‘22 Minutes,' Nelly Furtado among early Canadian Screen Award winners
TORONTO - CBC sketch comedy 'This Hour Has 22 Minutes,' TSN's soccer coverage and singer Nelly Furtado were among the big winners at the first of several Canadian Screen Awards galas. A ceremony for news, entertainment and sports categories named the 'I'm Like a Bird' singer best host of a live entertainment special for steering the 2024 Juno Awards, which also won best live entertainment special. The biggest haul went to CBC's long-running satirical news show, which claimed four wins in sketch comedy categories – for best program, writing, direction and performance. The title for best national newscast went to CTV News' 'National News with Omar Sachedina,' best news or information series went to CBC's 'The Fifth Estate,' and best talk or entertainment news series went to CTV's 'The Good Stuff with Mary Berg.' Best news anchor went to Adrienne Arsenault for her work on CBC's 'The National,' best national reporter went to Jeff Semple of 'Global National,' and best local reporter went to CBC Indigenous's Jackie McKay. Another bash set for Friday evening was set to honour documentary, factual, lifestyle and reality categories. Two galas on Saturday will cover the bulk of awards in the film and television categories. Marquee categories for top winners in Canadian film, television and digital media will be announced Sunday and broadcast by CBC. On Friday, TSN's coverage of the 2024 Copa America earned three wins — for best sports program, opening and host, for James Duthie. CBC's coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics nabbed one win, for best sports play-by-play for Mark Lee. Watch Billianne's stripped-back cover of Shania Twain's That Don't Impress Me Much
The Milton, Ont. singer whittles the 1998 country hit down to its bare bones The 2025 Juno Awards are March 30, and CBC Music is officially in celebration mode. In the lead up to the awards, we're presenting the Juno Sessions: a series in which emerging musicians cover songs by artists who have previously won the coveted songwriter of the year award. Watch Good Kid's rollicking cover of Nelly Furtado's I'm Like a Bird In the second episode, Billianne delivers a playful and cheeky cover of Shania Twain's That Don't Impress Me Much. Accompanied simply by acoustic guitar, the Milton, Ont. singer gives a rendition of the 1998 song that is more subdued, but still has the same bite as Twain's original. Billianne started her musical career with covers, notably of Tina Turner's The Best and Doris Day's Que Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be), showcasing her powerhouse vocals. The 21-year-old felt drawn to cover Twain for the Juno Sessions because she grew up listening to her during daycare. Her and the other young girls would "just be bouncing around the kitchen to Shania Twain songs," she told CBC Music. The song's lyricism particularly resonated with Billianne: "I like how she [was] just unapologetically [saying] 'You do not impress me whatsoever.' And I think, back when she wrote that, we didn't have the Sabrina Carpenters of now talking about men in that way. It's just cool that she did that. She was not even afraid to name drop Brad Pitt in a song and be like, 'You don't impress me.'" Twain won the Juno for songwriter of the year in 2000 for her songs Man! I Feel Like a Woman, That Don't Impress Me Much and You've Got a Way, from her 1999 album Come on Over. It's the second best-selling country album of all time and went on to influence the likes of Taylor Swift and Maren Morris. The 13-time Juno winner was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2011. Watch Good Kid's rollicking cover of Nelly Furtado's 'I'm Like a Bird'
The 2025 Juno Awards are March 30, and CBC Music is officially in celebration mode. In the lead up to the awards, we're presenting the Juno Sessions: a series in which emerging musicians cover songs by artists who have previously won the coveted songwriter of the year award. To start things off, Toronto's Good Kid brought their indie rock edge to Nelly Furtado's 2000 breakout hit, "I'm Like a Bird." The band received their first Juno nom in 2024 for breakthrough group of the year. Good Kid were drawn to the "timeless nature" of the song, telling CBC Music in an interview that "it didn't feel like it had aged at all." They created a hybrid of the song's arrangement, uncovering interesting chord progressions and adding a heavy guitar sound that doesn't exist in the original. "We realized, even though it sounds really good and simple and easy to sing along to, it's actually a very complex song with lots of stuff in it. And one of the joys of covering things like this is, it allows you to look at all those details and really appreciate them." Furtado won the award for songwriter of the year at the 2001 Junos, for her writing on "I'm Like a Bird," "Turn off the Lights," and "...On the Radio (Remember the Days)." She took home awards for best producer, best new solo artist and best single, as well that night. The 10-time Juno winner hosted the awards in 2024, performing a medley of her songs including her No. 1 hits "Promiscuous," "Give It to Me" and "Say It Right." for the rest of the 2025 Juno Session releases.
