A Night of Dreams and Emotions: The 11th Alexandria Short Film Festival Kicks Off on April 27

The opening ceremony of the 11th edition of the Alexandria Short Film Festival was nothing short of magical — a night that combined pride, passion, and heartfelt moments, marking yet another milestone for one of the world's most important celebrations of short cinema. The night began with warm words from Dr. Mohamed El-Adl, the Honorary President of the festival, who spoke with emotion about his continuous support for the festival since its humble beginnings. He emphasized his unwavering belief in its mission — to uplift short filmmakers and provide a vibrant space for artistic expression and cultural dialogue across the globe. In a nostalgic yet inspiring speech, Festival President, Director Mohamed Mahmoud, recalled the early days of the festival — how it all started with just four dreamers in a small downtown room. Today, that small dream has blossomed into a major international event, drawing creators from over 119 countries. Mahmoud paid heartfelt thanks to the team and partners who believed in the vision, promising that even greater achievements are on the horizon. Festival Director, Mohamed Saadoun, also took the stage to reflect on the major challenges faced during this year's edition. He described the journey as a collective dream built by passionate friends, supportive partners, and a tireless team. Saadoun expressed deep gratitude to everyone who contributed, affirming that the continuation of the festival is a victory for every lover of cinema and creativity. Adding to the night's inspiring tone, Artistic Director Mony Mahmoud spoke about the artistic leaps the festival achieved this year. With over 2,500 films submitted from 119 countries, the selection process was fiercely competitive. Mahmoud proudly announced the launch of a brand-new Artificial Intelligence section, keeping the festival at the forefront of technological innovation and artistic exploration. But the evening wasn't only about speeches — it was filled with touching celebrations of talent, artistry, and heartfelt bonds. In a truly emotional moment, the festival honored the brilliant actress Riham Abdel Ghafour, awarding her the Hypatia Golden Award for Creativity. With a career spanning more than 25 years, Riham has dazzled audiences in drama, cinema, theatre, and short films, becoming a shining icon in Egyptian and Arab art. The award was presented to her by actor Khaled Kamal, creating a touching scene filled with genuine affection and admiration. Congratulations, Riham — your brilliance continues to inspire! Another unforgettable highlight was the honoring of the rising star Ahmed Malek, who received the Hypatia Golden Award for Creativity for his remarkable journey from early TV appearances to international success in films like Clash, Sheikh Jackson, Night/Exterior, and The Swimmers. The moment became even more special when the award was presented by his close friend, actor Taha El Desouky. As Taha delivered heartfelt words about their friendship and journey together — especially after their collaboration in Wlad El Shams (aired during Ramadan 2025) — Ahmed Malek couldn't hold back his tears, moved by the deep bond they share. It was a pure, emotional moment that reminded everyone why cinema is not just about storytelling — it's about connection, growth, and dreams realized together. The 11th Alexandria Short Film Festival began not just with lights and applause, but with a celebration of human spirit, resilience, creativity, and friendship. If this magical opening is any sign of what's to come — the festival promises to be truly unforgettable.
