thrive on connection. Without it, our mental, emotional, and even physical health suffers. The Humanitas nursing home in Deventer offers six rent-free apartments to university students from local institutions like Saxion and Windesheim. In exchange, students commit to spending at least 30 hours per month with the elderly residents. Whether it's watching a soccer match, celebrating a birthday, or simply sitting down for a chat, the students act as 'good neighbours,' bringing warmth and life into the home. The elderly residents of Humanitas benefit immensely from the students' presence. Companionship helps alleviate feelings of loneliness and disconnectedness. Studies show that regular social interaction can slow cognitive decline and improve mental health. Video Player is loading.
