Check out the names for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Is yours on the list?

Here is the list of hurricane names for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Boston Globe Names are given to storms once they develop into a tropical storm, the precursor to a hurricane. If all 21 names are used in a given season, then an alternate list of 21 additional names is ready to go. The 2024 hurricane season saw 18 named storms. The hurricane naming convention was established in 1953 as a uniform way of addressing storms and avoiding confusion among meteorologists, the media, and the public while raising awareness of severe weather events. Advertisement 'The work of the Hurricane Committee is critical to ensuring that everyone in the region across the Atlantic and east Pacific basins is ready for the upcoming 2025 hurricane season, providing early warnings and reducing the impacts to life and property from these dangerous storms,' said Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami and chair of the Hurricane Committee. According to the WMO, the names must be instantly recognizable and 'culturally appropriate to each region. In the North Atlantic and Caribbean region, the names have to be suitable for English, French and Spanish-speaking communities.' Names starting with the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z are not used because 'it is difficult to find six suitable names (for each of the six rotating lists),' according to the WMO. These Atlantic hurricane names have been retired

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Earlier this week, the World Meteorological Organization's Hurricane Committee retired three hurricane names. Beryl, Helene, and Milton will no longer be used in the Atlantic basin lists. Beryl and Helene were two of the original 132 names. Beryl will now be replaced with Brianna. Helene will be replaced with Holly. Milton will be replaced with Miguel. More recently, Milton replaced Michael in 2018. When heavy rainfall threatens flooding, you can protect yourself. Here's how Storm names are typically retired after a storm makes a significant impact, including death and catastrophic destruction. Andrew, Katrina, Harvey, and Sandy were some of the most devastating storms that hit the US. Reusing those names could potentially have an emotional impact on people who survived them, so they cannot be used again. Retiring names also helps avoid confusion when predicting storms with the same location, track, or intensity. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Beryl, Helene and Milton join list of nearly 100 hurricane names so deadly they won't be repeated

ADVERTISEMENT Hurricanes Helene, Milton and Beryl caused so much destruction last year that their names are being retired. The World Meteorological Organization on Wednesday officially replaced the names of the trio of 2024 storms that killed more than 300 people and caused more than $119 billion (€107bn) in damage. Brianna, Holly and Miguel take their place in the rotating six-year list of names for Atlantic storms set in advance by a committee of international meteorologists. The names are repeated every six years, unless a storm is so deadly that its name is retired. This killer list is now approaching 100. It also was the seventh most expensive storm in American history, with damages reaching $78.7 billion (€70.9bn), according to the National Hurricane Center. While it came out of the Gulf and hit Florida's Big Bend region as a Category 4, most of the deaths and damage were inland in North Carolina and South Carolina. Milton came on the heels of Helene, bringing high winds, flooding and tornadoes to cause $34.3 billion (€30.9bn) in damage, almost all of it in Florida. It caused 15 fatalities. The WMO notes in particular that when Beryl struck, loss of life in the most devastated areas was fortunately limited by accurate advance forecasts and coordinated regional and national disaster risk management. Although early warnings have dramatically reduced fatalities, economic losses are rising. This is why tropical cyclones are one of the main priorities for the UN's Early Warnings For All initiative . 'Whilst the USA bears the biggest outright economic losses, Small Island Developing States and fragile economies suffer disproportionately,' adds WMO secretary-general Celeste Saulo.

(WFLA) — The organization tasked with maintaining rotating lists of hurricane names has retired the monikers of three of 2024's most destructive storms. Hurricane Beryl was the earliest Category 5 storm on record for the Atlantic basin, devastating parts of the Caribbean. Last month, the National Hurricane Center declared Helene to be the deadliest hurricane since Katrina in 2005. Helene among hurricane names to be retired after deadly 2024 season

The World Meteorological Organization Hurricane Committee has retired the names Beryl, Helene, Milton, and John from its hurricane name lists due to the significant death and destruction these storms caused in 2024. The names Brianna, Holly, and Miguel will replace Beryl, Helene, and Milton on the Atlantic basin list, while Jake will replace John on the eastern Pacific list. This decision follows the WMO's practice of retiring names of storms that have been particularly deadly or destructive, to avoid confusion and sensitivity in future seasons. 'The work of the Hurricane Committee is critical to ensuring that everyone in the region across the Atlantic and east Pacific basins is ready for the upcoming 2025 hurricane season,' said Michael Brennan, Chair of the Hurricane Committee and Director of the Regional Meteorological Specialized Center Miami. Tropical Storm Helene coverage by Channel 9 Hurricane Beryl was the earliest Atlantic basin Category 5 hurricane on record, causing major impacts in the Caribbean. Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought catastrophic damage to the United States, with Helene being the deadliest U.S. hurricane since Katrina in 2005, resulting in over 248 fatalities. Hurricane John caused deadly flooding in the Mexican state of Guerrero. The retirement of these names underscores the severity of their impacts. The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was notably active, with 18 named storms, 11 of which became hurricanes, and five reaching major hurricane status. This marked the ninth consecutive above-average season. The WMO Hurricane Committee also updated the Region IV Hurricane Operational Plan, enhancing the criteria for issuing Potential Tropical Cyclone advisories to provide earlier warnings. The retirement of these hurricane names reflects the ongoing efforts by the WMO to improve public safety and preparedness in the face of increasingly severe tropical cyclones.
