North Korea's Kim guides missile test for nuclear counterattack

KYODO NEWS - 16 hours ago - 12:19 | World, All, Japan North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Thursday guided a missile test to boost the military's nuclear counterattack capability, according to state-run media, a report that came after South Korea and Japan detected the launch of multiple ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan the same day. The drill was to train units in the operation of a 600-millimeter multilayer rocket system and the Hwasongpho-11-Ka tactical ballistic missile, the official Korean Central News Agency said Friday. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday the missiles were fired from the Wonsan area in the eastern part of North Korea, adding it detected launches of various types of short-range ballistic missiles from the area. Japan, South Korea and the United States view the large multiple rocket launcher as a short-range ballistic missile system. Stressing the need to enhance "the pivotal role" of the country's nuclear forces in all aspects of strategies to deter and fight a war, Kim called for steadily boosting the normal combat readiness of the force, KCNA said. He also said it is the consistent policy of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea to "preferentially intensify the qualitative superiority of the artillery force" and sought a further increase in the combat reliability of tactical nuclear weapon systems. Kim guided a similar missile test in April last year. KCNA accused the United States and its "vassal states" of staging a series of nuclear operation drills on the Korean Peninsula and in its vicinity and making a nuclear war against North Korea "a fait accompli." The news agency said this "reckless act of aggravating the situation" requires the North Korean armed forces to prepare for "a rapid reaction capability and a thoroughgoing war posture." North Korea's Kim Jong Un oversees nuclear counterattack missile test

SEOUL, May 9 (UPI) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a test of short-range ballistic missiles and long-range artillery in a demonstration of Pyongyang's nuclear counterstrike capabilities, state-run media said Friday. Korean Central News Agency reported that the drill, which was conducted Thursday, involved a 600-millimeter multilayer rocket system and Hwasongpho-11-Ka tactical ballistic missiles. Kim stressed the need to "steadily enhance the pivotal role of the nuclear force in all aspects of the strategy to deter war and the strategy to fight war," the report said. "[Kim] said that the DPRK should continue to direct efforts to steadily improving the long-range precision striking capability and efficiency of weapons systems, proceeding from the security environment of our state and the realistic requirements of modern warfare," KCNA said. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is the official name of North Korea. The KCNA report came a day after South Korea's military said it detected the launch of multiple short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area on the peninsula's east coast. The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff speculated that the launch may have been a test of weapons systems meant for export to Russia. Seoul and Washington say that North Korea has supplied missiles, artillery and soldiers to Russia for its war against Ukraine, while receiving much-needed financial support and advanced military technology in return. Earlier this week, North Korean state media reported on a visit by Kim to a munitions factory, where he called for workers to boost their output of artillery shells. Prior to Thursday's launch, the drill inspected the operational reliability of the North's Haekbangashoe "nuclear trigger" system. First tested in April 2024, the nuclear weapons management system is used to link a launch order to its actual execution. "The goal of the drill was achieved and the reliability of the command and mobilization system capable of quickly reacting to any nuclear crisis was verified," KCNA reported. The KCNA article accused the United States and its allies of staging nuclear operation drills on the Korean Peninsula and making a nuclear attack on North Korea a "fait accompli." "This reckless act of aggravating the situation requires the armed forces of the DPRK to prepare for a rapid reaction capability and a thoroughgoing war posture," KCNA said. Pyongyang frequently criticizes U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises as rehearsals for an invasion and has denounced the deployment of American strategic assets, such as aircraft carrier strike groups and B-1B strategic bombers, to the Korean Peninsula. On Friday, South Korea's Unification Ministry condemned the launch, which was the North's first ballistic missile test since March 10 and its fourth of the year. The launch was "a violation of Security Council resolutions and a clear act of provocation that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," ministry spokeswoman Kim In-ae said at a press briefing.

N. Korea's Kim oversees missile test, emphasizes combat readiness of nuclear forces

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has overseen a joint strike drill involving long-range artillery and a short-range tactical ballistic missile while emphasizing the combat readiness of its nuclear forces, state media reported Friday, a day after the country launched multiple ballistic missiles. The drill was aimed at familiarizing military units with the weapons' operations, and the test-fire verified the reliability of the command and mobilization system to quickly react during a nuclear crisis, the Korean Central News Agency said. The drill involved a 600-millimeter multilayer rocket system and the Hwasongpho-11-Ka tactical ballistic missile, according to the KCNA. "Stressing the need to steadily enhance the pivotal role of the nuclear force in all aspects of the strategy to deter war and the strategy to fight war," Kim said, according to the KCNA report. "It is very important to steadily perfect the normal combat readiness of the nuclear force." Between 8:10 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, South Korea's military detected the launch of multiple short-range ballistic missiles of various types from the North's eastern coastal city of Wonsan, the fourth ballistic missile test by the country so far this year. The South Korean military speculated that the launch may have been part of a performance test linked to North Korea's arms transactions with Russia. Kim ordered a further increase in the combat reliability and operational space of the tactical nuclear weapons systems, stressing the need to enhance "the pivotal role" of nuclear forces in all aspects of the strategy to deter and fight a war, the KCNA also said. "The radical growth of the artillery force would foresee many changes in the practice of our future military actions and give greater and different possibilities to securing the operational capabilities of our army," the KCNA quoted Kim as saying. Prior to the launch, the drill also inspected the operational reliability of the Haekbangashoe system, or the nuclear trigger system in English, a comprehensive nuclear weapons management system that links a launch order to the actual execution process, developed in 2023. The KCNA accused the US and its allied countries of staging a series of nuclear operation drills on and around the Korean Peninsula and treating a nuclear war against North Korea "a fait accompli," calling it a "reckless" act that requires the military to maintain "a rapid reaction capability and a thoroughgoing war posture." The KCNA also quoted a defense ministry spokesman as describing the drill as a measure to demonstrate "the rapid counteraction posture and capability of the armed forces" in the event of a "change of the military situation in the sensitive region." During Kim's "field guidance" Thursday, he was accompanied by Jang Chang-ha, general director of the Missile Administration, and Kim Yong-hwan, president of the Academy of Defence Sciences, as well as several high-ranking party officials.
