Weekend travel: Portions of I-10, I-17 to close or narrow for roadwork
Two major freeway closures are scheduled to occur this weekend.
Both interstates 10 and 17 have miles-long closures expected to take place that will affect traffic, and both involve pavement work.
The Arizona Department of Transportation urged motorists to allow for extra travel time and to drive on the primary detours. Drivers should also double check the timing of the closures, as some only last two days.
For real-time highway conditions, drivers should check the az511 app or call 511.
Here are the freeway closures for this weekend (Feb. 21-24).
The closure between Sky Harbor and McDowell Road will occur from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for deck joint work as part of the pavement improvements.
The southbound State Route 51 ramp to westbound I-10 will be closed. The westbound Loop 202 ramp to westbound I-10 will be open, but traffic must exit I-10 at Seventh Avenue.
The Sky Harbor west exit to westbound I-10 will be open for access only to northbound State Route 51 or eastbound Loop 202 toward Tempe.
Detour: Westbound I-10 traffic approaching the closure can detour to northbound I-17 and reconnect with I-10 at the stack interchange.
Drivers near westbound I-10 north of downtown Phoenix can consider using westbound McDowell Road or Van Buren Street to travel beyond the closure.
The north Phoenix highway will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday for a pavement project.

These northbound I-17 on-ramps will be closed:
Deer Valley Road
Pinnacle Peak Road
Happy Valley Road
Jomax Road
Detour: Northbound I-17 traffic can travel west on Happy Valley Road to northbound Lake Pleasant Parkway and use eastbound Loop 303 to return to I-17.
Some street closures will be in place, only allowing local traffic. ADOT urged drivers to use the primary detour and avoid neighborhood streets, as they are not designed to handle freeway traffic.
The closure begins 7 p.m. Saturday and will last until 4 a.m. Monday. The closure will allow for pavement maintenance as part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.
Southbound State Route 143 at University Drive will be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday for guardrail repair.

The on-ramp at 59th Avenue and off-ramp at 51st Avenue will be closed from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday for a widening project.
ADOT said motorists should plan to use other nearby ramps.
The closure will take effect around 1 a.m. Monday morning and is expected to last until late April for reconstruction as part of a widening project.
The off-ramp closure is the latest in a string of two-month closures of on- and off-ramps on Loops 101 and 202.
Detour: Consider exiting northbound Loop 101 at Cactus Road and using northbound Hayden Road or 94th Street to reach Raintree Drive.
