Brother of Linda Nolan reveals prostate cancer diagnosis months after sister's death

Brian Nolan has revealed his own prostate cancer diagnosis following the death of his sister, Linda. Linda Nolan passed away in January at the age of 65. She had been a long-time advocate for breast cancer awareness and died surrounded by her siblings at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, having been admitted with double pneumonia. Linda, along with her sisters Denise, Coleen, Bernie, Maureen, and Anne, formed the pop group The Nolans, achieving chart success with hits such as "Gotta Pull Myself Together" and "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was known in her later life for appearing on Loose Women and Celebrity Big Brother. Brian told the Mirror that having cancer is like 'being hit by a train' and 'you start plunging into the the abyss'. His doctor told him that 'we're going to treat this and we're going to cure this', and Brian said he will have a prostatectomy, which removes part or all of the prostate gland. 'I'm devastated, but I believe I'm hoping that we can do it,' he added. When asked by the newspaper about it being difficult to tell his siblings, the news after it was confirmed days following Linda's funeral, Brian said they have 'been through enough' so he told them individually of his condition. 'I'm focusing on the hope, they can treat it and they can cure it,' he added. 'The way my sisters handled their cancers, I hope to God that I can have the courage that they had.' Linda was first diagnosed in 2005, given the all-clear in 2011, but in 2017 was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. In 2020 it spread and by 2023 was in her brain. Anne, who Linda joined on the TV series The Nolans Go Cruising, was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in 2020 and previously said she is now cancer-free. Loose Women star Coleen was diagnosed with skin cancer last year and said she was using a chemotherapy cream to remove it. Their sister Bernie died of breast cancer in 2013 aged 52. Brian said that he was referred to a genetic department in Manchester, and it was 'amazing how many people had actually had cancer as some part of the reason they died' in his family. He said the doctors are 'even thinking that there may be a genetic mutation or something between the four cancers that our families' have, which includes breast, prostate, liver and pancreatic cancers. Brian said his father 'died of systemic cirrhosis (liver damage) but he also had liver cancer, my uncle died of pancreatic cancer'. He also said he wants to raise awareness of prostate cancer as his friends did not known anything about the illness. 'We should know more about this, and I'm going to definitely push for a campaign to to send guys a letter once a year, like we do for women and bowel cancer,' Brian said. Other famous faces such as comedian Sir Stephen Fry, the late broadcaster Bill Turnbull – and more recently Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, who revealed his prostate cancer was terminal in 2024, have been outspoken about the condition.

Coleen Nolan has paid tribute to her 'beautiful sister' Linda on what would have been her 66th birthday. Dublin-born Linda, who was part of family pop group The Nolans, which also included sisters Coleen, Maureen, Bernie, Denise and Anne, died 'peacefully' surrounded by her family last month at the age of 65. She died in hospital in Blackpool, having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. She was given the all-clear in 2011 but in 2017 she was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. By 2020, it had spread and by 2023 it had reached her brain. In a post on X on Sunday, Coleen, 59, said: 'To my beautiful sister, think of you everyday, but especially today on your birthday. To my beautiful sister… think of you everyday , but especially today on your birthday… I miss you so much and life won't be the same without you in it… 💔 — Coleen Nolan (@NolanColeen) February 23, 2025 'I miss you so much and life won't be the same without you in it.' The post was accompanied with a video of the pair dancing at a party as choral music plays in the background. Linda's funeral took place at St Paul's Church in Blackpool earlier this month, which saw her arrive in a pink sparkly coffin as members of the public applauded. During the ceremony, her sister Denise Nolan-Anderson said Linda would have 'loved all the fuss', describing her as the 'life and soul of any big occasion'. A number of The Nolans have been diagnosed with cancer. Coleen revealed she had been diagnosed with skin cancer last year, and was using a chemotherapy cream to remove it. Anne, who featured in TV series The Nolans Go Cruising, was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in 2020 but is now cancer-free. Bernie died of breast cancer in 2013 aged 52. With The Nolans, Linda recorded hits such as Gotta Pull Myself Together and I'm In The Mood For Dancing in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The group had three UK top 10 singles and two top 10 albums. Linda appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and her musical theatre career included Blood Brothers, Pump Boys And Dinettes and Prisoner Cell Block H. She also wrote a Daily Mirror column.

Linda Nolan's funeral will take place at the church where she got married - and fans are invited

Linda Nolan's funeral will take place at the church where she got married. The former Nolans singer - who was married to Brian Hudson from 1981 until his death in 2007 - passed away at the age of 65 on 15 January following a long battle with cancer and now her sisters have invited fans to attend her memorial service at St. Paul's Church in Blackpool to pay their respects. The Nolans wrote on their official Instagram page on Monday (27.01.25) morning: "The Nolan family invites everyone to join them in celebrating the extraordinary life of Linda Nolan, who passed away peacefully on 15th January 2025. "Linda was a beacon of light, strength and unwavering love who inspired everyone she met, in addition to millions around the world. Her absence leaves an ache in our hearts, but her legacy will live on through the joy, hope and kindness she shared so freely. "Linda's funeral service will take place on Saturday, 1st February 2025, at St. Paul's Church, Honister Avenue, Blackpool, at 10:30 am. "Everyone who knew Linda, or whose lives she touched, are welcome to come and pay their respects as we remember her remarkable life. Fans and public are welcome to gather outside the church for the funeral - and in true Linda spirit, the more the merrier! "St. Paul's Church holds a deeply special place in Linda's heart. It is where she married the love of her life, Brian Hudson, with whom she shared 26 wonderful years of marriage. Brian was Linda's rock, her soulmate, and the love of her life, just as she was his." The post described how the Linda managed to "carry on" following the death of her husband - who passed away as a result skin cancer and liver failure - and now the sisters are hoping to "reunite" her with Brian almost 20 years after his own funeral. It continued: "When Brian tragically passed away in 2007, Linda found the strength to carry on, but her love for him never wavered. St. Paul's was also where Linda said her final goodbye to Brian, holding his funeral in the same church where they had exchanged their vows. Now, Linda will return to this sacred place to be reunited with Brian once more, finally at peace and back in his loving embrace." The family is also raising money for Trinity Hospice, and have encouraged fans to give what they can via a link on their social media. Linda was an original member of The Nolans in the 1970s when they were known as The Nolan Sisters alongside Anne Nolan, Maureen Nolan, Bernie Nolan - who died of cancer in 2013 at the age of 52 - and Denise Nolan before their younger sister Coleen Nolan joined in 1979. They became known for their hit single 'I'm In The Mood For Dancing', before Linda went on to carve out a stellar career in West End theatre and played the leading role of Mrs Johnstone in 'Blood Brothers' for a number of years. Around various reunions with her sisters, Linda appeared on 'Celebrity Big Brother' and occasionally joined Coleen as a panellist on 'Loose Women'. The new post concluded: "Linda was more than a beloved sister, friend, and entertainer - she was a symbol of hope, humour and resilience."
