New US administration open to reviewing revenge measures against Hungary

Minister Szijjártó welcomed the fact that it was once again confirmed that the US administration considered the Hungarian government a friend, and considered developing bilateral relations important. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the US administration is demonstrating hundred percent openness to reviewing and discontinuing the revenge measures introduced against Hungary during the previous administration. Speaking in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, after talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Minister Szijjártó said they had discussed bilateral economic cooperation and reviewed measures introduced in the last weeks and days of the previous Biden administration that were 'created clearly with the intention of political revenge, in order to harm Hungary and later harm future Hungary-US relations'. 'There are measures involving sanctions that affect Hungary's energy security in the areas of natural gas acquisition and also nuclear energy, but there is also the sanction against Minister [of the Prime Minister's Cabinet Office Antal] Rogán,' he added. 'We have launched the necessary legal procedures concerning all three issues and the secretary of state assured us of absolute openness regarding leaving behind us these revenge measures as soon as possible,' the foreign minister said. Minister Szijjártó said they had also discussed cooperation in investment and emphasised that it also violated the interests of US companies offering jobs to more than a hundred thousand people in Hungary, that the Biden administration had cancelled the agreement on avoiding double taxation. He added that the decision had been in response to Hungary refusing to join the pack in connection with the global minimum tax, which is also opposed by Donald Trump. 'My US counterpart also registered the importance of again signing and reintroducing the agreement on avoiding double taxation,' he said. Minister Szijjártó welcomed the fact that it was once again confirmed that the US administration considered the Hungarian government a friend, and considered developing bilateral relations important. 'It is a cooperation based on friendship and absolute mutual respect, which can be extremely successful in the upcoming period,' he said.

Hungary's role could expand in wake of US rejoining Geneva Consensus Declaration

Valerie Huber said the international coalition would not have survived without Hungary, because following Brazil's withdrawal from it, it was Hungary that offered to host their office in Budapest. Valerie Huber, one of the initiators of the international agreement on women and family policy, said Hungary's role could expand in the wake of the United States rejoining the Geneva Consensus Declaration in line with a decision by US President Donald Trump. Huber who is CEO-president of the Washington-based Institute for Women's Health told MTI on Wednesday that the international coalition would not have survived without Hungary, because following Brazil's withdrawal from it, it was Hungary that offered to host their office in Budapest. She added that Trump's decision about the US rejoining the declaration only four days after taking office was also a sign that US foreign policy under the new administration would be very different from that in the past four years. She noted that Joe Biden had decided as the previous president that the US would leave the family policy declaration. Szabolcs Takacs, Hungary's ambassador to the US, told MTI that Hungary had been consistent in remaining party to the declaration also in the past four years. Trump, his advisors and colleagues were aware of Budapest's dedication to the principles supported by the declaration and appreciated this. 'This could be another significant element of Hungary-US relations, and it is highly symbolic in social policy cooperation, demonstrating that both sides think along the same lines about the future of a healthy society,' he said. The Geneva Consensus Declaration was signed by five countries including Hungary on a US initiative in the autumn of 2020.

Szijjártó: Hungary-US ties are on the cusp of a new golden age

Minister Szijjártó said Donald Trump's inauguration marked "a new era in world politics". Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said political ties between Hungary and the US are 'on the cusp of a new golden age'. Following phone talks with US counterpart Marco Rubio on Sunday, Minister Szijjártó said Donald Trump's inauguration marked 'a new era in world politics'. During the talks, Minister Szijjártó said he and Rubio 'strengthened our commitment to rebuild and renew political ties between the two countries.' While relations 'hit rock bottom' during the Democrat administration, Rubio 'made it clear that they have a vested interest in rebuilding relations so that they become as good as possible,' Minister Szijjártó said. 'We reinforced our mutual commitment to peace, and the secretary of state assured me that President Donald Trump sees ending the three-year war in our neighbourhood as a priority. I told Mr Rubio that Hungary will continue … to support all initiatives that bring us closer to the end of the war and towards peace. Hungary has been living with serious security risks for three years and has suffered serious economic setbacks,' Minister Szijjártó said. 'Donald Trump's success in concluding the war is clearly in Hungary's interest.' The new US administration has the same thinking to Hungary on many important issues, he said. 'I welcomed this week's executive orders which are in line with the Hungarian stance on migration, peace and war, support for families, and the respect for sovereignty and patriotism,' he said. Minister Szijjártó and Rubio also discussed 'that the previous administration was hostile to us and made a number of decisions motivated by revenge… My colleague told me that rebuilding Hungary-US ties also means, in his book, reviewing those measures,' Minister Szijjártó said. Rubio also expressed hope that they may soon meet personally, Minister Szijjártó added.
