East Moline woman sentenced in ‘skip scan' case

A woman from East Moline who was arrested for 'skip scanning' at Hy-Vees throughout the Quad Cities has been sentenced in one of the cases. Linaya Bennett, 41, pleaded guilty to one count of using a juvenile to commit an indictable offense and one count of second-degree theft. A count of ongoing criminal conduct was dismissed. She was sentenced to 10 years in the Iowa Department of Corrections for the using a juvenile charge and ordered to pay a fine of $1,370. The Court suspended the fine. Bennett was sentenced to five years in the Iowa Department of Corrections on the second-degree theft charge and ordered to pay a fine of $1,025. The Court suspended this fine. The prison terms were suspended and Bennett was placed on probation for three years, pending good behavior. She must obtain a mental health evaluation and successfully complete any recommended treatment, obtain a substance use evaluation and successfully complete any recommended treatment, avoid using controlled substances and alcohol, complete the QCALM class, maintain employment and any other conditions set by the probation officer. Bennett was ordered to pay victim restitution in the amount of $2,429.18 to the Hy-Vee on W. Locust Street.
