BU presents American Civic Association with Sigma Award

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – As the school year winds down, one of Binghamton University's departments held its annual awards ceremony, including special recognition for a community partner. The American Civic Association was the recipient of the Sigma Award from the Public Administration and Policy Department for its lifetime of public service to Greater Binghamton. The ACA regularly utilizes interns from the Master's in Public Administration program giving them real world experience in grant writing, immigration policy and other government work. Executive Director Hussein Adams credited his staff in accepting the award on behalf of the organization. Adams says his staff members regularly make presentations to MPA classes. And he says the ACA benefits from the diversity of the BU students, many of whom are familiar with foreign languages and cultures. 'We're fortunate enough to be able to utilize their services, their skills, their intelligence and young brains to help the organization as an intern, same thing with our volunteers. So, Binghamton University is definitely a great partner,' said Adams. Adams says community support is more vital than ever, given that it has recently lost some federal funding. The school also presented awards to students and alumni. ACA forced to shut down refugee resettlement program

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local agency has already lost federal funding it used to settle refugees in Greater Binghamton. The American Civic Association has effectively shut down its Refugee Reception and Placement Program. The Trump Administration has paused the federal financial support which had been providing $1,500 per person to cover resettlement costs for the first 90 days after a refugee arrives in our area. ACA Executive Director Hussein Adams says the newcomers are hard workers who contribute more to the community than they take from it. 'Most of the local employers that have received our refugees and who are currently still employed, have had nothing but positive things to say about their work ethic, about their consistency, about their mentality, about what they have brought to the organization, to their business,' said Adams. Adams says the ACA has resettled roughly 100 refugees since the start of 2024, including some at the start of this year. He says his organization plans to use some state funding as well as money from foundations and other private donors to continue to support the people who are already here. Adams says the federal refugee program is currently undergoing a 90-day review by the administration. Meanwhile, President Trump has barred additional asylum-seekers from entering the country. Adams says that forced some refugees to cancel their travel plans to come to Greater Binghamton.
