Lakeland man charged in 2020 Christmas Eve shooting that killed great-grandmother

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A suspect connected to a shooting that left a Lakeland great-grandmother dead on Christmas Eve in 2020 was charged in federal court. Taqiy Lewis, 27, of Lakeland, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In 2015, he was convicted of providing false information to law enforcement in a capital felony and was sentenced to five years in prison. Maebelle Cooper, 70, was shot and killed in her front yard on Christmas Eve in 2020. Her daughter, her daughter's husband and their 13-year-old daughter were also wounded in the attack. Earlier that day, 15-year-old Ralph Lamones III met with an acquaintance at Simpson Park to have her reset a cellphone he was purchasing from her. He was robbed of $220 at gunpoint and the suspects drove away in a silver Hyundai Sedan, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court. The suspects returned to the park, where one of them fought Lamones III. A suspect identified as Alfurquan O'Neal insisted they fight again, but Lamones III refused and called his mother, Shawanda Lamones, to come pick him up. His mother arrived with her husband, Ralph Lamones Jr., who grabbed a gun from his vehicle and confronted O'Neal about the robbery. Lamones III took O'Neal to the ground and a pistol fell from O'Neal's pocket during the struggle. He handed the gun to his father and the family then left the park. Shortly after the family returned home, a white Buick sedan, a black Ford Edge SUV, and a red 4-wheeler arrived. Shots rang out during an argument about the robbery, wounding several members of the family. Shawanda Lamones, Ralph Lamones Jr. and 13-year-old A'Sasha Lamones were taken to the hospital and survived their injuries. Cooper was shot twice and died from her injuries at the hospital. According to the criminal complaint, Lewis was spotted with a gun on security camera footage during the shooting. Prosecutors said he fired for 3-to-4 seconds before turning and leaving the area. Lewis was identified by an officer who recognized him, as well as his own mother. Law enforcement discovered photos of the gun allegedly used in the shooting on his social media, where he was also seen wearing a similar jacket as seen on surveillance camera video the day of the shooting. Months later, a Facebook user sent Lewis a Crime Stoppers post about the shooting and offered to be his alibi, according to the complaint. Lewis remained in state custody on Wednesday, but is expected to be taken into federal custody. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
