Is this Phil Mickelson's last U.S. Open? Here's what he said ahead of LIV Golf event

Is this Phil Mickelson's last U.S. Open? Here's what he said ahead of LIV Golf event For the third straight major, there's a chance for a player to complete the career Grand Slam. Rory McIlroy became the sixth member of the exclusive club with his victory at the Masters in April, while Jordan Spieth missed the cut in his ninth attempt to win the final leg he needs at the PGA Championship in May. Now, it's Phil Mickelson's turn to try again to win the elusive U.S. Open at Oakmont next week. The six-time major winner has six runner-up finishes at his country's national championship but has never lifted the hardware. Could this be his final shot at glory? Mickelson is in the final year of his five-year exemption for winning the PGA Championship at Kiawah in 2021. Asked during his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday ahead of this week's LIV Virginia event at the Robert Trent Jones Club in Manassas, Virginia, Mickelson addressed the possibility that this could be his final U.S. Open. 'There's a high likelihood that it will be, but I haven't really thought about it too much,' he said. Mickelson has struggled since winning PGA Championship Mickelson is trying to regain the mojo of his thrilling PGA Championship win at Kiawah, when he became the oldest major winner. But since jumping to LIV, his game has abandoned him with the exception of a back-door runner-up finish at the 2023 Masters. Mickelson finished 39th in the individual points race in 2022, improving slightly to 33rd in '23 and dropping to 50th a year ago. It's also been dragging down his team's performance. 'I want to be realistic,' said the HyFlyers captain. 'I want this team to succeed. I don't want to hold it back. If I'm not an asset, if I'm not helping, if I'm holding it back, then it's time for me to move on and get somebody else in here who is going to really help the team win and succeed.' But Mickelson, who finished third at LIV Mexico before missing the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship, is the eternal optimist and is using this week to get ready for his 34th start at the U.S. Open. 'What I have thought about is how similar this week's course is set up to what we'll see next week. We have greens that are rolling 14 to 15 on the Stimpmeter, just like we will next week. We have contours, undulations, just like we will next week. I think it's a great way to prepare for next week without minimizing the effects of this week because this is the first tournaments of our second half of LIV, and we all need and want and are working hard to getting off to a good start and making the second half of LIV great," he said. 'Short game, touch, chipping around the greens, rough, speed, lag drills and speed and touch on the greens, all of that's critical here same thing as next week. It couldn't be a better spot to get ready.' What are Phil Mickelson's upcoming options? Mickelson has missed the cut at the U.S. Open in his last three attempts to complete the career Grand Slam. While his exempt status into the U.S. Open ends with this year's edition, it's possible the USGA could offer him a special exemption in 2026. Before winning the 2021 PGA, Mickelson had been granted a special exemption, but then didn't need it after his win. He could also participate in 36-hole Final Qualifying. Asked if he would consider attempting to qualify, Mickelson said, 'I don't know. I don't know. I haven't thought that far.'

'High likelihood' next U.S. Open will be Phil Mickelson's last

After he shocked the golf world four years ago by winning the PGA Championship at age 50, Phil Mickelson had a moment of honest self-assessment. "It's very possible that this is the last tournament I ever win. Like if I'm being realistic," Mickelson said on that triumphant Sunday at Kiawah Island. Mickelson hasn't won since, and while he wasn't eager to reflect Wednesday on a career that includes six major titles and just as many famous near-misses, he indicated his competitive future is limited. He said he wants to help his teammates on LIV's HyFlyers squad and would step away if he's no longer doing that. "I'm also going to be 55 in a couple weeks, so I want to be realistic there, too. I want this team to succeed. I don't want to hold it back," Mickelson said. "If I'm holding it back, then it's time for me to move on and get somebody else in here." Mickelson also acknowledged the possibility that Oakmont will be his last U.S. Open. He has a record six runner-up finishes at the national championship, the only major he hasn't won. "There's a high likelihood that it will be," Mickelson said, "but I haven't really thought about it too much." The USGA gave Mickelson a special exemption to the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, which he ultimately didn't need because he won at Kiawah a month earlier. Nonetheless, the U.S. Open historically does not grant more than one special exemption to any player, and Mickelson has missed the past three U.S. Open cuts. He remains exempt for the other three majors as a past champion. Mickelson has won six major tournaments in his professional career, which began all the way back in 1992. He won the Masters in 2004, 2006 and 2010, the PGA Championship in 2005 and 2021 and The Open Championship in 2013, but has yet to win the U.S. Open. "Lefty" has finished second at the U.S. Open on six occasions: 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2013. Mickelson has been attempting to finish off the last leg of the grand slam since 2014, following his victory at The Open the year prior. The U.S. Open will be played from June 12 through June 15 at Oakmont Country Club. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Dustin Johnson's 4Aces own solo lead after Round 2 of LIV Golf Singapore

SINGAPORE – Three seasons after first battling for a LIV Golf individual title, Dustin Johnson and Joaquin Niemann enter Sunday's final round of LIV Golf Singapore ready for another duel. [Related: What is LIV Golf? Format, everything to know about the 2025 season] Niemann, the Torque GC captain, shot the best score in Saturday's second round at Sentosa Golf Club, a 7-under 64 to grab a share of the lead with Johnson, the 4Aces GC captain who followed his opening 63 with a 3-under 68. The two are at 11 under, three shots better than their closest pursuers. Johnson's team owns a five-stroke lead over Phil Mickelson's HyFlyers GC in the team competition as the 4Aces hope to end a drought of 22 consecutive tournaments without a win. Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC are in third place, eight strokes off the lead, as they seek a third consecutive tournament victory. Johnson and Niemann are in the leaders' group in the final round for the first time since Niemann made his LIV Golf debut in Boston during the 2022 Invitational Series season. Johnson posted his first LIV Golf individual win that week by rolling in a dramatic eagle putt in a playoff that included Niemann. Recalled Niemann: "I still remember that day. It was my first week on LIV. He got it going, I got it going. I felt like I was the leader for a few holes, and he birdied back and then made an amazing putt on the playoff hole." While they have competed in the same group in subsequent LIV Golf tournaments, they've yet to duel with the lead entering the final round. The two players are among the most decorated in LIV Golf's young history, with three individual tournament wins each as well as multiple team victories. "It's always fun playing with DJ," Niemann said. "I'm excited for that tomorrow." There are plenty of chasers hoping to catch the two with a hot round Sunday, including four players tied for third at 8 under who are each after their first LIV Golf victory. [Read more: How to watch LIV Golf Singapore 2025: Date, time, TV channels, streaming] Niemann's Torque teammate Sebastián Muñoz continued his fine play with a 3-under 68 and finds himself inside the top five of the leaderboard for the eighth time after 11 rounds this season. Ripper GC's Lucas Herbert remains his team's best-performing player this season, shooting a 5-under 66. Smash GC's Jason Kokrak also shot 66 and hopes to join teammates Talor Gooch (2023) and captain Brooks Koepka (2024) as Singapore individual winners. "Good vibes with two teammates that have already won here," Kokrak said. "I know the golf course well enough. I know what to do. It's just going out there and actually doing it." Cameron Tringale shot his second consecutive 67 to lead the resurgent HyFlyers. Last week in Hong Kong, Mickelson posted his first individual podium finish as the HyFlyers tied for third as a team. Tringale has not yet won an individual title and the HyFlyers have never won as a team. Sunday in Sentosa could be a special day if they can rally. "We all just want it so bad," Tringale said. "We want to prove to people that we're a legitimate team. There's no reason we can't do it. We're all excited about the chance." The 4Aces, meanwhile, want to return to the dominant force that won five times — including the Team Championship — in the inaugural eight-tournament 2022 season, and then twice in 2023 before the drought began. "The competition is so good out here," Johnson said. "The quality of players from top to bottom is pretty high. To win as a team, it's really tough." Outdueling the red-hot Niemann, who already has one win this season in Adelaide, will be equally difficult. "He's been playing great this season," Johnson said. "It's going to be a tough challenge tomorrow." TEAM SCORES LIV Golf's new scoring format this season now involves all four scores now counting in every round in the team competition.
