Vhembe's barefoot ‘Rasta' ready for Comrades
LIMPOPO – Barefoot marathon runner Humbulani 'Rasta' Mudau from Tshikota township says he is in top form and ready to take on this year's Comrades Marathon, set to take place in June in KwaZulu-Natal.
Participants from around the world will descend on the province to compete in the world's most prestigious ultra-marathon – a gruelling approximately 90km test of endurance, grit, and mental strength. Mudau, who was recently spotted running through the streets of Louis Trichardt, looked every bit the seasoned athlete. When CV caught up with him, he expressed confidence in his preparation and fitness.
'I started training for the marathon in early January this year. I've already covered more than 2 019 km in training, and I feel ready for the Comrades,' he said. The determined runner has set his sights high. 'I aim to finish in the top 10 and hopefully break a record. With the hard work I've put in, anything is possible,' said Mudau, who has already claimed medals in previous marathons.
His ambition is matched by his work ethic. 'I run for a living, and I train hard every day. Everything comes down to commitment and focus. With the support of my team, I'm confident I can deliver my best performance yet.'
Mudau believes that sport has shaped his outlook on life. 'Being an athlete doesn't just help you physically. It trains you to be disciplined and driven in other areas of life too,' he said.
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the many people who have backed him throughout his journey. 'I've received support both financially and morally. Without these people, I wouldn't have come this far,' said Mudau.
To young athletes and aspiring marathoners, his advice is simple yet profound: 'Stay focused, train hard, and put everything in God's hands.'
