'I think the Kop shouted the ball in' - Huth on Garcia 'ghost goal'

Liverpool's 'ghost goal' against Chelsea in the Champions League 20 years ago "sparked the rivalry between the two clubs", says former Blues defender Robert was a memorable moment - for better or for worse - for both sets of fans and two-decades on it is still argued if Luis Garcia's goal, that sent the Reds through to the final at Chelsea's expense, crossed the proved to be a key moment on the way to Liverpool's comeback win over AC Milan in of the squad for that game, Huth explained to BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club how Blues boss Jose Mourinho reacted to that moment, stating: "He was fuming, off course he would be."When the goal went in, nobody really knew what was going on because it wasn't obvious to anyone. It didn't even look that close particularly."The lads were deflated, he was fuming, but what can you do? The game is done."Mourinho created a number of rivalries during his time at Chelsea, but the one between him and Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez came to be particularly whether it was that game that kick-started it, Huth said: "They both gave as good as they got. They both had a lot to say for each other. But, that game definitely sparked the rivalry between the two clubs."This time Liverpool got the better of us, but then we beat them in the next quarter-final a year or two later."It is water under the bridge now but it was frustrating. I think The Kop shouted the ball in rather than the ball actually crossing the line."

Virgil van Dijk's still behind defender who Jose Mourinho ripped to shreds despite title win

Virgil van Dijk lifted his second Premier League title with Liverpool on Sunday, but he's still a way behind one former Chelsea player who tasted glory under Jose Mourinho despite a rocky relationship Jose Mourinho infamously once branded Robert Huth as "s***", but the former Chelsea star is still more well-decorated than Virgil van Dijk in terms of English top-flight titles. Huth lifted three Premier League titles during his days as a professional footballer, including two under the Portuguese mastermind during his Chelsea heydays. However, according to the centre-half himself, that still didn't stop him from getting a lambasting from the 'Special One' on occasion. ‌ Speaking about his experiences with Mourinho during a chat with Ladbrokes, Huth explained: "If you didn't meet his standards, he'd give you a chance, and then he'd give you another chance, but by that point if you made a mistake, your time was up. That was the environment he created, and he's the reason Chelsea became so successful. ‌ "He laid those foundations and those expectations for the club, every single day. It wasn't just about what we did on a Saturday, it was every day of your life as a Chelsea player, it was about meeting his standards. "I loved him, to be honest. I thought he was great - he was very black or white. It's hard to think of many times I got especially positive feedback from him, he wasn't really one to dish those sort of things out. He was tough. "I think I'd have had to have scored six goals in a game to get something positive out of him. But on the other side of things, he had no problem analysing your individual performance. 'That was s***, that was s***, that was s***!' and then he'd talk you through your mistakes and how you could improve. "I had one too many meetings where he told me I was bad. But it's a trait that was needed back in the day, and it's not something everyone can deal with." After breaking through the youth system at Stamford Bridge in 2002, Huth lifted back-to-back Premier League titles with Chelsea in 2004/05, and 2005/06, before moving on to Middlesbrough. After a three-year stint in the north east, Huth moved on to play for Stoke City between 1009 and 2015, before signing for Leicester City. ‌ It was in the midlands that Huth clinched his third and final Premier League title under the stewardship of Claudio Ranieri in the 2015/16 campaign, before retiring from the beautiful game in 2018. And should Virgil van Dijk hope to etch his names into the annals of history as one of the Premier League's most highly-decorated centre-halves, he'll want to win another league title or two over the course of the next two seasons. The 33-year-old Dutchman arrived at Anfield in 2018 in a £75m move from Southampton, before lifting his first league title under Jurgen Klopp the following year. His second Premier League title landed under Arne Slot's guidance last Sunday, when Liverpool thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 to capture glory on home soil with four games to spare, after ensuring that Arsenal couldn't catch them in their race. While his future at the club remained in doubt for large parts of the 2024/25 campaign – given that his contract was set to expire in the summer – a two-year extension signed in April will ensure that the club captain remains at Anfield until at least 2027. And who knows, he could even beat Huth in terms of Premier League titles won should the next two years play out in Liverpool's favour.

'Everyone just bought into it straight away'

Jose Mourinho had an "aura" that you just "had to follow", says former Chelsea defender Robert 30 April marks the 20th anniversary of Mourinho's first Premier League title win and the Blues' first league success for 50 his arrival to English football by calling himself "The Special One" in his first news conference, it made onlookers, including his new players, sit up and take notice."I was watching it [the first news conference] and I'd never seen someone with so much confidence, self-belief and it all transferred into the first meeting," Huth told BBC Radio 5 Live."Everyone just bought into it straight away. You could see the confidence straight away and it just got better and better. The standard got higher and higher."Success gives you the power to walk into a room with Roman Abramovich and be so demanding, and only he had the charisma to do it. He wanted 11 players that worked, he didn't want anyone to just drag along in a game. He wanted 11 workhorses and that's exactly what he signed."While not a regular starter, centre-back Huth was part of the team that won the league in Mourinho's first season in charge having conceded just 15 how he convinced players to buy into his style and mentality, the 40-year-old said: "He was a dad kind of figure - he'd treat you harshly if you made a mistake, but if you did well he'd hug you and made sure you do it again. He had that aura about him where you knew you had to follow him."We had 25 players competing for a spot. The competition in the whole squad was unbelievable and every training session was like a fight."If someone had a bit of an injury and it was two weeks out, he'd go, 'can you make it four weeks?' Just so other players in the squad could play minutes. All these psychology things that he worked on, worked."He was hands on with his players and staff, and if they weren't performing to the level he wanted them to be, he'd have a go. He set the standards - first in the training ground, first on the pitch, last to leave."When you have a manager like that, you just buy into it and love it."Listen to more Mourinho chat in the final hour of the show
